Moderator Guidelines

  • Don’t be mean to users. Be gentle or neutral.
  • Most moderator actions which have a modlog message should include your username.
  • When in doubt about whether or not a user is problematic, send them a DM.
  • Don’t waste time debating/arguing with problematic users.
  • Assume the best, but don’t tolerate sealioning/just asking questions/concern trolling.
  • Ask another mod to take over cases you struggle with, if you get tired, or when things get personal.
  • Ask the other mods for advice when things get complicated.
  • Share everything you do in the mod matrix, both so several mods aren't unknowingly handling the same issues, but also so you can receive feedback on what you intend to do.
  • Don't rush mod actions. If a case doesn't need to be handled right away, consider taking a short break before getting to it. This is to say, cool down and make room for feedback.
  • Don’t perform too much moderation in the comments, except if you want a verdict to be public or to ask people to dial a convo down/stop. Single comment warnings are okay.
  • Send users concise DMs about verdicts about them, such as bans etc, except in cases where it is clear we don’t want them at all, such as obvious transphobes. No need to notify someone they haven’t been banned of course.
  • Explain to a user why their behavior is problematic and how it is distressing others rather than engage with whatever they are saying. Ask them to avoid this in the future and send them packing if they do not comply.
  • First warn users, then temp ban them, then finally perma ban them when they break the rules or act inappropriately. Skip steps if necessary.
  • Use neutral statements like “this statement can be considered transphobic” rather than “you are being transphobic”.
  • No large decisions or actions without community input (polls or meta posts f.ex.).
  • Large internal decisions (such as ousting a mod) might require a vote, needing more than 50% of the votes to pass. Also consider asking the community for feedback.
  • Remember you are a voluntary moderator. You don’t get paid. Take a break when you need one. Perhaps ask another moderator to step in if necessary.

You misunderstood.

Fide doesn't consider transwomen women. So transwomen have to play in the open tournaments (not men's), and not in women's.

The fun part, is that if you're a transman, Fide doesn't consider you a woman either. So you also must compete only in open tournaments (not men's) and you can't keep your women's titles like WGM and WIM.

There are no male only tournaments.

If a transman detransitions, then they count as a woman again, and can have their women's titles.

You'd think they'd be consistent, but no.

trans woman is 2 words btw (in the same way you(hopefully) wouldn’t say blackman or gaywoman)

[–] tutter@lemmy.blahaj.zone 5 points 3 hours ago* (last edited 3 hours ago) (3 children)

Lol blackman and gaywoman sounds like really bad superhero names a conservative would come up with to make fun of hollywood

[–] nonfuinoncuro@lemmy.zip 2 points 1 hour ago

I would totally watch a sunny spinoff called "gayman: fighter of the nightman" and now that song is stuck in my head

spoiler alert: he does get the boy's hole, but at a steep cost

By the way, please avoid the use of “transwoman” and “transman”. Saying “transman” implies that someone isn’t a real man, but instead something different. However, “trans” is an adjective, a descriptor, so saying that someone is a “trans man” is good, because they’re a man who happens to be trans.

[–] Septimaeus@infosec.pub 10 points 13 hours ago* (last edited 13 hours ago) (1 children)

While true — e.g., “trans man” is preferred because “transman” sounds like a strange new gender or cape-wearing crusader — I probably would only offer the tip the second time I heard the awkward phrasing, for the same reason I’d help a friend learning a new language with a word they were slightly mispronouncing. Just to help.

