  • Add fun thing for impossibly abstract reason

The engineer in me concludes that Christmas trees ought to be cat-proofed so they can be included in the fun.

We put 20 pounds of weights on the stands so ours can climb

Is 20 enough? How tiny are your cats? I feel like 45 (a big weight lifting plate) might not be enough. Might need to screw the stand on a 36"*36" piece of plywood and put 20 on every corner. I guess it depends on the size and weight of your tree, though. 25 years ago we had a cat climb nearly to the top of a 10-12' tree (seemed like 12, but maybe just seems like that now). Anyway, the cat didn't just stay on the trunk and we had to make adjustments to prevent a tip. Think we switched stands to something more heavy duty.

We've got a 10 pound hand weight affixed on opposite legs about a foot and a half (half a meter ish) from the center. One cat is 10, the other 15, and nothing will stop it swaying but they haven't so much as threatened to knock it over in years.

Our trees are artificial. We used to run a Christmas tree festival benefit supporting the local homeless shelter and every few years a tree would not sell, so we bought it. We only have five right now I think.
