+5 Yes, Puerto Rico is widely considered a colony—or often described as the world's oldest colony—due to its status as an unincorporated U.S. territory. While residents are U.S. citizens, they lack voting representation in Congress, cannot vote for president,

While I understand most Americans are apparently racist idiots, I find that stat hard to believe.

In all the hoopla around the halftime show, I never once read anything other than he is Puerto Rican. Not even in the maga content the algorithm insists I want to see (to the extent I didn’t immediately block).

Maybe this is being too pedantic but it would be more believable if

  • “73% of Americans don’t understand that puerto ricans are us citizens”. Because we are that dumb.

Replying to that German guy somewhere in the comments - Spanish is spoken all over the us as the second most common language. Certainly anywhere in the south you’ll hear it all the time, but even up here in New England it’s very common. There’s no reason to be surprised by hearing it nor to think they are anything other than Americans who are speaking Spanish

Quick correction. Puerto Rico, not Puerto Ricans, is politically limited. Any American citizen that chooses to reside in Puerto Rico loses their right to vote (looking at you Paul brothers). Any Puerto Rican that choses to reside in any of the 50 states has the same right to vote as anyone else.

Oh btw, people born in American Samoa are US Nationals but not Citizens

So bascially they're second-class Citizens. They are allowed to freely travel withing the US, but cannot vote or run for federal office...

Laws are so fucking weird

edit: typo

Puerto Ricans have been fighting for a long time for statehood. Taking a look at the US now, I suggest reversing course. Independance would be a better choice.

[–] LibertyLizard@slrpnk.net 18 points 1 day ago (2 children)

From what I've heard there isn't really a consensus among Puerto Ricans on what they want their status to be.

[–] Quill7513@slrpnk.net 11 points 1 day ago

People indigenous to the island are very split between moving to closer alignment with the US via statehood or to move toward independence and ending the colonial commonwealth system. The only true consensus is that the current status quo is unsustainable and something needs to change.

Wow, guys. I'm Mexican and not a fan of Bad Bunny at all, but you seem really out of the loop with this guy.

He is a Puerto Rican, and in that sense he is an American citizen, but Bad Bunny is a sovereignist that would very much prefer to be free from the USA. The song Ricky Martin sang during the SB halftime show is just beautiful (listen to the Tiny desk version!). The name of the song is "Lo que le pasó a Hawaii" (What happened to Hawaii) and the lyrics talk about a strong, deep feeling of belonging to the Puerto Rico island. He talks a lot about the simple life in there and some of their traditions. In the end, the song calls Puerto Ricans to hold their flag and don't allow "them" to do to Puerto Rico what happened to Hawaii.

I was in awe to listen to at least some of these lines in the middle of the Super Bowl. Honestly, don't even try to ask me about the rest of the show.

A movement to turn pro sports into quasi nationalist rallies, with barely a peep about it, is far more alarming than ignorance about the vagarities of US territorial policy. Most people can’t even name the vice president! This is a very strange kind of manufactured outrage.

Most Americans are woefully undereducated

I'll do you one better: I didn't even know who Bad Bunny was prior to this news cycle. Not my genre of music.

But I do remember the last time Puerto Rico was hit by a hurricane, and Trump didn't do shit to help. Because he's a vile piece of shit that would rather fuck kids, his daughter, and this country rather than help anyone.

[–] AA5B@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago

At the time I thought that was a good reason why they would be better off if they chose to pursue statehood. We do much better with emergency response to states and we invest more in states for infrastructure and stuff. At least economically it would seem a strong positive.

But then Trump happened and somehow our representatives are allowing him to restrict emergency response by personal spite and and self-enrichment, so I just don’t know anymore

I didn't know where he was from, nor had I heard about him until the outrage machine hyped him up. I just assumed he was an immigrant based on the outrage, but I guess that's asking too much of the racist who can be fooled into liking Kid Rock.

[–] Devadander@lemmy.world 26 points 1 day ago (3 children)

Where you getting that 73% from?

[–] Godric@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago

Their ass, they spent all morning rooting around up there on the C-line

Source: I took the C-line to work today

I’m sure the number is ridiculously high, but it’s always funny to me when memes just throw a random percentage out there with no sources. This is done to make stupid people think this is a professional, real statistic.

So it's kinda No Taxation Without Representation situation? Or does that only apply to white people?

[–] orbituary@lemmy.dbzer0.com 18 points 1 day ago

There are lower/no taxes there. That's why so many conservatives move there, or buy property there - particularly after a hurricane. Disaster capitalism.
