I'm old and gen-x. I hail from the time of no gay marriage and unintegrated schools. My generation was born while interracial marriage was still not federally legal.
The same people who are maga now have been spreading the same kind of hatred for decades. The first time it impacted me personally was when I had the audacity to play D&D as a teen while living in the bible belt. There's a personality type (or three) that is a throughline across the entire span of my life, no matter where I've lived, no matter which decade we're talking about, that is exactly the sort of person who is now a maga. I would bet that I could reliably tell you which people I haven't spoken to in twenty years are maga now to a high degree of accuracy.
I've had a lifetime of dealing with these exact same people, either talking with them, arguing with them, or being targeted by them. The social changes conservatives were pushing for (or resisting) in 1988 are entirely compatible with what Trump is doing now, and I don't for one moment believe that any larger fraction of them would have resisted him back then than have now. We have landed exactly where they were always driving us, they were just being more polite and cagey about it most of the time.
I'm years into dismissing them, and that ain't changing. They can wallow in their own ignorance and hate. They already put modern hitler in power, and he ain't ever leaving except in cuffs or a box, so what is the high water mark I'm trying to prevent now? Let them ride the wreckage they have created into the ground with the rest of us. I'm not going to hold their hand on the way down.
Edit:
Side-note: Look, I'm not even going to draw any conclusions from this, you can do it yourself.
I'm not saying it's not bad out there, but I have a lot of skin in the game and refuse to be a victim, I have changed people's attitudes and will continue to do so. I fully understand when someone says they're burnt out though.
I totally respect you for that. 🙂
But, FWIW, I don't look at my refusal to engage with them as being a victim (though I admit in reality I'll be among the last group in Trump's camps unless he locks people up for rhetoric - and also that may not have been what you meant), I look at it as standing on my right to not allow toxicity in my life.
When I was a wimpy kid I didn't have a choice. Now I'm an I-don't-give-a-fuck middle aged man, and I very much enjoy controlling who gets my attention and time. I find it supremely liberating. :)
