Moderator Guidelines

Moderator Guidelines

  • Don’t be mean to users. Be gentle or neutral.
  • Most moderator actions which have a modlog message should include your username.
  • When in doubt about whether or not a user is problematic, send them a DM.
  • Don’t waste time debating/arguing with problematic users.
  • Assume the best, but don’t tolerate sealioning/just asking questions/concern trolling.
  • Ask another mod to take over cases you struggle with, if you get tired, or when things get personal.
  • Ask the other mods for advice when things get complicated.
  • Share everything you do in the mod matrix, both so several mods aren't unknowingly handling the same issues, but also so you can receive feedback on what you intend to do.
  • Don't rush mod actions. If a case doesn't need to be handled right away, consider taking a short break before getting to it. This is to say, cool down and make room for feedback.
  • Don’t perform too much moderation in the comments, except if you want a verdict to be public or to ask people to dial a convo down/stop. Single comment warnings are okay.
  • Send users concise DMs about verdicts about them, such as bans etc, except in cases where it is clear we don’t want them at all, such as obvious transphobes. No need to notify someone they haven’t been banned of course.
  • Explain to a user why their behavior is problematic and how it is distressing others rather than engage with whatever they are saying. Ask them to avoid this in the future and send them packing if they do not comply.
  • First warn users, then temp ban them, then finally perma ban them when they break the rules or act inappropriately. Skip steps if necessary.
  • Use neutral statements like “this statement can be considered transphobic” rather than “you are being transphobic”.
  • No large decisions or actions without community input (polls or meta posts f.ex.).
  • Large internal decisions (such as ousting a mod) might require a vote, needing more than 50% of the votes to pass. Also consider asking the community for feedback.
  • Remember you are a voluntary moderator. You don’t get paid. Take a break when you need one. Perhaps ask another moderator to step in if necessary.

It's NOT illegal to say "with a mortar launcher' because it's definitely an incomplete sentence.

[–] Alfredolin@sopuli.xyz 1 points 9 hours ago

With a mortar!?? That would be funny as fuck! And I always wonder and think it requires skills to correctly handle a mortar.

[–] BanMe@lemmy.world 3 points 14 hours ago (1 children)

Legal doesn't matter when the secret service starts harassing people for saying things like "Trump should go to trial," it'll have the chilling effect it's supposed to unless people fight back by saying things like "it's not illegal to wish the President of the United States were dead."

[–] i_ben_fine@midwest.social 1 points 13 hours ago

aren't those the guys who handle counterfeit money?

[–] Bubbaonthebeach@lemmy.ca 49 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Rather than a front page obit wouldn't it be great if Congress and Senate just did their job and legally removed him.

[–] daannii@lemmy.world 20 points 1 day ago (2 children)

I concur. The fact that his death seems like the only way we will be rid of him is a bigger problem than trump.

What about the next person who does all this. Like Vance ?

[–] Lutoures@lemmy.world 6 points 14 hours ago (2 children)

Vance does not have the cult leader credentials. If he pulled a "Let's take Greenland" out of his ass, he wouldn't have the same spell to keep 30% of approval.

That's why many authoritarian regimes fall after the death of the charismatic leader.

And yes, the root cause of Trump appearing in the political scene go beyond himself and point towards structural problems of US society. But now he has this power, it's a fact that his death will cause a great loss to the political power of the MAGA movement, and it'll be very hard for any successor to keep this coalition in power, specially considering they're already fighting among themselves.

Congress was envisioned to jealousy guard their own power. They have been eager to abdicate their power and responsibility to the Executive to avoid political fallout (so that they can stay in office capitalizing off the position) for decades before Trump was on the scene.

The Supreme Court has absolutely no legal oversight, and even publication of their corruption has not moved them to impose any code of ethics on themselves.

The two parties both conspire to deliver us to the same monied interests, just with different flavors of icing on top.

Trump is the culmination of the rot in the system, he is not the source of it. There is no realistic way for the system to go on, even if Trump keels over tomorrow. Regardless of if Vance can command the cult when Trump dies, the system must be greatly reformed/ overhauled.

[–] P1k1e@lemmy.world 3 points 13 hours ago (2 children)

...I can't fucking believe anyone considers that dimwit charismatic

[–] Lutoures@lemmy.world 1 points 1 hour ago

"Charismatic leadership" is an expression often used in political theory to describe leaders who are able to agrue a personal following and use it for political gain, in a level unlike that of most politicians, to whom support is way more conditional.

It' doesn't necessarily mean the same as "approachable" , or anything that "charismatic" usually is used to describe. It's been used to describe figures as awful as Hitler or Mussolini.

[–] i_ben_fine@midwest.social 1 points 12 hours ago

Turns out "charismatic" just means "spewing constantly without filter"

It's NOT illegal to form an alternative government of the United States as a micronation with a distinct name, flag, anthem and coat of arms and such (and you can still pay taxes to the current US government and call that "aid"). Forming a micronation is NOT the same as being a sovereign citizen.

[–] SparroHawc@lemmy.zip 2 points 9 hours ago

The problem is that you can't form a micronation out of land that belongs to a nation already, unless that nation cedes it to you. Until that point, you are still subject to the laws of wherever you are.

> Claims to be the land of Free Speech and the First Amendment.

> Can't make jokes about assassinating the US President.

[–] Mycatiskai@lemmy.ca 35 points 1 day ago (6 children)

They may have also meant using the 25th amendment to remove the president like their legal system allows for if Congress and the Senate weren't completely bought by the fascist billionaire class that owns the presidency as well.

Isn't this what you guys have guns for?

I hope people are organising at the very least.

[–] AnUnusualRelic@lemmy.world 2 points 17 hours ago* (last edited 17 hours ago)

Actually, no. Technically they have guns because their government didn't want to pay for a standing army (they've still changed their mind, in case you didn't follow US politics too closely).
They've just been making innumerable wacky excuses since then to try and make us believe that having 35 rifles and 122 handguns was perfectly normal.

[–] Tacitblue@lemmy.world 106 points 1 day ago (1 children)

it's funny, we know what you're talking about. We can't say what your talking about as that may involve a meeting with the SS if you are american.

[–] supernight52@lemmy.world 63 points 1 day ago (2 children)

Funny thing is, you could mean Schutzstaffel, or Secret Service. No way to know in modern America.

[–] samus12345@sh.itjust.works 10 points 1 day ago

The American Schutzstaffel, or ASS.

I agree.

The front page of every newspaper in the country has never so desperately needed an obituary on it.

Now I know what you might be thinking: never? What about that one time in the 1940s? Not even then, because even if that fucker LIVED he was on the cusp of capture. He was no longer a threat even before his obituary showed up

This time I have no faith or hope that the threat may actually be nullified at all otherwise.

[–] mumblerfish@lemmy.world 38 points 1 day ago

It's nice to see that the "in minecraft" meme has evolved to not even mentioning what to do at all, that we all just know fairly well anyway.

[–] SaharaMaleikuhm@feddit.org 15 points 1 day ago

It would be super funny.
