"We did it, Patrick! We made a technological breakthrough!"

A place for all those who loathe AI to discuss things, post articles, and ridicule the AI hype. Proud supporter of working people. And proud booer of SXSW 2024.

AI, in this case, refers to LLMs, GPT technology, and anything listed as "AI" meant to increase market valuations.

If this wasn't enough, there's even more among the silver members, such as OpenAI and NVidia.

I hate AI but anyone who wants to help fund Linux kernel development is welcome to. As long as the code remains open, what kind of nefarious thing can they really do? I think this is irrational.

Use it both as advertisement for their slop, and even ruin it at least temporarily. Sure, you can fork it due to its open source nature, but a nightmare scenario will require new volunteers (AI psychosis is kind of a plague within the industry), removing the affected code, and replace it with something that actually works. Even harder is if it just becomes spaghetti slop, the code operates mostly correctly, but hard to decipher and correct the moment it will have issues.

Youre doing the advertising for them by spamming them across lemmy.

What's the problem? All those companies have a vested interest in not letting any of those other companies from poison-pilling the kernel. I hate corporations, but they're also the ones with the money to invest in Linux instead of Microsoft 365 subscriptions.

Am I missing something?

Linus torvalds actually wrote about this in his book just for fun. He does believe in companies contributing and that not everyone was on the same page

  1. People are irrational. This is especially true to tech bros.
  2. Techbros are usually true believers.
  3. They need a sales pitch. What is better than putting AI slop code into a kernel trusted by billions of people?

Re: 3: because most of those companies probably rely on Linux for their operations, while a few like Microsoft and Samsung, do have some serious conflicts of interest.

Android is using the Linux kernel as its base.

[–] schipelblorp@sh.itjust.works 1 points 2 hours ago

Oh, I thought it originally used it as a base, then developed independently. So the Linux kernel updates find their way to android?

Not putting slop into the kernel so their servers still run without a hitch

[–] ZILtoid1991@lemmy.world -2 points 2 hours ago (1 children)

Tech bros think the user is responsible for slop, not the AI model.

They're just wrong lol
