Don't hold your breath

I'm sure the current system will collapse, I'm also pretty sure that whatever comes after isn't going to be much different or better. It'll definitely not be "lets share honesty and fairly", it'll more be like "have you heard of this new thing called the tricked down effect?"

[–] Beeen132@feddit.org 2 points 12 hours ago

Maybe it could get better if you weren't so sure that it's not gonna be?

My retirement plan was to go into the woods to die before i come too much of a burden for the rest around me. But then somebody reminded me that forests probably wont be a thing anymore until then. So even my slightly sarcastic but very dystopian plan for retirement wont work out.

In Germany we have organic waste bins. I think I'll just climb in one of them and close the lid

[–] papalonian@lemmy.world 22 points 1 day ago (2 children)

In Germany we have organic waste bins.

Sounds like some liberal commie alarmist woke propaganda to me. Here in God's country, we put our organic waste directly into the coal plants 🇺🇸🦅

I believe you mean dump into drinking watersheds

[–] lividweasel@lemmy.world 7 points 1 day ago

That sounds suspiciously like recycling, you grass-smoking hippie…

The plan was to do some geratric version of Luigi if things get bad. Nothing much to lose by then.

I've heard stuffing your pockets with coins and walking into the sea is a thing. The sea's not going anywhere and with the way things are going it's likely gonna get a little bigger.

Dirt-cheap, uh, dirt for the suicide on a budget then.

Sell tickets for people to watch you, an untrained amateur, fire yourself from a cannon. Go for a distance record and don't set anything to stop your fall.

Similar outcome, provides entertainment (not useless), you can have all the proceeds go into a trust that buys a house in a rich neighborhood, and then make it a safe haven for unhoused people.

[–] homes@piefed.world 4 points 1 day ago

This is my plan too, but I don’t have anyone around me to become a burden to.

So, I’m just gonna go die alone in the woods, for no other reason then I wanna die in the woods. Woods are pretty.

What retirement? This clowns who run the world now are behaving like selfish little kids! Arlechino Trump is acting like USA is his circus.

I also have a shotgun in case plan a doesn't work out. Hopefully my future landlord enjoys cleaning up brain matter.

[–] MNByChoice@midwest.social 12 points 1 day ago (2 children)

Your family will end up doing most of the cleaning. Your landlord will hire low wage people to do any remaining.
Please reconsider.

[–] Ryanmiller70@lemmy.zip 2 points 17 hours ago

So don't have family is what I'm hearing

[–] lightnsfw@reddthat.com 5 points 1 day ago

If I go that route anything of value will already be handed off to my family so they'd have no reason whatsoever to assist with cleanup. As for everyone else. If they don't want to do it don't take the job.

Let's play a random game of name your birth decade. I'm born in the 90s and have no retirement fund. Post the decade you're born in and if you have a retirement plan

[–] ebolapie@lemmy.world 4 points 1 day ago

I have one but it is not well-funded.

I was born in the early 90s and also have no retirement plan.

I was born in the 90s, and we all have a retirement fund, want it or not.

Literally what happened to our grandparents and parents after World War 2. And then the subsequent generation will grow up in abundant wealth, developing a greedy attitude and cause corruption, resulting in social angst which will be exploited by demagogues. Then a new system emerges which promises a better life, but that system breeds yet another spoiled generation that will cause corruption which yet again causes social upheaval that will be exploited by ambitious individuals.

Rinse and repeat.

There’s a lot of good boomers out there protesting Ice. A lot of them also fought for civil rights and gay rights. I think a lot of what we’re dealing with is the fact that our system rewards the greediest most selfish individuals in the colonialist hierarchy because it a terrible system.

[–] HasturInYellow@lemmy.world 3 points 20 hours ago* (last edited 20 hours ago)

It hasn't always been this way. We can change.

right guys?

[–] infinitesunrise@slrpnk.net 12 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

Just like Marx himself, I feel that today we woefully underestimate capitalism's capability to endlessly adapt itself to changing material and political conditions.

Like, I was about to make the joke "The first part will definitely happen" to imply that the second part will only happen with a lot of effort on our part. But now that I'm thinking about it... Neither of these things will happen without a lot of effort on our part. And even then, probably not in our lifetimes.

[–] SkunkWorkz@lemmy.world 9 points 1 day ago (2 children)

You’d probably won’t be alive to reap the benefits after a global collapse happens.

The alternative is no benefits either sooo...

[–] djsoren19@lemmy.blahaj.zone 6 points 23 hours ago

sounds like a problem that solves itself

[–] cRazi_man@europe.pub 15 points 1 day ago (2 children)

More equitable? More likely to turn into a Mad Max style free for all.

[–] tomiant@piefed.social 10 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

Exactly, more equitable!

Seriously though, post collapse won't be Mad Max, it's going to be The Road .

Yeah, we're making good progress on that first part, but global thermonuclear war is the best I can imagine as far as equality goes.

[–] plyth@feddit.org 9 points 1 day ago (1 children)

That more equitable system doesn't come from nothing. Without preparation it will be like the end of the Roman empire, when local warlords, called knights, were organising the retirement plans for the peasants.

[–] peoplebeproblems@midwest.social 5 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Yeah I'm almost certain that is exactly what is happening

[–] plyth@feddit.org 2 points 1 day ago (1 children)

So, how can it be prevented?

Fuck if I know. The rich people are really evil.

[–] notreallyhere@lemmy.world 5 points 1 day ago (2 children)

I'd be fine with just the states

[–] tomiant@piefed.social 5 points 1 day ago (2 children)

It's gonna take everything else down with it when it goes. We're all part of the same machine.

Yes. Even if the government of the USA does nothing, there will be negative impacts. The population that survives may migrate north or south. Warlords will strike out for new territories. Anything still created or grown in the USA will no longer be. Billionaires will flee to the nicer parts of the world to repeat the process. Wealth in the American stock markets will do something.

view the world with american eyes, bury the past, rob us blind, and leave nothing behind

[–] brathoven@feddit.org 6 points 1 day ago
[–] Cruxifux@feddit.nl 3 points 1 day ago

Lol fucking same. But as I’m getting older I have little faith in that anymore.
