Politics at its root is ideals about how to structure society though. It does, however, devolve into a team sports mentality in a lot of cases, which is I think what you're getting at.
Yea, several of those things have actual qualitative and quantitative measurements on which they can be compared, but far be it from the common dingdong to think in such lofty terms...
