The three state killings came just two days after the Democrats’ sweeping victory in the November 3 midterm elections, which constituted a stunning repudiation of Trump’s policies on social inequality, war, the assault on immigrants and attacks on democratic rights. Yet a wide internet search turns up not a single comment from any Democrat on Thursday’s three executions.

On the same day as the three executions, California Governor Gavin Newsom, widely seen as a contender for the Democratic presidential nomination in 2028, moved to commute the death sentences of all 548 people on the state’s death row to life without parole.

It's hard to reconcile this sentence with the thesis of the article. I guess the title "Democrats are doing something about capital punishment where they have power and not where they don't" isn't as compelling. Gov. Newsom is no progressive, he's a generic liberal and conventional Democrat. I would say that commuting those sentences was a clear statement of where Democrats are on the issue.

Besides, the pigs execute three Americans every day. I would argue that the people getting executed without due process should be the priority. https://mappingpoliceviolence.org/

We have to acknowledge the elephant in the room, that just like the Green Party (Jill Stein, Sinema), the Socialist movement is ~~often~~ sometimes (and mostly online) used by far-right extremist factions to drive a wedge within the Democratic coalition and dissuade people from voting in their own interest.

Like, I totally get wanting to move Democrats left. Even I said that Democratic Primaries begin the day after the midterms and the purity tests should come on issues of wealth tax, medicare for all, holding the Trump regime accountable, distancing from Israel, etc.. But this issue? This is manufacturing division when there isn't fucking any.

Never forget the lessons from the Cambridge Analytica scandal.

"In one document, SCL said that encouraging people "not to vote" might be more effective than trying to motivate swing voters.

Describing its work in a Nigerian election, SCL Global said it had advised that "rather than trying to motivate swing voters to vote for our clients, a more effective strategy might be to persuade opposition voters not to vote at all"." (https://www.bbc.com/news/technology-43581892)

"According to a brochure from SCL obtained by the BBC, SCL claims that it helped a candidate’s campaign by painting graffiti around the island made to look like it “ostensibly came from the youth,” which allowed SCL’s client to adopt policies and “claim credit for listening to a ‘united youth.’ ”" (https://slate.com/technology/2018/03/cambridge-analyticas-work-in-the-caribbean-was-pretty-shady.html)

Now, can you think of a loose knit group of people, on lemmy and other websites, who talk and act like "the youths", and try to convince people that actual activism is staying home? That true leftism is bending the knee?

Thank you for reminding me of this; saving for future reference. Will be more relevant the closer 2028 comes.

I remember seeing that Israel quintupled its online troll farm budget back in July and within a month, operations had clearly spun-up online. That's not to mention disinfo groups from China, India, and Russia...
