The Dumbest <thing> In History is Trump's bag, baby. It's his home territory. An enduring legacy he has painstakingly built over decades. It's a tall bar to clear, but I think Trump can top the Emu War.

I can't predict anything this administration does, but it seems very possible we attack on MLK day.

[–] ThunderWhiskers@lemmy.world 14 points 1 week ago (2 children)

but it seems very possible we attack on MLK day.

I'd be curious to hear your reasoning for this.

[–] MagicShel@lemmy.zip 32 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) (2 children)

I think he'd love to rename it after himself somehow. And if they did an instant takeover, that would be Trump's "V-Day."

I wouldn't bet money on it, but if I had to, that's the day I'd pick. They are ramping up the rhetoric more than they ever did for Venezuela.

I think his birthday is coming up. That is a strong contender as well. "Happy Birthday, Mr. President. We got you Greenland."

"Wow, no one has ever gotten me one of those before. Can I do the whole Prime Nocturn thing with the Danish gals?"

That might be a better bet, even.

[–] bdonvr@thelemmy.club 14 points 1 week ago (1 children)

They are ramping up the rhetoric more than they ever did for Venezuela.

I mean I wouldn't say that. They quite literally murdered people regularly in the lead up to that with the boat thing.

[–] jj4211@lemmy.world 6 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

Yes, the action was more severe, but generally downplayed as "just law enforcement stuff", not every day musing how they should just take Venezuela over.

Waltzing into Venezuela seems to be like blood in the water. They have a taste for it and are ready to roll over another "easy" target (why would NATO raise a fuss over less than 70K people, I am sure they are thinking)

They don't see Venezuela as a one off, they see it as momentum..

If I'm thinking like an idiot a la trump I'd think then when we celebrate mlk we're actually celebrating takeover of Greenland day. In his mind maybe replacing a holiday he dislikes. Maybe another purity test for his idiot followers

[–] Amberskin@europe.pub 11 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Even if the US military achieve complete control of Greenland in a short time (they will not, and will learn the danes know how to fight in the snow), the first thing the next admin will do is to pull off, bring the troops home and negotiate the possible war reparations.

[–] smeenz@lemmy.nz 7 points 1 week ago (1 children)

What next administration ?

I don't think this dude realises that he is talking about the dumbest president in American history, but then again he did get into the White House TWICE, so i'm not really sure who's stupider? him or those that put him there and are STILL rooting for him...

[–] Doomsider@lemmy.world 40 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

It shows you how rigged the voting system is in favor of the Republicans for the presidential election. They have rejected the illusion of democracy at this point let alone the practice.

They have gerrymandered, used religion, the courts, infiltrated voting systems, and not to mention producing constant propaganda with a heavy reliance on othering people to ensure they win even when their numbers are less.

[–] cheesybuddha@lemmy.world 23 points 1 week ago

I think he might be the dumbest world leader in history, honestly.

Like, there have been some real morons throughout the world, but this guy really takes the idiot cake.

[–] Buffalox@lemmy.world 9 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

Republicans and the voters that voted Trump are definitely the stupider part of that situation. Being fooled by a fool makes you pretty stupid. Failing to detect the blatant lies of a pathological liar makes you stupid. Thinking the obvious flaming sociopathic narcissist is on your side makes you stupid.
The only way to be that stupid is by a lifetime of indoctrination that up is down. Americans have been indoctrinated for a century that freedom is the ultimate highest value, higher than life itself, without ever actually making a good definition of what freedom is! And Trump is a sociopathic narcissist, with no conscience no respect for anything or regard for other people and little self control, and that is seen by most of the American population as the ultimate expression of the freedom they idolize.
Americans are also indoctrinated to admire being rich, as a sign of skill and intelligence. And since Trump is rich and famous, Americans think he is intelligent, despite his fortune is based on his inheritance.

[–] Boiglenoight@lemmy.world 56 points 1 week ago (1 children)

An attack on Greenland would trigger Article 5. An attack on one is an attack on all. It would start a world war.

Trump said that electing Kamala would lead to world war 3. Every accusation is an admission.

[–] Flatworm7591@lemmy.dbzer0.com 11 points 1 week ago (3 children)

I think the EU would capitulate. They know they can't fight the US. But it would likely be the end of NATO.

[–] HK65@sopuli.xyz 21 points 1 week ago (1 children)

There are options. Dumping US bonds would collapse the US, and the only thing that makes it hard is the US economy collapsing would be a bad thing for the EU right now.

Also, protracted resistance. Greenland is harsh territory, and Nordic weekend soldiers regularly beat US marines in exercises in cold weather warfare.

The USSR lost half a million in Afghanistan, 50k to fighting, 450k to the environment. And they didn't need to resupply via the Atlantic.

Also, the Nordics probs have the world's best submarine interdiction fleet, and most of the Cold War era US anti-sub stuff is actually reliant on Greenland, Iceland and the UK cooperating.

