"We did it, Patrick! We made a technological breakthrough!"

A place for all those who loathe AI to discuss things, post articles, and ridicule the AI hype. Proud supporter of working people. And proud booer of SXSW 2024.

AI, in this case, refers to LLMs, GPT technology, and anything listed as "AI" meant to increase market valuations.

“I reached out to my good friend Andy Park, who was the genius behind creating the original Wasp super-suit and concept drawings, and I said, ‘Is this true? Is this really what’s happening?'” Lilly said in a video post reacting to reports of Marvel layoffs amid a larger Disney pivot to AI. “He said, ‘Yeah, it’s true.’ I can’t quite believe that… that Disney has let go of the artists who brought the Marvel Universe to life through their genius and that the people who invented these characters and who designed them are being replaced by AI. AI that will take their designs and take what they created and use it to create iterations of that. I am so sorry, Andy. I am so sorry to every one of the artists who were let go.”

It would mean more not coming from a antivax nutter.

I can’t quite believe that… that Disney has let go of the artists who brought the Marvel Universe to life through their genius and […] the people who invented these characters

This is literally the history of Marvel Comics, though. Way before Disney or "AI", they treated their creators like shit. Look up Jack Kirby and Steve Ditko.

This latest iteration of business as usual does show just what the purpose of "AI" is. Cutting costs, eliminating pesky labour, churning out progressively worse versions of past work at lower production outlay.

At some point "AI" is going to put enough people out of work, not just in the entertainment industry but really across the board, that nobody will be able to afford a trip to the cinema. Let's see where the blame falls then.

Kind of surprising to hear this coming from her. She's been on the Alt right anti vax train for a while

Alt/far right people tend to be extremely tribal with the people they personally know, very much an us vs them mindset.

I am not disagreeing with you, just want to point out that ALL humans are hard wired to be tribal.

[–] snooggums@piefed.world 17 points 1 day ago

The alt/far right lean in really hard and mock anyone who shows empathy for other tribes. They take it to an extreme.

Not surprising at all. She suddenly cares when it affects her earning potential knowing damn well she has no hope of another job in Hollywood. You can take the girl out of Alberta, but you can't take the Alberta out of the girl.

Two things:

  1. What does anti vaccination have to do with AI? They're not linked at the hip.
  2. People tend to care about things that damage their income.

People tend to care about things that damage their income.

but when COVID hit, she refused to mask up around her filming crews, because " she valued her freedom".

I included alt right in there, too for this reason. She's most prominently anti vax but seems to roll with that crowd.

And I'm pretty sure she's already mostly out with Marvel as it is. So this isn't affecting her income

You know what's better than a strongly worded social media post? SAG going on strike till Dis ey reverts the lay-offs.

Movie stars are so cute. "Shame on you!" aww. How about you riot with the rest of us now Evangeline? One has to wonder whether they actually inhabit the pretend world from the big screen, where no issue is complex, fights have an end, and somehow good faith and justice prevail in the end. They appear to wake up to things just a tad later than everybody else, and invariably in the most naive manner. Given their predicament, I find myself utterly incapable of sympathy. I appreciate however her kind words directed at VFX professionals and artists at large.

Slopisney? Yeah, I like that.

Slop-sney?

I'm not artistic enough, but if it doesn't exist yet I'd love to see these alternate names with the original company logos style.

Hollywood is the distraction for the masses, the rich can continue their hording of wealth as long as we are all watching the next superhero movie.

They think they can pump out films with AI data centers and no one will notice the 6 fingered Thor. Hopefully people will notice how flammable these places are when their water gets shut off and servers melt down.
