My friends keep telling me to get Instagram so they can send me memes.

No, thanks.

[–] baggachipz@sh.itjust.works 29 points 1 week ago (2 children)

Then they laugh and are seemingly ok with ads being sent to them about stuff that they merely talked about. Like, shouldn’t that concern them?

[–] mrnobody@reddthat.com 24 points 1 week ago (2 children)

They might be concerned, but they're more worried about fitting in with the masses than actual privacy.

[–] baggachipz@sh.itjust.works 14 points 1 week ago

When somebody sends me something from instagram, I can view it in my browser with an ad blocker and tracker blocker. Instagram makes it difficult but it’s still possible (for now)

God, i want to do horrible things to those people.

Seems pretty much anyone with a smartphone will run into that. The devices themselves are crazy surveillance tech... but fuck are they addicting.

Posted from my smartphone. -_-

I had a fake account solely for watching reels sent by friends. Not anymore, that shit freaky.

[–] cyberpunk007@lemmy.ca 11 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Tried to create a fake Facebook account recently since that's where the buying used market has gone to around here. "Take a 360 degree series of pictures of your head"

[X] close tab

[–] sparkles@piefed.zip 1 points 1 week ago

I tried to get into those “buy nothing” groups, and found I’m permanently banned. I have no clue why.

[–] jim3692@discuss.online 19 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Is it ok if I download reels and send them on Signal?

I download youtube shorts I want to share so people don't have to sully their histories with shorts

joinloops.org

for anyone else wondering

[–] Wessynessy@lemmy.world 4 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) (2 children)

What are the benefits of both? Just that they are ethically better alternatives or doo they have features that are better/ more fun/etc?

[–] pieland@piefed.social 7 points 1 week ago

they’re just fediverse versions - so you can host your own server, federate, no ads. otherwise the same

[–] technocrit@lemmy.dbzer0.com 5 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) (1 children)

The fediverse has better features.

For example on IG can only make a limited list of "favorites, but on Pixelfed I can make as many lists as I want with as many users as I want.

Perhaps the best feature is the lack of advertisements. When I go on IG, it's literally 80% promoted BS that I don't even follow.

Basically it's an app designed and developed by users with features that we want, instead of an app owned by an evil corporation overtly exploiting users to the maximum extent possible while literally supporting genocide.

[–] Wessynessy@lemmy.world 2 points 1 week ago

Thanks for a detailed response! I'll give it a go

Is there something like pipipe for Instagram and Facebook links?

Most of the time I don't even bother opening them. They make it as much of a pain in the ass as possible to view an already playing video. Mine open in Firefox focus.

  1. Link opens

  2. "Sign in for the 'best' experience"!

  3. Click on "continue on web"

  4. Quickly tap around to unmute audio as the video just starts playing.

  5. Miss the beginning part and want to view it again.

  6. Refresh page and start at step 1 and hope you do better this time.

[–] anhydrous@lemmy.world 8 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Or, worse, Xitter. My self-described "liberal" quasi-activist friend kept sending me Xitter links, even after the double salute incident, despite expressing my feelings about that shithole. Not a path I can follow on

At least use Bluesky like a normal lying-to-yourself-about-supporting-billionaires liberal.

[–] abbadon420@sh.itjust.works 8 points 1 week ago

I know the feeling. Luckily I'm not alone in my friend group.

[–] Spacehooks@reddthat.com 7 points 1 week ago (1 children)

I don't even click link. Just respond lol.

[–] Samsy@lemmy.ml 1 points 1 week ago

But bro, it was a video from my live murdered cat, wtf?

Lemmy (or in my case rather, Mbin) is increasingly all I need. And I love that.

[–] Viking_Hippie@lemmy.dbzer0.com 6 points 1 week ago (1 children)

I haven't really had the chance to test it much yet, but the Libredirect extension seems pretty promising to me

[–] justme@lemmy.dbzer0.com 4 points 1 week ago

Just tested it for Instagram, because I get a lot of that annoying BS. Unfortunately not a single instance is working for me. But afaik I might be able to soon up my own frontend instance and add it to the extension. Will check that out when I get bored.

[–] umbrella@lemmy.ml 4 points 1 week ago

imginn and proxytok are two decent frontends

[–] JuliaSuraez@lemmy.world 3 points 1 week ago

Honestly, it’s funny because it’s true 😅 different platforms, different vibes. As long as it makes them laugh, let them enjoy it.

[–] UltraGiGaGigantic@lemmy.ml 3 points 1 week ago

Dont worry, they will one day require an account to view anything like some of the other online services.

A fun mental exercise is, as a scifi hypothetical, if the Chinese found a way to make video playback force the watcher to kill their friends and family, they totally would.
