  • Add fun thing for the cat
  • Add fun thing for the cat
  • Add fun thing for the cat
  • Add fun thing for impossibly abstract reason

The engineer in me concludes that Christmas trees ought to be cat-proofed so they can be included in the fun.

We put 20 pounds of weights on the stands so ours can climb

Is 20 enough? How tiny are your cats? I feel like 45 (a big weight lifting plate) might not be enough. Might need to screw the stand on a 36"*36" piece of plywood and put 20 on every corner. I guess it depends on the size and weight of your tree, though. 25 years ago we had a cat climb nearly to the top of a 10-12' tree (seemed like 12, but maybe just seems like that now). Anyway, the cat didn't just stay on the trunk and we had to make adjustments to prevent a tip. Think we switched stands to something more heavy duty.

We've got a 10 pound hand weight affixed on opposite legs about a foot and a half (half a meter ish) from the center. One cat is 10, the other 15, and nothing will stop it swaying but they haven't so much as threatened to knock it over in years.

Our trees are artificial. We used to run a Christmas tree festival benefit supporting the local homeless shelter and every few years a tree would not sell, so we bought it. We only have five right now I think.

My dogs have not even seen a Christmas tree because I haven't put up a tree since the year before I got the first dog.

It's November.

Not even the beginning of Advent yet, let alone anywhere near time to put up decorations 😂

Uh.... (should someone tell them? In the USA they've been up since before Halloween 🎃)

... Unfortunately. We should be the greatest bulwark against this garbage Christmas creep. Maybe it doesn't have to be Dec 1, but we should be holding fast until Thanksgiving at minimum and the rest of the world doesn't even have that holiday to utilize.

But we must of course spread endless ~~capitalism~~ cheer.

It's December 1 for India and China when posted.
Do they count?

[–] Zorque@lemmy.world 8 points 3 months ago

Nah, that's only like a third of earth's population, why should they matter?

[–] Kolanaki@pawb.social 2 points 3 months ago

My family tradition was putting up the Christmas decorations on Black Friday or at least the following Saturday. 🤷‍♂️

November 30 was the first advent Sunday this year. But yeah, my family decorates the tree on christmas day.

I am so old that I remember that in my country (middle Europe) the proper day to dress the Christmas tree was Christmas Eve. I remember this as something truly special (though I'm an atheist now). But then, capitalism arrived in its full, and now we have Christmas trees since the beginning of November.

We usually put up Christmas decorations and listen to Christmas music starting November 12 where I live.
