Of course he was targeted. The shooter is likely dead by now. They probably called it Operation Watch Charlie or something.
He was killed as a distraction.

Possible... but he had a lot of enemies, and there's more and more people with literally nothing left to lose in the USA every single day, so it was probably inevitable on a long enough timescale.
Who would have thought that making millions of people's lives actively worse in an already not great time in the most widely-armed country in the world could have POSSIBLY led to current events???

Things can still happen simultaneously. If a "distraction" is ruining lives then you shouldn't be ignoring it. If Trump enacts martial law to seize the country don't ignore it for the sake of it being a "distraction".
The World War 3 has already has started, just many are refusing to acknowledge it. If Ukraine won't stop Russia it will continue to the rest of the Europe. We already North Korea fighting within Europe.
Going back to trump, he is all about himself and no empathy towards others. He is willing to get Ukrainians and Palestinians killed in exchange for whatever putin and bibi are giving him. He had no problem of having two politicians assassinated to just distract from No King protests.
So yeah, I wouldn't put past him to use him for political gain, like excuse to deploy military in Utah or some other goal he wants to achieve.

We are no longer in the first term where there were people that would say "no" to him.
Wars start all the time and don't escalate into worldwide conflicts. This is like saying "The next recession has started, just look at X!!!" Outside Moab and SLC (which are moderate), Utah is one of the reddest states in the union. From a despotic point of view, this makes no sense.
Trump's administration might be more competent now, but Trump himself certainly isn't. If he found himself suddenly not liking Kirk, I would expect to see him trash talking on TruthSocial.
A far more likely scenario: all the recent political violence we've been seeing is the result of unstable individuals in a politically divisive climate with unfettered access to firearms.
