MODERATORS

The three state killings came just two days after the Democrats’ sweeping victory in the November 3 midterm elections, which constituted a stunning repudiation of Trump’s policies on social inequality, war, the assault on immigrants and attacks on democratic rights. Yet a wide internet search turns up not a single comment from any Democrat on Thursday’s three executions.

Such an image shouldnt even be feasible in what we call today's "civilised" society. There is so many things wrong with it - banning it would be the least they could do.

Banning it and doing nothing else wouldn't be a mercy...

Our entire prison system is systemic torture, and not even effective at reforming prisoners or deterring others from committing crimes later.

That kind of reform has and will continue to be a part of the Dem platform, and without neoliberals running shit we can actually get some done.

The existing system just makes criminals worse and then releases them with less options then they had before.

There's no reason to make a huge issue about just this slice of the pie, when it can just be listed as a line item in a full justice system reform bill that has an even better chance of passing.

We don't have to waste time fixing things one at a time, that entire method was just bullshit neoliberals did to slow progress.

Progress can be a fucking bulldozer. It needs to be.

I fully agree, but unfortunately the 'official' number of executions have even increased in 2025, according to Amnesty International:

The number of executing countries at 17 is two higher than the record-low of 15 set in 2024. Four countries (Japan, South Sudan, Taiwan, United Arab Emirates) resumed executions after a hiatus, while two countries (Oman, Syria) which carried out executions in 2024 did not in 2025. Of note, the United States was the only nation to execute people in the Americas for the 17th consecutive year.

[However], as in previous years, the 2025 execution total does not include the thousands of executions estimated to be carried out annually in China, regarded as the world’s leading executioner. Both China and Vietnam classify data on the death penalty as a state secret. Restrictive state practices in North Korea, Laos, and Belarus also result in little to no information being available for those countries.
