They didn't drop the ice ads, the contract expired.

Fuck Spotify.

[–] rock_hand@lemmy.world 18 points 1 week ago (2 children)

If they don’t renew the contract even if the govt wants to, give them a little credit for that. I don’t know if that’s the case but it sounds like a reasonable reversal to taking the contract in the first place.

[–] hitmyspot@aussie.zone 17 points 1 week ago

They don't get credit for it when they were pressured to do it by their customers. They made a financial decision not a moral one.

[–] authorinthedark@lemmy.sdf.org 2 points 1 week ago

the US isn't renewing the contract, the overall campaign has ended

[–] foggy@lemmy.world 3 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Not a spotify customer but can you provide proof of this?

[–] CubitOom@infosec.pub 21 points 1 week ago

“Yes, there are currently no ICE ads running on Spotify,” the spokesperson tells Rolling Stone. “The advertisements mentioned were part of a U.S. government recruitment campaign that ran across all major media and platforms. The campaign ended on most platforms and channels, including Spotify, at the end of last year.”

Literally, the US government decided to stop running the ad campaign.

I mean the ceo is still doing ai military nonsense isnt he? This doesn't really change my view on spotify

[–] REDACTED@infosec.pub 1 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) (4 children)

Why is this an argument if you're not Russian? Why are people losing their shit over Europe making AI drones (and sending many to Ukraine) and then some European companies joining the fundraising for it? What the fuck is your problem with this, Americans?

Stop listening to propaganda and understand that this IS a good thing. They're not sponsoring Israel or any other shitty nation, Europe needs to start producing their own weapons and it's a good thing Europeans are finally doing it. What's shitty is that suddenly Americans feel like boycotting Swedish company because we want to be able to defend ourselves. Go drink more Trump's/Putin's kool-aid

[–] paultimate14@lemmy.world 3 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Fuck AI, and especially fuck the militarization of AI. That's why.

[–] REDACTED@infosec.pub -4 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) (1 children)

It's not LLM my dude, chill. AI systems have been in use for military (especially US) for a long time

EDIT: I say this in full seriousness: Sometimes I feel like Lemmy is catastrophically bad in important decision-making. Worse than reddit in fact. This place sometimes remind me if those hippie communities where logic is thrown out of window and everyone preaches happiness and rainbows.

Reality is that some of us live in constant threat of getting attacked/invaded and I could not care less about your opinion towards AI. Not many get the privilege of choosing and protesting. I sometimes wonder if you people deeply want countries like Russia, Israel and China winning because your arguments perfectly play in their hands. "just don't even think about defending yourselves or I will boycott you with my wallet" go fuck yourselves

[–] paultimate14@lemmy.world 1 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Ah yes,the US military. Famous for being a beacon of morality a shining light for all of us to follow. What could go wrong?

[–] REDACTED@infosec.pub 0 points 1 week ago

You're missing my point. Not using AI in modern times would be like fighting western weapons with Soviet era weapons. Do you honestly believe EU will use them for malicious purposes?

[–] FudgyMcTubbs@lemmy.world 2 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) (1 children)

Maybe OP is overall opposed to military and war. I don't know, but that would be an argument.

I am opposed to both, but so long as I have a 401k, my money is being contributed to/invested in things I find deplorable, so it's a little weird to me to pick and choose. Overt shit on unnecessary services like spotify would be an easy place to make a stand, but it's likely overall unhelpful. Evil gonna evil.

[–] REDACTED@infosec.pub 0 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

Maybe OP is overall opposed to military and war.

Think about what this implies. Your actions only sabotage (slightly, but still) Europe's defences, not Russia's offensive capability. You think we want war? Good luck preventing it without simply deterring the enemy in the first place like how much of the west works. I can assure you Europe is not going to invade Africa (again), or Russia even

[–] mrbutterscotch@feddit.org 1 points 1 week ago

THANK YOU! That's what I was saying aswell. I've gotten rid of all my Apple Products and had to find an alternative for apple music. Spotify was the obvious contender since it's european. The fact they invested in european defence makes me even more happy about my choice. Now this business with ICE is something else, that I don't like.

[–] pigup@lemmy.world 0 points 1 week ago

I think you make a sensible point. It was also valid to dislike the greedy billionaire that heads Spotify. But, fuck putintrump for sure.

[–] BoycottTwitter@lemmy.zip 17 points 1 week ago

Spotify is still giving tons of money to Joe Rogan. Until they fix that they deserve to be boycotted. Also the headline is misleading because the contract simply expired.

[–] Loce@lemmy.world 15 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Nah, fuck them. Damage has been done.

[–] foggy@lemmy.world 8 points 1 week ago

Agreed. Will never give them a dime.

[–] AllNewTypeFace@leminal.space 10 points 1 week ago (1 children)

I wonder how long until they quietly resume running them

[–] Lodespawn@aussie.zone 10 points 1 week ago

Given its an audio streaming platform their ads probably aren't going to quiet ..

[–] Bakkoda@lemmy.world 5 points 1 week ago

They will raise prices to cover the loss of revenue. It's always a win win for companies because they are free of regulation at this point.
