Still investigating cause of death, but it appears to be some sort of puncture wound in the neck region

Now Trump is going to send the army to guard the streets of buttfuck nowhere Utah from all this violence, right? Right?

[–] slate@sh.itjust.works 3 points 14 minutes ago

Oh don't worry, they'll institute police checkpoints everywhere across the country for "safety" and "national security". Worked great for Ireland!

[–] BetaBlake@lemmy.world 1 points 41 minutes ago

Everyone knows the shooter was from Chicago, so this still counts as Chicago crime

Can we stark calling the shooter Mario? I wish he had a better escape plan like a janitor outfit and beard

[–] BetaBlake@lemmy.world 10 points 1 hour ago (3 children)

I don't think he was shot, I think his neck just did that

A truck backfired at the same time.

"Grunthos was reported to have been "disappointed" by the poem's reception, and was about to embark on a reading of his 12-book epic entitled "My Favourite Bathtime Gurgles" when his own major intestine, in a desperate attempt to save humanity, leapt straight up through his neck and throttled his brain. The bullshit could no longer be contained.

[–] Mulligrubs@lemmy.world 2 points 12 minutes ago

Do you mean to say it wasn't a random bullet?

I never would have reached that conclusion on my own, thank you FBI, you are truly the world's greatest detectives. Thinking outside the box!

Tinfoil hat time: Based on the close up of the shooting, it looks like he got shot right in the corrotid artery, which has a very high mortality rating. This wasn't a lucky shot, this was well aimed. If you look at the tape, it doesn't look like someone in the crowd had a gun, no one in the crowd was reacting before the shot occurred, and no one saw a gun pulled. In the crowd full of people, how to you avoid everyone else and make a kill shot like that? I legit believe this was a shot taken from far away and the person that took the shot had the ability to make a sniper shot like that, (some form of police/military training.) Then, before he's been officially pronounced dead, Trump posts "The Great, and even Legendary, Charlie Kirk, is dead. No one understood or had the Heart of the Youth in the United States of America better than Charlie. He was loved and admired by ALL, especially me, and now, he is no longer with us. Melania and my Sympathies go out to his beautiful wife Erika, and family. Charlie, we love you!" Trump wrote on his social media platform. If he hadn't officially been declared dead, why was Trump saying that Charlie Kirk was dead before it was official. Next Trump is blaming the left with no proof. I'm calling it, Trump had Kirk assassinated as a false flag operation, and this will be trump's reischtag fire. Buckle up. Edit: NYT is saying the shot came from a roof via a high power bolt action rifle, because the gun was found in the woods near the campus. Authorities also claim to have video footage of the suspect going to the roof of a campus building.

[–] shalafi@lemmy.world 5 points 35 minutes ago

There is video of a person dressed in black skedaddling back over the rooftop, clearly the shooter. No sane shooter is aiming for the neck, hell no. Pretty sure it was a chest shot that tumbled around his ribcage and exited his neck. Weird shit happens when a teeny projectile hits meat and bone at 3,400FPS.

[–] python@lemmy.world 2 points 8 minutes ago

Based on the close up of the shooting, it looks like he got shot right in the corrotid artery,

There are two carotid arteries. Based on the footage, it looks to me like only his left carotid artery got hit. It would make sense because bullets make a way bigger hole when exiting than they do when entering.
I don't think anyone, no matter how skilled they are, would be aiming to do that. It's way more likely to be a failed headshot or shot to the torso.

[–] tyler@programming.dev 28 points 2 hours ago (1 children)

You don’t think that maybe trump just doesn’t wait for a news article to be posted? Maybe he got a call and since he’s incessantly posting tweets he did it before an editor could approve the news article change? There’s a lot more simple explanations.

[–] Washedupcynic@lemmy.ca 14 points 1 hour ago

Yes, this is also highly likely, which is why I started my post with "tin foil hat time." Even if that's the case, even if the govt had 0 involvement in his death, I still think this incident will be used as a means for trump to further solidify power.

[–] frezik@lemmy.blahaj.zone 38 points 3 hours ago* (last edited 2 hours ago) (3 children)

The shooting spot was about 250 yards away. That's WWII sniping range, but not particularly far for modern precision rifles. According to Ryan Cleckner (US Army Ranger sniper), precision marksman training in the Army makes you use iron sights out to 600 yards. A good setup these days can hit a dinner plate (read: a human head) at 1000 yards, and that's not even pushing it.

They didn't have to hit him the neck. They just needed to hit the general head area. They got lucky hitting the artery dead on, but any head hit has a very high probability of death.

There are millions of bench rest shooters with a bolt action rifle who could make that shot.

[–] The_v@lemmy.world 14 points 2 hours ago* (last edited 2 hours ago) (1 children)

If you have a regular 30.06 bullet with a rifle sighted in at 200 yards, it will hit around 5" lower than you aim at 250 yards depending on the gun and conditions.

If you have it sighted in at 300 yards and aim for center mass (heart) the bullet will hit around 5" above where they are aiming.

In both conditions the bullet hits the neck area.

[–] SGforce@lemmy.ca 1 points 22 minutes ago

Also, I don't know if people train for downward sloped shots. He may have over/under corrected.

