Just look inside deeper, how a lot of the electricity is made, and you'll find your steam.

[–] gandalf_der_12te@feddit.org 16 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (3 children)

yeah i guess that's fair

maybe you could even do this recursively and use the heat of the processor to drive a steam engine to produce electricity? that you then use to run the processor

[–] trollercoaster@sh.itjust.works 16 points 2 days ago

Congratulations, you just invented a new method of generating electricity...

Oh wait, it's steam again.

[–] zaphod@sopuli.xyz 5 points 2 days ago (1 children)

I don't think you want to run your processors so hot that you get steam. You'd need some kind of heat exchanger/heat pump in between.

[–] liuther9@lemmy.world 2 points 2 days ago

100c is doable

[–] bbsm3678@lemmy.world 2 points 2 days ago

Ah the efficiency dream. This is totally doable without steam: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thermoelectric_materials

[–] Rooster326@programming.dev 6 points 2 days ago

But we have a nuclear electrical plant. Hey wait a minute...

All electrical devices run on smoke. If you let the smoke escape, the device no longer works.

[–] Etterra@discuss.online 6 points 2 days ago

The magic blue smoke that used to be used in CRT monitors had been replaced with magic black smoke in flat screens.

[–] WhiskyTangoFoxtrot@lemmy.world 19 points 2 days ago (3 children)

But how is that electricity generated?

[–] kieron115@startrek.website 13 points 2 days ago (1 children)

you burn trash for fuel and then it turns into smoke and goes up into the sky where it turns into stars

[–] Aneb@lemmy.world 6 points 2 days ago (1 children)

I can confirm. I make electricity by burning my farts, they turn into diamonds after tho, maybe you're doing something wrong.

[–] WhiskyTangoFoxtrot@lemmy.world 6 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Stars are like diamonds in the sky.

Cant wait for epic games to sue for false advertising

[–] ChaoticNeutralCzech@feddit.org 2 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

During coal shortages in WWII, Switzerland used to run steam locomotives on electric heaters, combining most disadvantages of the two system (heavy, inefficient, needs wires except for about 15 minutes)

It's going to become real annoying researching and googling for (actual) steam machines. /j

Also, this isn't reddit so I feel safe saying fuck you Gabe and all your billions with years of overcharging developers, gambling for kids, and milking users, shitting on game-dev, etc. you yacht-loving fatass could not at least do something good for a change and subsidize/sell at no loss/gain instead of again milking users? At this point valve makes absurd amount of money per employee, something like next 3 companies combined. I cannot be a redditor anymore and simp for this dude like they simped for Elon.

[–] TowardsTheFuture@lemmy.zip 7 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Eh, dudes running a business fairly well (as in both making money and customers mostly happy)

30% cut is basically the same as physical and comes with handling downloads and updates and all on their servers. Could be less for sure, but when it started that was mostly reasonable. The fact that large games go down to 20% and smaller games are stuck at 30% sucks.

The gambling I agree, just because it is common across the gaming industry doesn’t make it okay. Even if how they do it is “less bad” it’s still shitty. The milking users idk what you mean outside the gambling bit but sure.

Shitting on game-dev? Him saying they need to learn AI? I agree fuck that.

The steam machine is not horrible value for a prebuilt, it’s just a horrible time for a prebuilt, and its tiny ass form factor makes for weird choices that limit it but like whatever. If you want a tiny thing to put under the TV to play games it ain’t bad, but there are also other options. Selling at a loss is generally an anticompetitive strategy to get market share over those who cannot afford to so I would generally disagree on that.

[–] REDACTED@infosec.pub 1 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

More counter-arguments

Selling at a loss is generally an anticompetitive strategy

Never said selling at loss. I said selling at no profit. Quite different. Sony does this with playstation where their margins for playstation itself is basically zero, but it's a platform like steam where steam/Sony makes money. Sure, steam machine can be used outside steam, but still, they're rich enough to do good.

[–] autriyo@feddit.org 6 points 2 days ago

Just search for a boiler or steam turbine/engine depending on what you are looking for. Steam machine isn't a common term for those things anyways, AFAIK.

[–] Axolotl_cpp@feddit.it 5 points 2 days ago

You ain't gonna search "steam machine" if you wanna build a steam engine or a boiler anyway

[–] krisevol@lemmus.org 1 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Have you seen the pay each employee gets? Everyone that works at valve are multi millionaires.

[–] REDACTED@infosec.pub 0 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Yeah, that's my entire point. The corporation is drowning in money, yet they still try to milk us

[–] krisevol@lemmus.org 1 points 2 days ago (1 children)

What do you mean milk? Steam didn't set the prices of your games, the developers and publishers do.

They also don't require that you buy their hardware, and release steam OS for free.

[–] REDACTED@infosec.pub 1 points 2 days ago

Steam didn't set the prices of your games

While they don't directly set prices, they do influence it with monopoly and anti-competitive behaviour with rules like "you can't sell your game cheaper on other platforms". Only in 2024 did they remove the controversial "no sue" clause., which then prompted bunch of lawsuits, mostly around anti-trust behaviour.

The 30% cut is extremely outdated as 100gb HDD no longer costs more than your ram, internet is not metered in megabytes and infrastructure valve uses gas gotten really cheap, so by now they're drowning in money while still not lowering fees, rising prices for hardware and practicing closed loop economy taxation (which pretty much no one else does)

[–] ddplf@szmer.info -5 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (3 children)

It costs $1000 and it's barely as performant as standard PS5, you can get much better rig for that price. Who's the target audience, can somebody explain why I'd want that?

I have the Steamdeck and hundreds of Steam games on my account so I'm relatively deep into Steam ecosystem and I'm still FAR from the fence on this one.

Can somebody explain to me why I should want to essentially donate to Mr. Yacht Collector?

[–] THE_GR8_MIKE@lemmy.world 14 points 2 days ago

Gamers Nexus specifically ran the component pricing on the thing and it came out to ~$85 over the part value. Turns out this is a decent deal in the current economy. Everything just sucks now.

[–] krisevol@lemmus.org 6 points 2 days ago

Is not for enthusiasts hangers with a rig already. It is for people new to pc gaming that want a starter machine.

[–] Rooster326@programming.dev 0 points 2 days ago

Okay so don't buy it?

Nobody asked you to.