Nordic subs regularly score hits on US carriers in exercises.

[–] cheesybuddha@lemmy.world 9 points 1 week ago (2 children)

It would be the end of NATO as it stands, there's no reason the remaining countries couldn't continue the alliance or start a new one.

[–] jj4211@lemmy.world 7 points 1 week ago

Would technically have to be a new one, NATO wasn't designed to handle this sort of scenario. Of course New NATO would be an America-free roughly equivalent, with some different governance to prevent things like a single county impeding something everyone else wants.

Considering that Trump will go down in history as politics’ dumbest fucking member, it’s not a stretch.

[–] Itdidnttrickledown@lemmy.world 9 points 1 week ago (5 children)

I mean it was ronald reagon up to this point but trump well being trumped is going to have a whole new meaning after this.

[–] Therefore@lemmy.world 12 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) (6 children)

There's an old saying in Tennessee - I know it's in Texas, probably in Tennessee - that says, fool me once, shame on - shame on you. Fool me - you can't get fooled again.

[–] moakley@lemmy.world 13 points 1 week ago

That wasn't even stupidity. He just realized partway through the sentence that he didn't want there to be an audio clip of him saying "shame on me." So he tried to change it and made it so much worse.

If anything this makes him more relatable.

Well, this is the dumbest head of state in history. The only other one I can think of that comes close is Berlusconi, but at least he didn't have the world's largest military.

[–] hector@lemmy.today 8 points 1 week ago

They want to kill nato but do not have the juice on their own. So taking greenland in adventurism they figure could overcome that, I suspect.

The president and many of his people are compromised by russia, and in league with them, (israel moreso but that is neither here nor there,) and this is what they want, to set nato against each other while he and the us secretly help far right client parties in those states get elected then fix themselves in power.

There are several people who met trump personally saying he is the dumbest person they have ever met.

[–] FatVegan@leminal.space 15 points 1 week ago (3 children)

Idk, invading the wrong country for 20 years was also pretty dumb. Maybe not for american standards, but for every developed country.

The Americans will gain absolutely nothing that they don’t already have.

Not true. They'll gain the thing that they actually want, possible mineral and oil fields, even though nobody is asking for it. Trump sees dollar signs, even though as per usual it's terrible business, but he has a military to enforce his wants so we're all fucked

Trump is a mobster wannabe if mobsters were just terribly dumb

Even the oil companies don't want Venezuela, yet he invaded it for them anyway

[–] jj4211@lemmy.world 9 points 1 week ago

Also he probably looks at a Mercator projection map and thinks New Trumpistan would be just YUGE. Trump the great they will call him in his own imagining of history.

[–] paranoia@feddit.dk 9 points 1 week ago

US companies can apply for mineral extraction in Greenland if they want, there is nothing stopping them. Greenland would be quite happy for the tax.

[–] ilinamorato@lemmy.world 8 points 1 week ago (1 children)

They already have access to mineral and oil rights in Greenland. This is literally just about the words on the map, just like Gulf of Mexico.

[–] CharlesDarwin@lemmy.world 6 points 1 week ago

And we have a military base there, too.

I think someone wrote some gaslighty DARVO piece in The Atlantic taking this "reasonable" position about how we "had" to acquire Greenland at any cost.

I still don't understand how any of their reasons are real reasons, other than Donvict wanting to feel like his tiny peen is yooooge and still works.

Never underestimate the power of large groups of dumb people doing very dumb things.

The redcaps are not a majority, but they got Donvict into office and Donvict probably has something like the Sarah Palin Floor for support - somewhere in the high 20s percent to low 30s percent, I'd wager. That's millions of very stupid people that are cheerleading dumb things.

[–] jollyrogue@lemmy.ml 9 points 1 week ago (7 children)

There are dumber ideas.

Invading Mexico or Columbia ranks higher. You know countries with people who have experience fighting guerrilla wars and have existing relationships with arms dealers.

Invading China probably takes top spot though. Don’t start land wars in Asia, especially with a peer state who has most of the world’s manufacturing capacity.

[–] boonhet@sopuli.xyz 7 points 1 week ago (2 children)

No, Greenland ranks higher than Mexico or Colombia I'm pretty sure. Because even if the US wins, there's nothing to gain strategically, only lose. Greenland being part of Denmark which is part of NATO, the US can literally just ask Denmark "hey can we build military bases on your kewl island" and Denmark likely would've been like "ok sure" before all the recent shenanigans. The stated goals are literally achievable without declaring war on allies.

I don't think Trump will invade China - or if he does, I don't think that the rest of the chain of command would listen to him anymore. THAT would indeed be the stupidest thing he could do. Everybody will lose if that happens, but especially the US.

well I mean Trump is the dumbest president in history too, so...

[–] Lushed_Lungfish@lemmy.ca 6 points 1 week ago

As a member of a country that was until rather recently at war with Denmark, if the Americans want to fight the Danes, they'll have to fight us too.
