I worked union construction for 15 years and 90% of those guys are die hard MAGA

[–] Tollana1234567@lemmy.today 62 points 3 weeks ago (4 children)

most people in trades are conservative, and mostly white people, with a side of hispanic groups. people wonder why more arnt going into the trades, likely they arnt hiring people outside of that political demographic.

I've been a scientific monitor for construction projects and they will tolerate you, but you will mostly be excluded. I of course as bearded man from the South had an easier time than some of the younger women that were my coworkers. Of course they generally don't like the monitors much, but they have clear preferences.

Honestly the drama on a construction site is peak. These grown men are so petty and cliquey

Female 15 year elevator mechanic here and I agree it’s like none of them matured past middle school. I have so many crazy, funny and sad stories. It’s like lord of the flies but dumber. I’m in school for an MA in industrial design so I can pivot out of the KKKlan in the field

[–] Zink@programming.dev 18 points 3 weeks ago

Yeah, I'm a straight married bearded husky white guy who has taken up carpentry as a hobby, and I have no interest in being part of that industry. I have a relative who is a trumper plumber and the culture fits him perfectly, lol.

It’s because when women and black people meet all the criteria and are begrudgingly allowed in that’s when the haze out circus begins. I’ve seen some horrible things and there’s no accountability. In my union in a dark blue state Union officers were putting nooses and writing kkk on a group of black men’s things to the point they had to file a police report. And the state didn’t do a damn thing. https://www.courthousenews.com/mitsubishi-accused-of-ignoring-years-of-workplace-racism/

Love the downvotes, Lemmy is still confused that there are people who absolutely love and vote for Dickfingers McGee even after everything he has done

This was literally 2 weeks ago:

GEORGIA RUNOFF: Republican prosecutor Clay Fuller won today's special election in Georgia to replace former Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene in the House, NBC News projects. He defeated Democrat Shawn Harris.

Haha, it's usually worse than that. Especially if you do manual labor and don't have a union. Friend of mine was receiving 6% of the value of his labor after we calculated it.

[–] MrVilliam@sh.itjust.works 45 points 3 weeks ago (4 children)

I wish I made 6% of the value of my labor. My power plant has $1M+ days sometimes and there's only 30 of us running it. I make good money, but not $30k/day good. A couple months ago when we saw sustained deep freeze temperatures for like a week straight, we saw $5M+ days.

We also work crazy hours for those situations. Last week I pulled 72, and the next couple weeks will be 84 hours. But at least they ordered pizza for us.

[–] TigerAce@lemmy.dbzer0.com 30 points 3 weeks ago (7 children)

When they make that much money, why don't they hire another 30 or 60 people so everyone can have a normal 32h work week? Are the employee benefits really that good that it's worth it? I hope they are much more than just pizza. Why would you let yourself be exploited by them, on such an insane level that you are willing to work almost triple work weeks? They are stealing your life while having the financial luxury to just hire more. Have you talked to your union? Work to live, don't live to work mate.

[–] MrVilliam@sh.itjust.works 6 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Lol there isn't a union here and my coworkers are too brainwashed to understand that a union would benefit them.

I would love for a Danish company to headhunt me and yank me over to Denmark. I don't think that's gonna happen though.

My company had a year where they earned $500M after tax, which was equivalent to an earning of $3.5M per employee, and I got a bonus of $6000 which was the standard bonus for all employees weighted compared to their annual salary.

That summer we had our yearly summer party in a tent on our parking lot...

[–] theolodis@feddit.org 5 points 3 weeks ago (2 children)

You greedy bastard won't think of the shareholders? I mean they invested their money! What did you do?

Sheesh, if that doesn't radicalize someone idk what does. Granted in your case a lot of that value comes from the constant capital of the plant itself but still, it is likely you make less than 6% yeah. My friends was easy to calculate because constant capital was relatively negligable.

[–] Yondoza@sh.itjust.works 6 points 3 weeks ago

Are those figures revenue or profit?

[–] Hacksaw@lemmy.ca 19 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

That's exactly it. Sure taxes take 40%, but capitalists take 100-1000% of your salary, and last I checked they don't build roads and schools.

[–] sharkfucker420@lemmy.ml 10 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago) (2 children)

Okay so I was gonna respond sooner but I was super baked and unable to answer this when I saw it last night.

You should read Wage Labour and Capital by Marx for some added context, it is short.

Basically the value of a commodity is calculate by c + v + s. c being constant capital (the value of the means of production that has been degraded to create the commodity, hard to calculate without good info), v is the amount of paid labor (variable capital), and s being surplus value is the unpaid labor.

To calculate the value of your labor all you need to know is the constant capital used to produce whatever commodity you produce and the value of said commodity. By including your wage as v you can calculate the surplus value and then compare them to see what share of the value you produce you actually recieve.

It gets harder when you aren't directly producing commodities which my friend was.

