This. Totally this. Illicit recording of live broadcast radio performances of black jazz and blues artists in the 20's and 30's was how the major labels got their coffers large enough to start to change laws to protect them from others doing what they did to those original musicians.

The copyright enforcement laws came into place once they'd established themselves by breaking copyrights.