[–] morphballganon@mtgzone.com 10 points 2 hours ago (1 children)

Shooter was probably aiming for head and the bullet lost a few inches of altitude in the air

[–] shalafi@lemmy.world 1 points 34 minutes ago

Shooter was also aiming down, which is not a thing one can typically practice.

[–] couldhavebeenyou@lemmy.zip 9 points 2 hours ago

Whoever did it, at least we know (s)he had to be part of a well regulated militia

[–] AA5B@lemmy.world 14 points 2 hours ago (2 children)

false flag operation

Claims like this give both too much credit for action and too little to strategy.

  • there’s no reason to believe this specific action was a false flag operation when in the current environment it’s simple to believe a radicalized individual
  • isn’t that one of the benefits of the continuous hatred, outrage, divisiveness, chaos? There’s always going to be stuff like this happening, so you always have an event to capitalize on without the risk of doing it yourself

No, that was random gang violence. Charly tried to sell crack on the wrong turf.

Of course he was targeted. The shooter is likely dead by now. They probably called it Operation Watch Charlie or something.

He was killed as a distraction.

[–] UnderpantsWeevil@lemmy.world 26 points 4 hours ago (1 children)

He was killed as a distraction.

Susie Wiles: "Sir, they leaked the live copy of your letter to Jeffery Epstein. It's having absolutely no effect on your public approval and Congress seems incapable of doing anything to stall your accrual of executive level powers. What should we do?"

Trump: "I'm a great president, Susie. Some say I'm the greatest president who ever lived. That's why I make the big decisions. And I've been thinking about this for a long time. We've got to save the nation. We need to get stronger. Some people are saying we're not strong, but they're wrong, Susie. This is the best this country has ever been and it's only going to get better. Are you ready to make this country better, Susie? I don't think you're ready... you're nodding. Does that mean you're ready?"

Susie Wiles: "Yes, Mr. President. Anything for you, Mr. President."

Trump: "Go talk to Pete Hegseth. He'll tell you what to do."

Pete Hegseth, drunkenly: "Susthy, ith so good to thee you again. But I lothe to wath you leaf."

Susie Wiles: "The President said you would know what to do."

Pete: "Yeah, uh... kill the big head guy. You know the one. With the tiny face."

Susie: "Charlie Kirk"

Pete: loud burping noise

Susie: "Right away, Mr. War Fighter Commander Pete."

sounds of gunfire

Susie Wiles: "Mr. President! In a strange turn of fate, it appears someone else shot Charlie Kirk before we could get to him."

Trump: "All according to plan, Susie. I'm the smartest man who ever lived. You can thank me with a kiss. Get over here, sweetie."

Susie: you can grab me by the pussy. I'll just let you do it.

[–] Kyrgizion@lemmy.world 31 points 5 hours ago (1 children)

Possible... but he had a lot of enemies, and there's more and more people with literally nothing left to lose in the USA every single day, so it was probably inevitable on a long enough timescale.

[–] SARGE@startrek.website 15 points 3 hours ago

Who would have thought that making millions of people's lives actively worse in an already not great time in the most widely-armed country in the world could have POSSIBLY led to current events???

TIL that I could be in the FBI. Great detective work guys.

[–] AcidiclyBasicGlitch@sh.itjust.works 37 points 5 hours ago* (last edited 4 hours ago) (1 children)

When you realize how low the bar is, you should never have imposter syndrome again. At this point the remaining federal government is only composed of Trump loyalists.

The claims of meritocracy replacing DEI are beyond ridiculous. How many campus shooters have ever just walked away like this? This was a high profile assassination. The fact that they still have not found the guy that did this, should let you know they either let this happen or they're now just completely incompetent. I'm leaning towards the former, but the latter is definitely a possibility.

Anybody can just be handed power and control under this administration, no matter how unqualified. That is how the right has been operating for the last 25+ years. Literally that is why people keep joining this grift. If you're willing to pledge loyalty, take advantage of people, and help destroy your own country, you can make bank.

The people that fund the right refuse to let a penny of their money go towards taxes to pay for public services, but they will literally throw absurd amounts of money at anything that promotes their agenda. They would pay somebody to publicly set their own money on fire, if it meant that person could convince a handful of people to keep voting Republican.

The really sad thing is, there is some truth to the left (or at least the Democratic party) becoming so comfortable being cemented in established norms and institutions, that they have managed to become exclusionary and made a big chunk of the U.S. feel alienated.

Like a lot of the institutions on the left have become what the Republican party was when the new right was first forming. Everybody "new" actually has connections to somebody already established in the party. They're usually somebody's kid, relative, or family friend, or they attended the same Ivy League and were recruited by somebody in the establishment.

Geniuses ... guy who called for violence against people, wanted to deny people's rights, making fun of their misery, downplaying deaths of other people, publicly mocking others in distress and making millions of dollars off it all ... and doing it all on a daily basis on national platforms with a following of millions .... FBI suddenly thinks that people might want to kill this person.

[–] shalafi@lemmy.world 2 points 31 minutes ago

I think the FBI merely made an official statement and the media was starving for anything new to print.
