Fuck AI

"We did it, Patrick! We made a technological breakthrough!"

A place for all those who loathe AI to discuss things, post articles, and ridicule the AI hype. Proud supporter of working people. And proud booer of SXSW 2024.

AI, in this case, refers to LLMs, GPT technology, and anything listed as "AI" meant to increase market valuations.

Micron/Crucial has been my go to for years building PCs. This move just pisses me off so much. Fuck AI. It just keeps taking without giving anything in return. If the bubble can hurry up and pop already, that’d be great!

Fuck AI, truly. This timeline is getting really bad.

Btw: Shouldn't some other company enter the consumer market when consumers (and consumer serving distributors etc.) are in need of electronics? The invisible hand of the market and so.

They will just tell us that “no one wants RAM anymore, tech is moving in a different direction, you want to subscribe to our AI datacenter which is so smart and capable and, just, here have this little tablet dumb terminal, see how much less space and power it takes up? you don’t need any computing power in your own hands we’ll take care of that and comfort and cradle you little baby you don’t have to think about that anymore and you can use your big brain on important things like TV shows and sports like a good docile population yes

Please bro, just subscribe. I promise just one more data canter it’s gonna be different this time bro I swear we won’t manipulate all that you see and hear to keep you in line with our vision for making all your labor output flow up to us bro please just a little world domination bro, the violence can end when we win bro it was always the west’s purpose and we’re so close bro im the savior”

Shouldn't some other company enter the consumer market when consumers...are in need of electronics?

I mean sure but DRAM factories ain't cheap.

[–] trolololol@lemmy.world 4 points 2 months ago

Well, that's what the economy books say.

History books strongly disagree. Which side are you on?

When the bubble pops or deflates, it'd be lowkey funny to see them go : "Heyyyy ! Remember me ? Good old Crucial ? I'm back on the consumer market !"

[–] mushroommunk@lemmy.today 14 points 2 months ago

And I'll go "nope, you lost your chance"

Brilliant PR move

Micron has made the difficult decision to exit the Crucial consumer

[–] drunkosaurus@lemmy.dbzer0.com 16 points 2 months ago

Ah for fuck's sake.

[–] artyom@piefed.social 13 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Well. They'll either be back soon, after the inevitable collapse of the AI industry, or they'll go out of business.

I really wish it's going to be the last one. I don't care how good they once were, they fuck the consumers once, they deserve to go bankrupt.

[–] swearengen@sopuli.xyz 10 points 2 months ago

First EVGA and now Crucial? What's next, is Seasonic gonna throw in the towel?

[–] errer@lemmy.world 8 points 2 months ago (1 children)

RAM prices have only gone up a lot over the past 6 months or so. I don’t buy their excuse, something else is going on that makes them want to exit the consumer market.

[–] shalafi@lemmy.world 1 points 2 months ago

People aren't buying, building and upgrading PCs like they used to. Crucial's using the AI excuse so as not to panic investors. And lemmy, as usual, bought it hook, line and sinker.

[–] rafoix@lemmy.zip 5 points 2 months ago

I just made a PC with 2 of their drives.

900,000 wafers of DRAM per month

does it keep expanding or
