The reason Republicans block DC statehood is because the District votes Democratic, and they don’t want to give the Democrats more seats in Congress. How do they think Greenlanders would vote if conquered by Donald Trump?

[–] empireOfLove2@lemmy.dbzer0.com 54 points 6 days ago (1 children)

Same for Puerto Rico. Too brown and likely to be too liberal.

[–] edible_funk@sh.itjust.works 7 points 6 days ago (2 children)

Isn't Puerto Rico pretty conservative?

[–] Horsey@lemmy.world 3 points 6 days ago* (last edited 6 days ago)

It hard swings left and right, to a more extreme degree than any state in the 21st century.

Yes* sort of, their population is overwhelmingly Catholic Christian because of prior Spanish colonization, so they will sometimes lean conservative. But, their local politics tend to swing left a lot.

[–] reluctant_squidd@lemmy.ca 41 points 6 days ago (1 children)

Bold of you to assume voting will be an option at all.

[–] chonglibloodsport@lemmy.world 11 points 6 days ago (2 children)

That’s implied by statehood. If they didn’t want Greenlanders voting they’d annex Greenland and make it an unincorporated territory like American Samoa.

The whole thing is just bizarre!

[–] YiddishMcSquidish@lemmy.today 7 points 6 days ago (1 children)

You're assuming these people think.

[–] chonglibloodsport@lemmy.world 4 points 6 days ago

Oh no, definitely not. The lack of thinking only enhances the bizarreness of the situation. When you have ideologies that lead to this kind of tail-chasing, self-defeating nonsense, you know you’ve got something special!

Which is why they are fighting to remove voting. You think they will get statehood and the right to vote? Their votes will be invalidated for being "biased"

[–] ZoteTheMighty@lemmy.zip 9 points 6 days ago

Republicans don't have plans beyond Trump's latest thought.

[–] just_another_person@lemmy.world 51 points 6 days ago* (last edited 6 days ago) (2 children)

This gigantic piece of shit is the guy who was pals with political pedos, randomly explodes in crazy tirades, and has been held in contempt of court multiple times, including just yesterday for violent behavior. Also ordered to take an anger management course.

Total piece of shit.

[–] Soulphite@reddthat.com 13 points 6 days ago

Tracks nicely. Any loyalist to King Pedo rapist piece of shit is a piece of shit. Birds of a feather. They're all so despicable!

[–] krashmo@lemmy.world 3 points 6 days ago

Sounds like a pretty solid representation of Florida to me. What's the problem?

[–] themeatbridge@lemmy.world 36 points 6 days ago (2 children)

DC, Puerto Rico, Samoa, Guam, US Virgin Islands, if you want a 51st state, there are better options that don't require starting a world war with our closest allies.

[–] hopesdead@startrek.website 14 points 6 days ago (1 children)

Why not start with the nation’s capital?

[–] khornechips@sh.itjust.works 6 points 6 days ago

Mar-a-Lago is already part of Florida, though?

/s

[–] smeenz@lemmy.nz 12 points 6 days ago (1 children)

You mean American Samoa, of course, which is an entirely separate island from the sovereign nation of Samoa

[–] themeatbridge@lemmy.world 3 points 6 days ago

You are correct.

[–] notannpc@lemmy.world 21 points 6 days ago

Of course it’s Florida.

[–] PunnyName@lemmy.world 11 points 6 days ago

Into the sun.

[–] SnarkoPolo@lemmy.world 7 points 5 days ago

How much of the taxpayers' money did that little kowtow to Dear Leader cost?

Filth.

[–] WatDabney@lemmy.dbzer0.com 16 points 6 days ago (2 children)

It's especially weird that Trump isn't the only one in the US government who's batshit insane.

I still can't quite believe it's real. I've always been a cynic and always expected the worst of the government, but this is so far, and in such an unexpected direction, beyond anything I expected.

We really are governed by demented morons.

[–] pennomi@lemmy.world 5 points 6 days ago

It’s been increasing for many decades. The reason Trump is still in office is because the legislature has such a high percentage of crazies in it.

[–] iamthetot@piefed.ca 2 points 6 days ago (1 children)

Honestly if this is unexpected, you haven't been paying close enough attention for a decade or two. Or more.