Since we’re offering tips, here are a few that are related…

  1. For individuals, the use of the “trans” descriptor usually isn’t obligatory. By default I just use man, woman, neither, either… however they identify. No special rules. In some contexts I’ll try to remember “trans.” If it’s important to a particular trans person to include that part, for example, or if they’re still mostly cis-presenting and I might need the mental post-it note. Otherwise it’s usually simpler and more affirming to just roll with their identity as given/presented.
  2. For groups, you’ve probably heard people say “trans men and women,” which leaves out our nonbinary friends. Instead I try to use “trans people” when possible, even for myself, just to be inclusive of all spectra of transition, acknowledge shared experiences, and express solidarity. The obvious exception is where binary gender identity is immediately applicable, such as FIDE’s exclusion of trans women.
  3. Re: when to add “trans,” there is a related faux pas that’s very common. It’s generally weird and sometimes rude to ask if (or guess whether) someone is trans if they haven’t volunteered the information themselves. Similarly, if someone hasn’t offered any gender or pronouns, for themselves or someone else, it’s generally most polite to assume none.
  4. To do that, usually you need only use gender neutral pronouns. In contemporary professional English writing these are “they” and “them.” Yes, these were once 3PP but now thet are far more useful as the pronouns of choice wherever gender is unknown or irrelevant. And they are essentially never incorrect. If someone has asked you to use more specific pronouns, you ought to as a kindness (to affirm their gender identity) but if you forget and accidentally use the neutral pronouns, you only missed an opportunity to be affirming.
  5. If relevant or important, you may need to inquire about their gender. This is where people put their foot in their mouth most often. In 2026 the best way to phrase the question is to ask about their pronouns (NOT to ask “man or woman?” which instantly makes you sound old AF).
  6. That said… (final tip) asking people’s pronouns without justification can come across as pushy/prying since not everyone wishes to (or is ready to) identify. Perhaps worse, it can come across as disingenuous (performative/patronizing) to those who care and a boorish cliche to everyone else. So if it’s relevant, include why you’re asking. For example, “when I describe your work to the team, what pronouns would you prefer I use for your introduction?”

According to tip #1, I am a trans neither

[–] isVeryLoud@lemmy.ca 11 points 17 hours ago

I prefer the terms "transmasc" and "transfem" for that reason.

[–] carotte@lemmy.blahaj.zone 11 points 14 hours ago (1 children)

"trans women" and "trans men", with the space. trans is an adjective, like tall or smart. you wouldn’t say tallmen or smartwomen in one word either.

[–] cantstopthesignal@sh.itjust.works 1 points 1 hour ago (1 children)

But you would say straight man or gay woman. Are we left without any way to refer to the gender of trans people? How someone presents is descriptively important in a lot of contexts, particularly social. If you don't offer up an alternative people aren't going to adopt your point of view.

[–] carotte@lemmy.blahaj.zone 1 points 1 hour ago

yea, that’s fine to say we’re trans (when it’s relevant), all i’m asking for here is for you to put a space in between the words "trans" and "women" (or men). treat it as two words, not one. if that’s already what you were doing, then that’s good 👍

[–] Skullgrid@lemmy.world 2 points 17 hours ago (1 children)

You're in luck, I originally used "trans women women" and changed it because it looked awkward.

[–] isVeryLoud@lemmy.ca 9 points 17 hours ago (2 children)

Trans women women women women men women women

Why does CHESS have segregated leagues? I'd understand chess boxing of course, but regular chess?

[–] Jobe@feddit.org 2 points 4 hours ago

Sexism was the reason initially, and right now there are still a lot fewer women in chess. Because there are so few women in chess, fewer make it to the top ranks in open tournaments, so they made tournaments for women only, which might actually help get women into the game. Women having their own titles (WGM for woman grand master etc) comes with its own problems though, because people (dickheads) will see those as lesser than the open titles (which women can also earn).
It really sucks either way. Either women are othered and their titles seen as lesser, or they disappear in the rankings in open tournaments (again, not because they are worse at chess, but because there are fewer of them).

Because sexism

Obviously not every gender is as intelligent as the superior one

[–] Zagorath@quokk.au 13 points 16 hours ago (1 children)

"Because sexism" is correct, but for entirely the opposite reason of what you seem to be suggesting.

There's no men's league, only a women's and an open. The women's doesn't exist because women can't compete against the men, but because very many of them don't want to. The women's division is about providing a safer space for women to compete comfortably, to encourage more women into playing chess.

[–] Zagorath@quokk.au 5 points 11 hours ago

I should probably add, this is also exactly why it's so absurd to ban trans women from competing in this division.

I do HEMA, a combat sport where physical differences actually do matter to some extent, very much unlike chess. But here in Australia, most tournaments don't have a women's division. They have an open division and an "under-represented genders" division. They don't just "allow" trans women to compete, they openly encourage trans women, trans men, and enbies to participate. Anyone other than cis men. And the case for doing that in chess is so much stronger.

[–] ebc@lemmy.ca 4 points 16 hours ago

Shooting is also segregated, but the scores are usually higher on the women's side, funnily enough. At least that's the case in air rifle.
