Me everyday lol

I be out here defending Harry Potter simply because the anti-HP crowd in queer spaces have become so toxic they're turning the concept of having read a book 15 years ago into some sort of puritan test of thoughtcrime.

It is okay if you liked the story. It does not make you a lizardperson antichrist lol

I literally wouldn't even know an HBO show was happening if people hadn't been rageposting about it round the clock. Every single JK Rowling update I have ever received has been from left and queer sources. I just don't understand how anyone can follow all the trivial social media accounts of a vocal fascist who they claim to hate. It's one thing when it's a politician and keeping an eye out is for the sake of your own wellbeing, but she's literally just some washed up has-been celeb. Block that shit and stop giving her new projects free advertizing, please.

[–] yenahmik@lemmy.world 10 points 2 days ago

Some people spend too much time online and it shows. There are some very drama filled spaces where it seems like people purposely follow things that make them angry and assume everyone else should be as angry as they are.

I know the algorithms encourage it, but people need to just disengage and stop giving bandwidth to the rage bait stuff.

[–] Mulligrubs@lemmy.world 3 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

She couldn't pay for better press, their vitriol is making her a bloody fortune.

Trump also comes to mind, one thing he has always been is a master of is free press coverage. He's such an enraging clown it won him the Presidency.

The press is only concerned with ratings, so they rage bait every chance they get with 24-7 coverage.

God, I hate when someone has the exact same opinion as me but they express it in such an annoying and obnoxious way that I lowkey don't want to agree. Everyone is dumber than me, and that's why they're stupid enough to do that. Frankly, they're just copying my opinions.

[–] usualsuspect191@lemmy.ca 61 points 3 days ago (1 children)

I agree with you, but do you have to say it like that?

[–] TheTechnician27@lemmy.world 36 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago) (2 children)

You're right. I, as the most superior person in this thread, have a duty to set a good example by keeping a respectful tone. I 100% agree with exactly what you said.

you might have been most superior 22 hours ago when you posted this, but i have since joined the thread

Bruh! Im with you on this for sure! Its that weird feeling when someone ridin the exact same wave as you, but they’re just flappin around on their board.

Its like Im ridin this clean, glassy idea-barrel, feelin all enlightened and tubular, and suddenly this dude drops in behind me on their moms foam board and suddenly starts shouting the same thing, but in the like most uncoolest way possible. And Im just sittin there like, β€œDude… why you gotta make our shared thought like that?”

Honestly, it does feel like they just catchin my swell instead of finding their own. Whole thing just tastes like sunscreen and feels like sand in the wetsuit, right my man.

Me with nuclear power. It is probably a good option at the moment, but some people are just so braindead about insisting it's the best possible source of energy with no downsides

[–] Butterphinger@lemmy.zip 6 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (1 children)

Ai everything

Nuclear

"uhhh... Copilot says the cooling rods aren't necessary."

🚨🚨🚨

[–] JackFrostNCola@aussie.zone 1 points 2 days ago

Cooling rods are just like limiting its power potential bro, did you know Ai only uses 10% of its brain? im removing them to fully unlock its potential.

[–] FosterMolasses@leminal.space 3 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

Dude, I was still against it back when it was argued as "relatively safe" lol

You know, before AI.

Can you imagine a single one of these trained monkey CEOs being handed the keys to a shiny new nuclear power plant at this point?? Good god, hahaha

[–] Paradachshund@lemmy.today 69 points 3 days ago (3 children)

Or when they say something you agree with for 80% of their comment and then at the very end take a hard turn into something distasteful. You were so close!

I love those. They always catch me off guard and I usually choke on whatever I was eating/drinking at the time lol

Best one I heard was a guy explaining all the bargain basement things the government does wrong, how to fight bad policy via local elections, supporting quality changes and movementd, and then ending it on flat earth because the government made up round earth too lol.

[–] Tollana1234567@lemmy.today 5 points 3 days ago

theres a sub/community for that, selfawarewolves.

[–] kuberoot@discuss.tchncs.de 14 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (1 children)

That's some "The Worst Person You Know Just Made A Great Point" energy

[–] FosterMolasses@leminal.space 4 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (1 children)

I actually feel like that's the opposite, where someone you usually can't stand makes a very well articulated and reasonable point. I enjoy those moments because it showcases dynamic character, "This person you dislike is still capable of critical thinking and worth engaging with from time to time." That tends to restore my faith in humanity a lot lol

Nietzsche wrote, "We often refuse to accept an idea merely because the way in which it has been expressed is unsympathetic to us." - Human, All Too Human

Might be a different translation

[–] darklamer@feddit.org 6 points 3 days ago (1 children)

While this quote can be found all over the internet, attributed to Nietzsche, I'm unable to find even a single source reference, no mention anywhere of from where it originates. Do you know for certain that it's from Nietzsche? I'm starting to get the feeling that it has been misattributed to him.

[–] SourDrink@lemmy.world 10 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago) (1 children)

I think it might be a different translation. Should be Human, all too human: Book 6, Aphorism 303.

