I invite anyone curious enough to look up the history behind that restoration.

While it is certainly an attempt it was one born out of love and imo people are just either ignorant (understandably tho) or outright cruel.

Rural Spain is full of historical monuments in ruins and falling to dust because nobody cares. Not the state nor the church. Here at least someone did, ffs.

It gets me emottional because the ammount of hate that poor old woman got for genuinely trying to do good in her community.

LOL! Yeah, that's about it..

On the other hand, thank you for posting this picture. I actually just spent 15 minutes going down the Ecce Homo rabbit hole. What a story, this disaster of a restoration turned into an absolute boon for the town.

[–] TheMinions@lemmy.dbzer0.com 40 points 6 days ago* (last edited 6 days ago) (3 children)

Same!

I had no idea the woman actually was in the middle of her restoration, left for a two week holiday, and came back to a verifiable shit storm.

Edit: oh and she had permission to attempt the restoration!

[–] Exusia@lemmy.world 22 points 6 days ago (1 children)

She recently passed away too. Its interesting to see that the town get more popular as a result of it and she became a mini-celebrity despite the outcry of hate for the new painting by the international community.

All publicity is good publicity

[–] SlurpingPus@lemmy.world 4 points 5 days ago (1 children)

was in the middle of her restoration

I mean, no restoration that I've seen is done like that, by repainting over large swathes of the original.

[–] fushuan@lemmy.blahaj.zone 3 points 4 days ago (1 children)

So? She had permission to do it. The hate she received was completely unjustified

[–] SlurpingPus@lemmy.world 2 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago) (1 children)

Did she say upfront that she was gonna do absolute garbage of a job, that not even a first-grade college student would do?

[–] fushuan@lemmy.blahaj.zone 2 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago) (1 children)

No one knows the level of job she was gonna do because she didn't finish!

You are being extremely rude to a person that in beloved in the town right now. The hate was not from the fellow neighbours, was internationally. If you wanna criticise some one criticise the priest in change of the church that gave her permission to do so.

The priest even attempted to cover the painting to save her of the hate, in proof that he still was wanting to protect her, but the mayor of the town decided not to, since the amount of tourism actually brought money to the town.

[–] SlurpingPus@lemmy.world 0 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago)

Did you miss the fact that she redrew over the entire painting? What she did is not restoration in any sort of way, so it doesn't matter what the end result might've been. Watch any videos on how actual restoration is done.

What you're saying is “yeah she was hired to decorate my cake and instead she shat all over it, but we don't know the job she'd do if she were allowed to finish”.

She was obviously mentally deranged, and only a very simple-minded person would defend what she's done. The priest was evidently protecting the handicapped woman from ridicule and her ‘work’ from being displayed. The fact that the shit cake is now a tourist attraction changes none of this.

You're straight up roleplaying this meme:

[–] village604@adultswim.fan 1 points 5 days ago

Yeah, people definitely buried the lede on that one.

[–] wonderingwanderer@sopuli.xyz 3 points 4 days ago (2 children)

It's like that scene from Mr. Bean. Or was it Johnny English?

[–] Buddahriffic@lemmy.world 1 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Pretty sure it was that Mr Bean movie where he goes to America. I think the premise was Bean was accompanying a painting from England (they sent him to get rid of him for a while) and at some point he gets something on the painting, tries to clean it, and paint comes off, too. Then he fixes it and his host either starts crying or trying to attack him.

[–] wonderingwanderer@sopuli.xyz 1 points 2 days ago (1 children)

I think that was Johnny English...

[–] Buddahriffic@lemmy.world 1 points 2 days ago (1 children)
[–] wonderingwanderer@sopuli.xyz 1 points 1 day ago

I'm pretty sure that's Johnny English, and the youtube title is wrong

[–] foodandart@lemmy.zip 2 points 4 days ago

Hmmm. Not sure of which scene, but anything with Rowan Atkinson is valid!

[–] starik@lemmy.zip 16 points 5 days ago (2 children)

The mockery here is cruel. It took them like 3 hours to finish the shading on the upper lip.

[–] Ep1cFac3pa1m@lemmy.world 6 points 5 days ago

You just activated neurons in my brain that hadn’t fired in 20 years

[–] Raiderkev@lemmy.world 1 points 4 days ago

Can't believe they left out the nunchucks tho

[–] percent@infosec.pub 12 points 5 days ago (1 children)

Jokes aside, I still can't believe the disaster in that image. I'm pretty sure I could have done a better job with that painting, and I'm far from qualified for that job.

[–] Dearth@lemmy.world 11 points 5 days ago (2 children)

What's wild is that they've decided to keep "monkey jesus" for its cultural significance. The painting could be professionally restored but it will remain that way forever

[–] Schmuppes@lemmy.today 11 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago) (1 children)

It's widely agreed upon that the original fresco was not particularly valuable or artistically remarkable. It's not like somebody messed up the Mona Lisa or a Rembrandt. If I ever happen to be in the area, I'm definitely going to see the thing in person. It's become quite a tourist magnet, and the town is happy about it.

[–] nightlily@leminal.space 5 points 4 days ago (2 children)

It was also a work in progress. This was just meant to be colour blocking before details were added.

[–] percent@infosec.pub 1 points 4 days ago

Ohh that makes a lot more sense

[–] AnUnusualRelic@lemmy.world 1 points 4 days ago

Of course they'd say that.

[–] icelimit@lemmy.ml 6 points 4 days ago

And drew far more visitors than it did before

[–] flambonkscious@sh.itjust.works 18 points 5 days ago (1 children)

This is perfect, OP.

For those unleashed uninitiated, it's called ecce homo, I believe. There's a great background at Wikipedia as usual

Ecce homo qui est faba

[–] OwOarchist@pawb.social 32 points 6 days ago (1 children)

I wonder how nvidia's PR department is feeling about the popularity of this meme...

[–] mech@feddit.org 20 points 5 days ago (1 children)

Apparently they're going for the "You're all wrong" defense.

Strong "don't you have phones" vibes.

[–] Reygle@lemmy.world 21 points 6 days ago (2 children)

Lol
Do you think they're telling developers to make a slider in new games' graphics settings?

DLSS5

[–] Buddahriffic@lemmy.world 2 points 4 days ago

Background characters disappear at low settings, reappear but hotter^1 at higher settings. Nude at DLSS5 Premium setting.

  1. "Hotter" as defined by Jensen Huang and hotness judging expert Mark Zuckerberg.
[–] Quetzalcutlass@lemmy.world 6 points 5 days ago

Stop, you're starting to make it sound appealing.

[–] WizardofFrobozz@lemmy.ca 1 points 4 days ago
[–] Wilco@lemmy.zip 2 points 5 days ago

Nope, its perfect!
