They're not getting rid of it. It will still be PBS and it will still be funded by the most privileged. And it will still be supported by the majority of the state. This is just fuel for the fundraising. Etc. It's just more theater to rile up the base and make people in this thread feel self-righteous.
this post is literally about how it's going to cease being broadcast in Arkansas. context matters. the corporation for public broadcasting (cpb) that manages federal funding for npr and pbs is being entirely disbanded because the locally owned and operated stations do not have enough avenues of control for the republicans and their oligarchs.
you're arguing that pbs is part of a civil religion, which, you know what, fair, we need a lot more political engagement from the people through media other than tv and the radio. we need more local engagement and activity. however: the death knell of pbs does not signal people focusing more on their local communities. it represents the end of one of the few mass media bulwarks we had against things that are much worse.
they are in this case getting rid of pbs, and what will be replacing it will be as you described: funded by the most privileged. i'm not exactly sure yet if it will be paramount, fox, some new neovolkisch MAGA broadcast network, or simply more sinclair broadcasting.
if i were you, i would not be celebrating the end of locally owned and operated broadcast media but instead encouraging others to start finding other places to find news and information in and about their communities, and if they can't find them, to start founding them. they will want to leverage existing resources if they do: local public libraries, little free libraries, church groups, knitting circles, and granges are all great places to start. anyone who has a desktop printer can start creating weekly newsletters discussing the things that are being lost with the defunding of npr and pbs.
and if you value the local documentaries produced by and for pbs, consider finding a locally owned movie theater, if one is available (they're exceedingly rare these days) try talking to the manager or owner about what they would need to screen something you produce. pbs and npr are dying, despite what you've said here, but you are right on the money that things are going to get worse. but that doesn't mean we have to be passive