I found another translation from R.J. Hollingdale.

We often contradict an opinion for no other reason than that we do not like the tone in which it expressed.

Edit: I found it! It's Kaufmann's Portable Nietzsche Page 58 Aphorism 303.

Additional edit: It's not word for word.

[–] darklamer@feddit.org 5 points 2 days ago

That's it! I finally found it now:

Man widerspricht oft einer Meinung, wΓ€hrend uns eigentlich nur der Ton, mit dem sie vorgetragen wurde, unsympathisch ist.

There are some valid reasons I can entertain that 9-11 was either planned by the US, or at least allowed to happen without interference. I don't have a strong belief either way, but I'm open to conversation.

I will not, however, engage with someone who brings up jet fuel melting beams. You sound like a dolt, and the exact mechanism of destruction doesn't factor into the matter.

[–] yakko@feddit.uk 23 points 3 days ago

I mean that's... Like, a lot of what they've released from the Epstein files was stuff so crazy that just talking about it makes you sound like a lunatic, I feel like that happens a lot. There are real conspiracies that are grounded in material aims and of a realistic scope, but there's so much added in that most reasonable people don't have the energy to sift through all the bullshit. Trying to unravel real conspiracies will ruin your life if you're not clever and careful.

[–] KombatWombat@lemmy.world 17 points 3 days ago

The thing is while the jet fuel would not have outright melted steel beams, it would certainly have weakened them enough to compromise the building's structural integrity. But ironically a lot of conspiracy theorists care more about being right than learning the truth, so will not care about nuance or acting in good faith.

You can see similar issues with anti-vaxers objecting to vaccines as unsafe because of outliers. Correlation is enough to prove them right on their points but unimportant for statistics that counter them.

It took me a while to "get" and especially get into Evangelion, and I realized halfway through that was because I was missing a lot of inherent lore that the average Japanese person, specifically young males, have as a native install. A lot to do with the typical sort of standoffish paternal dynamics I was misinterpreting as exceptional and poorly explained, whereas it might typically be seen as otherwise redundant and poor storywriting there, as well as themes of both shame and societal/filial duty.

I grew up as a western latchkey kid with no concept of most of that, at least as a rule if not the exception. The idea of a protagonist with no agency for "no reason" was extremely annoying for me to parse. And I couldn't figure out why for the longest time, because I love stories with self-sabotaging protagonists like Bojack and Better Call Saul. It felt unearned and awkwardly paced to me, but that was just my own western lens coloring my bias.

Overall, I still think the anime is trash. But at least now I can respect it lol

[–] psycho_driver@lemmy.world 16 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Me withholding an upvote when I go into the comment section and see the comment I was going to make.

I would've upvoted you, but ...

[–] Rentlar@lemmy.ca 21 points 3 days ago (5 children)

I will defend someone who says something I don't agree with, if they're being respectful and willing to admit they are wrong or open to changing their mind.

I won't defend someone saying something I think is right or I totally agree with, if they're being a jackass about it.

I've seen threads where both things happen consecutively, and they both get downvoted anyway πŸ˜….

[–] HalfSalesman@lemmy.world 5 points 2 days ago (1 children)

I don't care if someone is rude. I care if they're willing to discuss in good faith.

Someone being nice to me on here but seems to be manipulative is far worse in my view than someone who is aggressive and nasty but intellectually honest.

[–] Rentlar@lemmy.ca 3 points 2 days ago (1 children)

I can understand that, but to me they are at least loosely linked. Poor tone clouds a good argument and often is an indicator of a discussion in bad faith.

I will admit I have seen a handful of counter-examples over 3 years on Lemmy, where one or two commentors came out of the gate with an angry and accusatory stance, but both were able to reconcile with each other in later replies with cooler heads. I have more often seen much longer threads where flamebait begets a flamewar without going anywhere useful.

[–] HalfSalesman@lemmy.world 2 points 2 days ago

I've been in both. I tend to be pretty impatient and want to get to the crux of a core philosophical disagreement rather than waste time on reading people post 101 stuff at me though.

Every liberal and socialist and left leaning individual in the world

[–] vga@sopuli.xyz 2 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

Come on, that's not fair. Only like 80%.

And seriously probably much fewer if you disregard online and late-stage teenagers.

This is me and Michael Moore. He makes a lot of great points but holy fuck do I hate that bastard

He is hard to like.

off topic, but what kind of stench is on Homelander? He wears the same suit every day and it doesn't look like it breathes at all.

he never takes it off because the muscles are from the suit and not antony starr

[–] THE_GR8_MIKE@lemmy.world 9 points 3 days ago (4 children)

Being into cars and video games, this happens so frequently. Especially because I enjoy both console and PC. Both sides make me hate both sides.

[–] HalfSalesman@lemmy.world 3 points 2 days ago

I forgive some of the console users. I do not forgive the console makers.

Consoles with their exclusivity and unique & DRM'd hardware are extremely bad for game preservation.
