Can we stop pretending that downs people are all drooling smiley faces that can’t think at all?

There is a massive spectrum of capabilities and genetic complexities associated with it.

My sister has Downs and she was incredibly bright until she had a stroke as a child (as a complication with Downs). There are Downs people who live mostly normal lives.

And also, yes, I’ve had some awesome times with my sister, and the look of joy on her face when she plays sports is one of the purest things on Earth. But there was also a lot of crying and yelling and fighting in my life caring for her. The highs are definitely high, and the lows are low.

It is a disability, but I hate how anything stupid is represented by Downs features.

The image/caption adds absolutely nothing to the top text.

Huh. I did not know that Downs isn't necessarily associated with an intellectual deficit. That is useful information, thanks mate. I can see how it'd be damn frustrating seeing that as a default belief in society.

[–] panda_abyss@lemmy.ca 10 points 2 months ago

It usually is, but it’s a wide spectrum

[–] Return_of_Chippy@lemmy.world 4 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago) (1 children)

Nobody is pretending that. At least, I'm not.

[–] panda_abyss@lemmy.ca 12 points 2 months ago (1 children)

I’m overly sensitive here for sure, but Downs jokes are a kind of red line for me. It’s a losing battle, so I don’t speak up often when I see them.

The top part is funny without the downs joke, so I point this example out as just needless.

Btw I didn’t downvote you, don’t really feel like your comment is downvoted worthy.

People do pretend that downs people are eternally happy or something though. You can see it on Reddit (spits) threads whenever Downs comes up.

Yeah, its an individual personal line for you. I can respect that you'd feel frustrated/offended/annoyed/upset (whatever you feel). My goal isn't to genuinly hurt or upset anyone. I try not to engage with actual hate in almost any context. That said, I'm of the opinion that everyone has one or more red lines like that. If humor danced around everybody's individual red lines we'd have no humor. So not every joke is for everyone and that's okay. That along with the fact I was raised to use humor to help process trauma/negative emotions. For me personally, anything is on the table if the intent is to be funny and genuine hate isn't involved. I recognize plenty of people don't feel that way, that is also okay.

All good, I also enjoy some dark humour and it would offend others.

Ignoring the obvious conversation about downs, a story:

A friend of mine when we were roughly 20ish had a pregnant dog, and needed to go out of town. Asked me to watch the dog in case she had the puppies. I agreed. She then became very serious about complications in labor, and I told her not to worry, I had the vet's number, and dog's generally have an easier time of it than people. She kept going on about making sure she would be alright, and after listening to her for several minutes, it became clear she did not understand what would be happening, and was concerned there was a chance one of the babies would get stuck in the dog's butt. Because she genuinely thought sometimes babies can come out the butt if they get lost in there.

Actual good sex education is so important.

[–] ceenote@lemmy.world 19 points 2 months ago (1 children)

If she be like that I'm gonna guess she'd still have trouble feeding one positive pregnancy test.

[–] SatansMaggotyCumFart@piefed.world 10 points 2 months ago (2 children)

I usually just throw them out.

[–] TachyonTele@piefed.social 5 points 2 months ago

Just make sure no one sees you. Apparently it's frowned on to throw kids in dumpsters

[–] fartographer@lemmy.world 4 points 2 months ago

I find it really upsetting when people promote food waste.

[–] ManfredMumpitz@feddit.org 6 points 2 months ago (4 children)

Its funny, but we got to stop making fun of disabled people

[–] Return_of_Chippy@lemmy.world 9 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago)

Everyone should be allowed to participate in humor. Whether that be as the hero or the fool of the joke. Or in this case a tertiary character.

[–] danekrae@lemmy.world 6 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago) (1 children)

Haven't you heard? It's been sanctioned by the government.

It's cheaper than education.

[–] gandalf_der_12te@discuss.tchncs.de 0 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago) (1 children)

i care very little about what the government allows, if i think it's wrong, i'm gonna say it.

[–] Return_of_Chippy@lemmy.world 2 points 2 months ago

You're a real hero

[–] TachyonTele@piefed.social 0 points 2 months ago

White knight alert

[–] teslekova@sh.itjust.works 5 points 2 months ago (3 children)

The joke would work fine as Post Traumatic Dumb Shit, I think. I bet there's other better ways to construct it too, if you don't think that scans.

That's if you don't want to be buried in ableism accusations when you use it, which are, imo, getting in the way of this fine little meme.

It loses the association with "unfortunate things that happen in your head" problems, but Downs and PTSD are different categories of things anyway. Inherited vs inflicted, permanent vs temporary, etc. Doesn't quite work.

People these days are too knowledgeable not to have that part screw with their ability to laugh at the joke, even if they understand it's not malicious at all.

[–] petrol_sniff_king@lemmy.blahaj.zone 6 points 2 months ago (1 children)

My at a glance understanding of the joke is that the... young boy character? does not understand the words he's using. Not fully, anyway. Bit if a bone apple teeth situation.

Which is to say, I don't think it scans. Dumb shit sounds to me like a school boy dunk and not confusion. I think different D and S medical terms could work pretty well, though.

[–] teslekova@sh.itjust.works 1 points 2 months ago

That is a good point, it needs to read as an attempt to diagnose, not an insult. I stand corrected.

[–] Return_of_Chippy@lemmy.world 2 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago) (1 children)

I just dont care about the accusations. I know my intent and recognize the potential impact.

[–] teslekova@sh.itjust.works 2 points 2 months ago

No worries then.

[–] gandalf_der_12te@discuss.tchncs.de 0 points 2 months ago (3 children)

can we pls stop shitting on disabled people. pls

just call her "dumb" or sth, no need to call her "down syndrome"

[–] Zizzy@lemmy.blahaj.zone 14 points 2 months ago

Thats not at all how I read the meme. I see it as this idiot saying that is dumb as hell and is being mocked for it. Both parties have no idea whats going on and say something blatantly stupid not the bottom person is calling the top one dumb

[–] Return_of_Chippy@lemmy.world 7 points 2 months ago (1 children)

I won't restrict who gets to be involved in humor regardless of their role.

[–] TachyonTele@piefed.social 0 points 2 months ago

I like that

[–] TachyonTele@piefed.social 2 points 2 months ago

It's not like we called her your mom
