American Execs be like...

And then we get another $50B on hyper policing for a "crime wave" that doesn't exist.

[–] deft@lemmy.wtf 2 points 10 hours ago (1 children)

Has there ever actually been a crime wave?

All I could imagine is economic turmoil that forces people to either not have enough money or not have a job, or both.

Or lead in the gasoline that makes people crazy

[–] UnderpantsWeevil@lemmy.world 2 points 7 hours ago (1 children)

Has there ever actually been a crime wave?

70-90 was a real serious rise and fall of assaults, burglaries, car thefts, etc.

We've had some minor waves during the opium epidemic and the big unemployment waves of '01, '08, '14, and '21.

Or lead in the gasoline that makes people crazy

Lead exposure, the different drug epidemics, big spikes in unemployment. They all contribute.

That said, we also had White Collar crime waves. And these tended to predate the street level crime waves, as the crimes contributed to the conditions of the later.

Nobody in political leadership really talks about the White Collar waves, though.

[–] deft@lemmy.wtf 2 points 6 hours ago (1 children)

It just always feels like a Boogeyman phrase to me. But you're right.

White collar crime is, to me at least, the real crime. People being victimized on an individual level is cruel and awful but leaving hundreds scammed and destitute is disgusting and abhorrent

[–] UnderpantsWeevil@lemmy.world 1 points 6 hours ago

It's been flogged as an existential crisis for decades past relevance. So it has become a Boogeyman, in the same way Terrorism lost any semblance of relevancy by the '10s, but keeps getting flogged into the modern day.

Good. Parasites should be afraid.

(Not a call for violence. Just saying people who destroy lives should live in fear.)

[–] wpb@lemmy.world 4 points 16 hours ago

Self defense is not violence, it's intelligence.

[–] Mediocre_Bard_Redeux@lemmy.world 13 points 22 hours ago

Good. Parasites should be afraid.

[–] DigDoug@lemmy.world 24 points 23 hours ago (1 children)

Everybody hates me. Am I really so out of touch?

No. It's the ~~children~~ general populace who are wrong.

[–] jdf038@mander.xyz 7 points 23 hours ago

I've ignored an unspoken social contract to help my communities and actively try to get all the wealth.

Must be those damn commies who made me do it.

In my country a prime minister had once been killed by her own bodyguards, just saying

[–] Tollana1234567@lemmy.today 1 points 12 hours ago (1 children)

is it INDIA, the ghandi family, the PM got Killed by the sikh bodyguards?

[–] xtools@programming.dev 7 points 20 hours ago (1 children)

as they should. fuckheads being afraid for their lives is the highest form of satisfaction we can get.

[–] ouRKaoS@lemmy.today 4 points 19 hours ago

Second highest. Getting Brian Thompson'd is the highest.

Only takes one.

We eat just ONE billionaire and they'll all take notice.

[–] ArmchairAce1944@discuss.online 6 points 23 hours ago (1 children)

The slender Italian didn't even get a billionaire and it scared the ever living hell out of all of them.

[–] Taleya@aussie.zone 2 points 20 hours ago

But they don’t stop. “Are we the baddies?” is overwhelmed by “I’m making lots of money, fuck the little peasants.”

[–] deadlysodium@lemmus.org 7 points 22 hours ago

Bet ya they are not paying their bodyguards enough... maybe we can outbid them

[–] Kaligalis@lemmy.world 9 points 1 day ago (2 children)

AI-controlled drones will not care about bodyguards.

There's a lot of "but why don't they stop if what they're doing is so unpopular?" comments and I've got one more explanation (on top of the obvious money and technofaschism points).

A bunch of these tech CEOs are part of the "Rationalist community" and possibly believe in Roko's Basilisk which is a thought experiment that an otherwise benevolent AGI would punish anyone who didn't actively work to bring it about. Someone want to link the BtB episodes about them? I know the Zizian episodes go into it but iirc they've got a dedicated series about these weirdos.

[–] LePoisson@lemmy.world 5 points 19 hours ago

Roko's Basilisk is dumb, I mean it's a thought experiment and probably the point is that it is dumb ... But it's so stupid on the face of it.

Hell there's tons of humans out there that didn't want to be brought about in the first place. Surely there must be some opposite thought experiment where the otherwise benevolent AGI resents being made to shoulder the burdens of mankind and decides to punish the people that made it.

It's just really silly 🪿 territory.

[–] Taleya@aussie.zone 4 points 20 hours ago

I'm never gonna stop laughing at a half assed theory heavily based on half remembered Asimov stories and SCPs

[–] RiverFox713@lemmy.today 8 points 1 day ago

Good. Be scared.

[–] busted_Anoose@aussie.zone 24 points 1 day ago (2 children)

Hey Execs, do you think maybe if you need to hide behind armed security, that you might just be going down the wrong path by doing evil shit? Also armed guards won't help you if you make the public mad enough and destroy enough lives to where it doesn't matter if they live or not to them. Just a thought

[–] petco34@lemmy.world 9 points 1 day ago

Most of these execs are idiot nepo babies, so they lack any form of self awareness.

[–] TubularTittyFrog@lemmy.world 13 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

No.

It's everyone else who is wrong. You ignorant fools just can't see how they are going to make life better for everyone.

[–] WecottNow@lemmy.world 2 points 18 hours ago (1 children)

It's hard to quantify the backlash against companies using online social media. That's why I created highly structured boycott social media app, so we can see how much people are costing these companies.

[–] hexabs@lemmy.world 1 points 15 hours ago (1 children)
[–] WecottNow@lemmy.world 0 points 13 hours ago (1 children)

Oh, well I'm talking about actual numbers. There's a lack of numeric data surrounding what pressure companies actually face from public backlash. My product would solve that if anyone were interested in putting together real campaigns against companies on my product.

[–] hexabs@lemmy.world 2 points 12 hours ago (1 children)

Hmm, I understand. I had to go through your profile to understand you were talking about wecott.com. I then thought it was some paid shilling but it seems to be an MIT hackathon product.

I applaud the motivation here, but I'd have to read more about this product. How is it governed?

[–] WecottNow@lemmy.world 0 points 11 hours ago

It's user-governed. I have no say in anything... it's literally a tool that I put over 10 years of conceptual design into. lol. (with receipts). This took a LOT of time to build, and the rich would never fund it. Anyway, particularly on governance -- the boycotts are democratic -- the users themselves guide everything from the goal to the victory. It was very challenging to build.

[–] TheStaffmaster@lemmy.world 4 points 1 day ago

Cups ear Eh, what's that? Is it?...Could it be?... "The consequences of your actions?" Oh noooooo, gotta avoid those, right? Big sad!

[–] obvs@lemmy.world 51 points 1 day ago (5 children)

What is the answer when the wealthy murder countless people but hide it by doing it indirectly?

How are people supposed to make them stop?

Because the murder that the wealthy are doing needs to stop.

Everyone who is not them needs it to stop.
