I don't really think it's the press's fault. I think America simply doesn't give a shit anymore. They seem to be completely inured to the crime, corruption, fascism, blatant lies, performative cruelty, election interference, embarrassment on the global stage, etc.

It's very peculiar.

[–] _chris@lemmy.world 104 points 6 days ago (11 children)

I’m sure it seems like that from the outside. There’s so many of us inside that are fully sick of this, but we also all feel helpless for a number of reasons.

Nobody wants to be alone in making the first move of outward revolution.

None of us can afford to take a week off, much less the foreseeable future off to plan and execute any kind of meaningful action.

Once we lose our job from participating in said action, we don’t have healthcare anymore.

We’ve got to be so far past the point of no return that the status quo can’t continue before most people will be able to do anything.

Combine that with the press hiding most of this from the people, and people still wanting to hold out hope for…something…and you’re where we are at.

I’m crossing my fingers that the midterms (or lack thereof) will be the turning point.

[–] thethrilloftime69@feddit.online 53 points 6 days ago (5 children)

I was reading about the French Revolution yesterday and the thing that really got things started was mass starvation. Something like 90% of French citizens were actively starving.

There will need to be a singular suffering affecting 90+% of people before we'll all take to the streets and put heads on pikes. I'm guessing climate change might get us there.

[–] BoneheadBruin@pawb.social 19 points 6 days ago (2 children)

Tbh with the sheer scale of America I doubt even mass starvation will work. The government could probably just keep the states immediately around the capitol sated and leave the rest of the country to die and most people won't be able to afford travel to the capitol to riot. I bring this up in every thread but to travel from the west coast to Maryland to start a riot is the same distance as traveling from Ireland to Moscow to riot. And we have barely functional trains.

[–] thethrilloftime69@feddit.online 11 points 6 days ago (1 children)

Well there are local governments. The federal government can't exert it's control by itself.

[–] BoneheadBruin@pawb.social 16 points 6 days ago* (last edited 6 days ago) (2 children)

I mean... it literally can. Only ~20 states have their own State Defense Force and the federal government can turn any state's national guard on its own people. The national guard has been actively leveraged to help ICE brutalize and disappear immigrants and American citizens already.

Also if we were to consume Gavin Newsom, for example, that does not help us get a functional federal government back.

That starvation thing does seem to be looming. Or easily preventable disease.

[–] pixxelkick@lemmy.world 18 points 6 days ago

Or easily preventable disease.

No we already confirmed 6 years ago that wasnt enough.

[–] hanrahan@slrpnk.net 1 points 4 days ago

indeed

John Galbraith's book The Culture of Contentment helps underscore that point

I totally get your point,

I’m crossing my fingers that the midterms (or lack thereof) will be the turning point.

but a friendly reminder to everyone in that same position: hope is not a strategy. At least try to come up with a plan for when it get worse. Do not be naive; as long as it can get worse, it likely will be.

[–] _chris@lemmy.world 6 points 6 days ago

No, you’re completely right. Hope is not enough. I’m also planning, but need to have hope that others outside my circle are too.

It will get worse. In fact, it has to - or else the majority of people will just brush their hands and say “hey we fixed it, nice job” …kinda like Biden 2020.

[–] stylusmobilus@aussie.zone 6 points 5 days ago* (last edited 5 days ago) (6 children)

From the outside it looks like it’s similar to turning a big ship in a way. It’s just taking time for it to turn; meaning enough to get sick of it. It’s definitely wrong now to say nothings being done by people, you’ve only got to look at the videos people are taking of the migration police to see there’s resistance flowing through.

This situation here is a clear abandonment of media responsibility. Journalists themselves, or their profession, will take the reputational fall for this and it won’t matter if that’s fair to them or not. The right kind of reporting on this would go a long way to driving resistance against it.

Yeah I hope the midterms are somehow fair and held. It’s the best solution. I hope people turn out for them too if they are. The more that do, the harder it should be to rig or prevent voting at the polling booths.

Its not peculiar, its by design. Flood the people with so much "News" all the time that they stop paying attention. You can only keep up with so much before you just stop trying. Even those of us still paying attention have to take breaks or go mad.

[–] motruck@lemmy.zip 9 points 6 days ago (1 children)

I think you mean buy up all the news outlets. Make them mouth pieces for the rich rather than focusing on facts. Discredit news as fake and watch people turn to their echo chambers to learn about anything and nothing at the same time. How many people including yourself do you knowtjay doesn't trust the news. Gotta be close to batting a thousand at this point no?

I can’t do it anymore because the “press” are actually just fascist influencers and they are all lying. I don’t believe a single thing any journalist had to say. I don’t believe a single thing the government has to say. I’ll never respect the rapist president. I’ll never accept the heroin addict running the health department. Countries are ideas and this one is fucking dead.

[–] Bebopalouie@lemmy.ca 16 points 5 days ago

It is the presses fault. They are now owned by billionaires and they speak to whatever billionaire say to speak.

[–] Cornpop@lemmy.world 23 points 6 days ago (24 children)

What the fuck is left for us to do. I’m surrounded by low iq inbred hillbillies that eat the shit they are fed right up. Vote? I did. Against this shit. Didint work. The cops will kill you. We don’t really have any options. It’s a disaster. The pedo is on control of everything. There is no checks and balances.

well, it's not like there's a whole lot of options. We have one party that's openly corrupt pedophiles. We have a second party that claims to want to bring them to justice, but in practice they oppose only progressives and support only genocide.

"Being American" is apparently a facade based off something that appeared briefly in the 1860s.

You'd think it'd be from 1776, but they love to rip on the French who 100% carried them to independence and was still nice guy enough to gift them a statue for it too. So, first half of the 1860s; that's the first and only time where they stood up for themselves and actually won. The only time they were being American and not just playing make-believe.

