All I could imagine is economic turmoil that forces people to either not have enough money or not have a job, or both.

70-90 was a real serious rise and fall of assaults, burglaries, car thefts, etc.
We've had some minor waves during the opium epidemic and the big unemployment waves of '01, '08, '14, and '21.

Lead exposure, the different drug epidemics, big spikes in unemployment. They all contribute.
That said, we also had White Collar crime waves. And these tended to predate the street level crime waves, as the crimes contributed to the conditions of the later.
Nobody in political leadership really talks about the White Collar waves, though.
It just always feels like a Boogeyman phrase to me. But you're right.
White collar crime is, to me at least, the real crime. People being victimized on an individual level is cruel and awful but leaving hundreds scammed and destitute is disgusting and abhorrent
It's been flogged as an existential crisis for decades past relevance. So it has become a Boogeyman, in the same way Terrorism lost any semblance of relevancy by the '10s, but keeps getting flogged into the modern day.

There's a lot of "but why don't they stop if what they're doing is so unpopular?" comments and I've got one more explanation (on top of the obvious money and technofaschism points).
A bunch of these tech CEOs are part of the "Rationalist community" and possibly believe in Roko's Basilisk which is a thought experiment that an otherwise benevolent AGI would punish anyone who didn't actively work to bring it about. Someone want to link the BtB episodes about them? I know the Zizian episodes go into it but iirc they've got a dedicated series about these weirdos.
Roko's Basilisk is dumb, I mean it's a thought experiment and probably the point is that it is dumb ... But it's so stupid on the face of it.
Hell there's tons of humans out there that didn't want to be brought about in the first place. Surely there must be some opposite thought experiment where the otherwise benevolent AGI resents being made to shoulder the burdens of mankind and decides to punish the people that made it.

It's hard to quantify the backlash against companies using online social media. That's why I created highly structured boycott social media app, so we can see how much people are costing these companies.

Oh, well I'm talking about actual numbers. There's a lack of numeric data surrounding what pressure companies actually face from public backlash. My product would solve that if anyone were interested in putting together real campaigns against companies on my product.

I applaud the motivation here, but I'd have to read more about this product. How is it governed?
It's user-governed. I have no say in anything... it's literally a tool that I put over 10 years of conceptual design into. lol. (with receipts). This took a LOT of time to build, and the rich would never fund it. Anyway, particularly on governance -- the boycotts are democratic -- the users themselves guide everything from the goal to the victory. It was very challenging to build.
What is the answer when the wealthy murder countless people but hide it by doing it indirectly?
How are people supposed to make them stop?
Because the murder that the wealthy are doing needs to stop.
