Back when I was with DSA, it seemed like most of their organizing was happening in New York, LA, other Pacific Coast cities, and a few big cities in the interior of the country, like Chicago and Denver; but since then it appears they've been pushing hard for organizing in key swing states, like Michigan, Wisconsin and Pennsylvania. That's smart. I'm sure it wasn't easy, either. There are probably a good number of people who are aggressively hostile to socialists in those states, but DSA did it anyway. They did it even though they knew it was going to be hard.

See that, moderate Dems? Doing hard things can pay off. Take note. Turns out being the party of "can't be done," "not possible" and "won't work" doesn't endear you to voters. People are sick of being told that a better world isn't possible. People want hope not impotence, resignation and cynicism.

My favorite Mamdani quote:

"For far too long, our party has seen its job as managing decline instead of delivering material change for working people."

[–] Rekhyt@lemmy.world 29 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

“Our formula is the right formula,” From insisted. [...] "Our platform was for the 1990s, not for the 2030s, but the principles are the same.

This man thinks that his Clinton neoliberal ideas are only not selling because of communication issues. Absolutely delusional.

“The democratic socialists want a different system. They don’t want to further democratic values. You look at their platform: they want to get rid of the Senate, the presidency, the supreme court; they want ownership of business; they want to get rid of police; they don’t want to fund the military.”

A quick list of things that are undemocratic:

  • The Senate
  • The Supreme Court

Another quick list of things that are clearly broken and problematic:

  • The presidency (has he looked around lately?)
  • The police (I'm sure those protesters are just crisis actors)
  • Military spending (as if it weren't bad enough now we're staring down the barrel of a 1.5T$ defense budget??)

Oh look, all of the things that he says are bastions of democracy are either inherently undemocratic or in major need of reforms.

"That isn’t the historic Democratic party. It’s not the party of Roosevelt that saved capitalism and saved democracy in the world in World War II. It’s a different ideology, it’s a different party."

I don't want to save capitalism. It sucks to be living in this unfettered capitalist hellscape, even if it is better that like...Sudan right now. Israel is supported because it's a "bastion of democracy (read: capitalism) in the Middle East", and look what's happening because of it.

This man thinks that his Clinton neoliberal ideas are only not selling because of communication issues. Absolutely delusional.

Is it? The milquetoast moderately conservative program of the Clinton-Obama-Biden-era Democrats is still overwhelmingly superior for the overwhelming majority, compared to the alternative. Insofar they are not winning every election by a landslide, it's because people have been indoctrinated by pro-GOP and hatemongering propaganda. It's not obvious at all that better policy proposals will win them elections if this root of the problem isn't tackled.

[–] daychilde@lemmy.world 3 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Precisely this. We must fight against the true root of the problem: The oligarchs who have pushed fascism so they can continue to line their pocketbooks and make number go up.

They will continue to fund propaganda that convinces people to vote against their own self-interest our of fear and hate for made up bogie monsters.

[–] Hapankaali@lemmy.world 4 points 2 weeks ago

Well the thing is that for most of the oligarchs, the Democrats (whose mainstream policies are highly pro-business) are the better option as well. However, oligarchs tend to be just as stupid as the average person, and they end up both drinking the Kool-Aid and pushing it themselves, like an ouroboros of hate.

[–] fira@lemmy.today 26 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Fuck the DNC. They’ve lost the plot & long since ceased to be the party of working ppl. Well guess what dipshits: thanks to stagnating wages, there’s more working class ppl than ever. The DSA gets it & I’ll do my part to make sure they keep winning over the plutocrats in both parties

[–] daychilde@lemmy.world 12 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

The DNC can evolve. Will they? I don't know. But the thing is: Much of the US used to be against "gay marriage", i.e. basically against LGBTQ+ having equal rights. Over time as the sentiment of the populace changed, the DNC changed.

If the DNC wishes to continue to survive, they must accept the DSA and embrace it. If they do, I'm fine with the DNC continuing to exist. I'll be happier and happier the more the DSA influence takes over.

But as always: We must overthrow the oligarchs to have any hope of taking back our country from them. They are the root cause of the push toward fascism, which includes the "establishment" of the DNC. It is the oligarchs we must fight.

Although increased DSA influence is great and I support it.

The Democratic party accepted the leftwing shift when instead of doubling down on Biden's pick (Jamie Harrison) they elected a chair with a decade long track record of running fair primaries who immediately drained the "victory fund" the neoliberals accumulated and gave it back to state parties...

Blaming Martin when he assumed office in 2025 for what Harrison did 2021 to 2025 is fuckign stupid. At this point after this long, there's no nice way to put it. If you think you're politically engaged and you haven't figured this out, it's because of your critical thinking ability.

The reason oligarch owned media pretends none of that happened, is they're trying to manufacture outrage against the new DNC.

They'd rather let Republicans win by depressing the vote.

Because if a progressive wins 2028, they name the chair in 2029.

And obviously progressives are winning under the current DNC. Because the current DNC doesn't have a boot on their necks.

[–] BarneyPiccolo@lemmy.today 1 points 2 weeks ago

This on my radar now, I'll be tracking this closer.

What about the David Hogg "firing?" That seemed like a clear case of ejecting a popular progressive.

[–] Gates9@sh.itjust.works 10 points 2 weeks ago

I don’t buy it. They’re going to try to rout the movement, identify leaders and offer terms. The party leaders are craven liars and they need to be removed from power.

[–] SaltyAmerican@lemmy.world 6 points 2 weeks ago

The DNC will fight it like weve never seen them fight before

[–] homesweethomeMrL@lemmy.world 2 points 2 weeks ago

Yeah we’ll see.

[–] Godric@lemmy.world 2 points 2 weeks ago

"Electorism bad" doomers in SHAMBLES. DSA will force a shift left, and totally take over the party if the momentum continues!