Sorry for my ignorance, but how do you calculate the "value" of one's labour? Like how would you do this for a school teacher?

Different schools have different pay grades, different subjects, etc.

[–] prole@lemmy.blahaj.zone 9 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

The owner of the construction company is being paid for the work that their employees do. All of that money, after expenses, does not go to the people who did the actual construction.

Where I live construction is one of the things that's heavily unionized. Well, local workers are. Foreign workers not so much

[–] jonesey71@lemmus.org 54 points 3 weeks ago (3 children)

But they NEED that 40% to buy more bombs to send to Israel or use themselves on the middle east.

[–] GalacticSushi@piefed.blahaj.zone 19 points 3 weeks ago

Not just bombs. They need to send Israel cash so Israel can fund AIPAC so AIPAC can bribe politicians into sending even more money to Israel so Israel can fund AIPAC even more so AIPAC can bribe politicians into sending even more money to Israel so...

[–] Tollana1234567@lemmy.today 18 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago)

the bombs are a side benefits, its really to launder the money back into the politicians pockets back in the usa, send AID/MONEY TO israel they fund us gop/dnc through AIPAC to continue thier expansionism, plus added benefited of preventing any actual change in the stage. Hakeem, shcheumer and hordes of other DINOS are fighting tooth and nail to give israel more aid. its basically the same method used for "charter school vouchers", red states allow the vouchers to be used shoddy private schools which then the schools gives the money to the gop as a kickback.

You completely forget the cost of pedo yachts and pedo islands. For shame.

[–] PapaStevesy@lemmy.world 53 points 3 weeks ago (2 children)

I'd give 100% of my paycheck to a child that eats pedophiles

[–] Donkter@lemmy.world 12 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Buddy you have got to rephrase this.

[–] PapaStevesy@lemmy.world 6 points 2 weeks ago (7 children)

Wait you pay that much in taxes in the US? I thought the silver lining of living in the US means lower taxes compared to countries with social security systems and universal healthcare.

[–] lovely_reader@lemmy.world 22 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

That's the line they feed us, for sure. But if you ever actually added up federal income tax, state income tax, state and local sales tax, Social Security tax, property tax and assorted taxes for any instance in which you might come into additional money (capital gains, interest, prize winnings, inheritance, etc. etc. etc.) most Americans would probably be shocked to learn what real percentage of our income we actually pay to the government.

[–] Katana314@lemmy.world 7 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

This is a very good reminder to me. The rich pay comparatively little on things like gas taxes, retail tax, etc.

[–] chiliedogg@lemmy.world 19 points 3 weeks ago (2 children)

No - they just pretend taxes are lower to justify not using the tax money responsibly to provide social services.

Between federal income tax, social security, and medicaid my taxes come out to about 40% off the top. Then I have to pay state sales tax, local taxes, and in many states people also have to pay state sales tax.

No see when people produce things they need to get taxed a lot so we can pay for the things they need like prisons, cops, anti homeless architecture, and the military.

But when people collect stock dividends or realize gains they only need to get taxed a little to cover the contracts they get to provide squalid food to public schools, fill textbooks with revisionist history, and prevent humanities education.

And of course the true patriots who get loans against the majority stake shares that they manipulate to steal the retirements of prolls and bribe politicians are welcomed to write those incurred debts off.

[–] helvetpuli@sopuli.xyz 9 points 2 weeks ago

The biggest part of that is social insurance. It's called a tax (FICA) in America to make people hate it.

And here's the fun part: there's an annual cap which is about the same as a construction worker's salary. Once the cap app is reached they stop deducting it. So high earners only pay it for the first few pay periods of the year.

I remember the first time I earned more than the cap. I thought somebody had made a mistake when my take-home pay went up mysteriously in the middle of the year. So imagine: Bezos and friends are all done paying FICA in the first ten or fifteen minutes of the year.

[–] TheHighRoad@lemmy.world 8 points 3 weeks ago

That's the best part: We don't know! There are so many taxes and fees and BS spread over so many things that it is very difficult to calculate the total percentage accurately. 40% seems high, but it's probably not far off when you add everything up.

Ahaha...tempting me to quit, when I need to stay employed the most. I'm this picture, and I don't like it!

[–] Wispy2891@lemmy.world 15 points 3 weeks ago

Trump paid for showing me (located with an european IP address and an european account) a facebook video ad boasting about how now overtime is tax exempt. It was awesome: it was an ai-generated pixar style ai slop about some men coming back after some work in oil field or coal mine and hugging their kids, opening the letter with a huge "pussy hair" signature saying that now overtime pay is not taxed.

In 2023-2024 I had a job where I quickly became aware that I was working much harder than they were paying me and I started to track every dollar against my efforts, becoming increasingly aware & bitter that 37% of my time there I was breaking my body as an unpaid volunteer because that's how much the govt was deducting from my paychecks. And the net pay I was left with was not enough to survive. So glad I escaped & found a slightly better situation.