Pray tell, how many representatives will it get?

[–] hector@lemmy.today 3 points 6 days ago (1 children)

60k people on the island if I recall. I think each rep usually reps 600k or so but not sure. So one rep if they round up. Way up.

[–] thatKamGuy@sh.itjust.works 10 points 6 days ago (1 children)

They do round up, so in the very unlikely event of this ever passing - it would be given one congressman and two senators. All three would be Dems, so this will never happen.

It’s just pure rage bait, intended to distract away from the Epstein Files, Venezuela, and Renee Goode.

[–] sfgifz@lemmy.world 2 points 5 days ago

Epstein Files

Already out of the news cycle

[–] FuglyDuck@lemmy.world 10 points 6 days ago

Are we taking bets he can’t even point to it on a map?

[–] devolution@lemmy.world 9 points 6 days ago (1 children)

A fat white man. I'm not surprised.

[–] PunnyName@lemmy.world 2 points 6 days ago

Cartoons were supposed to be unrealistic.

[–] jordanlund@lemmy.world 8 points 6 days ago (2 children)

I almost want them to do it because +1 Congressman and +2 Senators. Annexing Greenland won't go the way they think it will.

[–] tigeruppercut@lemmy.zip 3 points 6 days ago* (last edited 6 days ago) (1 children)

It'd just become another territory with no representation I'm sure, like Puerto Rico or American Samoa.

[–] jordanlund@lemmy.world 2 points 6 days ago

I mean, this bill is talking about actual statehood...

[–] PunnyName@lemmy.world 3 points 6 days ago (1 children)

It will of they just kill everyone and take the land.

[–] hector@lemmy.today 2 points 6 days ago

Poison the shoreline and fresh water. The natives rely entirely on the sea. The mining will despoil the hell out of it, and the armed forces poisons any area just to give contracts to their pals to sell the shit in effect.

[–] hildegarde@lemmy.blahaj.zone 7 points 6 days ago* (last edited 6 days ago)

1 cosponsor. Ok sure. This bill goes nowhere, like the rest of them.

Any outlet that covers legislation at the point of introduction is just trying to scare you. Well over 90% of bills never even leave the committee stage. Without signs of support from others in congress, an introduced bill has less weight than a press release.

If you see the words "introduces bill" in a headline just ignore it the article is trash, solely intended to mislead.

[–] sturmblast@lemmy.world 6 points 6 days ago

These idiots

[–] MyOpinion@lemmy.myserv.one 10 points 6 days ago

House Republicans are traitors that need to be in jail.

[–] chosensilence@pawb.social 7 points 6 days ago* (last edited 6 days ago) (1 children)

yeah that's not how it works lmfao even if this passes and gets signed the world doesn't just suddenly agree to its decree. it will not make Greenland our 51st state in any real capacity other than paperwork and no enforceable action at all. ...so... ok lol. also, definitely gives us more Dem reps. that'll work out in their favor for sure. Greenland would not run Red.

[–] RunningInRVA@lemmy.world 2 points 6 days ago

So it’s not just as simple as renaming the Kennedy Center for the Arts?

[–] anon_8675309@lemmy.world 5 points 6 days ago

Stupid assholes.

[–] CharlesDarwin@lemmy.world 4 points 6 days ago

Slurp, slurp.

[–] CowsLookLikeMaps@sh.itjust.works 4 points 6 days ago* (last edited 6 days ago)

If the worst happened, Greenland would put Canada in a chokehold, isolated from European aid. Canada, the country with lots of oil that the US has threatened countless times.

[–] Triumph@fedia.io 4 points 6 days ago

That's not how that works.

[–] altphoto@lemmy.today 3 points 6 days ago

I found space on my rooftop when I climbed up there I realized there's a whole new America just waiting to be populated! 2nd floor roof America!

[–] TachyonTele@piefed.social 3 points 6 days ago

Don't be distracted by theatrics like this.

[–] Butterphinger@lemmy.zip 2 points 6 days ago

US: "So, Denmark, free for next Tuesday?"

Denmark: "February works better for us. Second Friday of the month?"

US: "No can do, torturing children that day..."