The fact that an incompetent and failed narcissist businessman who has no clue about politics, speaks and thinks incoherently, and has a penchant for racism and underage girls, could become POTUS, should've been a scandal.

The fact that he got re-elected after he has proven for 4 years that he and his posse are exactly as brazenly incompetent and corrupt as the above suggests, should've been a crazy, crazy scandal.

Everything after that is just more of the same.

Still, don't stop reporting it.

[–] mangobanana@discuss.online 2 points 4 days ago (1 children)

He probably didn't even get re elected, I think him and musk cheated

[–] A_norny_mousse@piefed.zip 2 points 4 days ago

Oh they're definitely cheating. And did. Problem is you immediately sound Blue-Anon if you point that out, and nobody wanted that smell on them in late '24.

The electoral system is completely fucked up and there isn't much democracy left in the US. I wonder where it will go from here.

[–] minorkeys@sh.itjust.works 19 points 5 days ago (3 children)

No it shouldn't. You're still living in the past when morals and ethics, rules and traditions held power over our twice elected rulers. We live in a new age now where everything can be used to profits the ruling class even if it leaves it destroyed.

Americans voted for people who want to destroy the world and keep the rubble for themselves.

[–] BussyCat@lemmy.world 4 points 5 days ago

That’s why it doesn’t but it still SHOULD be a scandal

And to think Al Franken resigned his senate seat after being photographed hovering his hands near a woman's boobs. smh

[–] M0oP0o@mander.xyz 37 points 6 days ago

Just add it to the pile.

[–] Photonic@lemmy.world 26 points 6 days ago* (last edited 6 days ago) (1 children)

The Epstein class found out that scandals don’t stick anymore if you just flood the zone, which is what they did and have done ever since.

[–] some_designer_dude@lemmy.world 8 points 6 days ago (1 children)

It does appear to be working for them. I’m not sure it’s so much “flooding the zone” as it is “shitting the bed and not giving a fuck who else might be trying to sleep in it”. The Confederates collectively figured out that none of the laws have any teeth if they control all three branches, so why the hell not? It doesn’t help that they’re all like 80 years old and nothing they do will harm the one person they love more than anything or anyone else: themselves.

Voting isn’t enough. We need a lot more organization. A union of the people so we can act as one and pretty much get whatever the fuck we want so long as masses agree. It was supposed to be Democracy but that’s been corrupted so something fundamental would need to change. I think if we had more open tech (and we will) we could build the tools we need to better organize. The ruling class has every advantage, except the numbers.

There is no bottom that 'Murica can hit

They'll somehow find a new low to sink to

There's no way they'd be stepping in for some black kid accused of littering

This is to show their base of rapist losers that they have their backs

[–] LazyBaby@lemmy.zip 8 points 5 days ago (1 children)

Yeah, people don't actually care what happen to women and children

[–] FatVegan@leminal.space 3 points 4 days ago

Depends on their skin colour and more importantly on the religion of the guy. If it's a bombable skin colour, then it is a huge problem,

[–] LodeMike@lemmy.today 7 points 5 days ago (1 children)

If biden did this there's a near 100% chance trump would complain

[–] frisbird@lemmy.ml 2 points 4 days ago

And yet, the Democrats don't ever talk about this stuff

[–] HCSOThrowaway@lemmy.world 10 points 5 days ago (1 children)

The thing is, anyone already against these folks was already against them. If your hate-o-meter is maxxed out, it can't increase.

Anyone already supporting these folks either never heard about it through their echo chamber news source of choice or simply doesn't care.

That's kinda the state of (American) politics in 2026.

[–] Peanutbjelly@sopuli.xyz 3 points 4 days ago

Yay for hyper individualization. At least we don't have to question our beliefs at work or in other shared spaces, as it's only polite to talk about such energy consuming topics in small sycophantic bubbles so we can do the group style "llm psychosis" affirming of important personal beliefs that heavily contradict highly confident known sciences. World is increasingly on fire? Must be mercury in retrograde, or them immigrants, and totally not the things the scientists keep talking about.

As long as we never communicate or compare our beliefs, or how we got there. nobody has to experience the terrible pain of unlearning things that you believed in, which shaped the current you. As long as bubbles are isolated enough, and never try to actually cooperatively compare and sort through which beliefs might not be globally consistent, how how to change our actions accordingly.

Also check out the info on the recent chimp civil war to see what happens to silly little ape brains when you remove their community bridges and communication between groups, while increasing anxiety and stress around the 'other' tribes.

We can also show elsewhere in nature or social systems where defining other life as exploitable environment is how you create the grand cacophony of suffering that we see in nature, and you think the oh so brilliant humans would be able to recognize that and not do it to themselves. Unfortunately a few wealth addicted assholes have already become so parasitic that they intentionally attack and disable learning, communication, and empathy, because we out here parasite maxxing, and it's tooootally fine if it makes a better life impossible for virtually everyone.

[–] LillyPip@lemmy.ca 22 points 6 days ago* (last edited 6 days ago)

Totally expected.

Why would this play out differently? MAGA are paedophile and rape enablers, supporting sexual slavery.

Duh.

We’ve known this the whole time. Sorry you’re(traditional media) just catching up now.

It is a crazy scandal; it's just overshadowed by the larger crazy scandal that is all of America right now...

[–] rayyy@lemmy.world 8 points 5 days ago

Rapists and pedophiles are the Republican’s utopia, it seems.

[–] HeyJoe@lemmy.world 8 points 5 days ago (3 children)

Not sure how true it is but the rumor (maybe fact?) Is that Baron Trump got to be friends with them at some point over the past few years. They think they knew what they were doing keeping him close for this exact reason. Pretty sure theres other things they did together but idk enough to comment.
