unpopular opinion: AI can be extremely useful for programming and productivity if you use it in moderation

[–] Pika@sh.itjust.works 4 points 1 hour ago (1 children)

I feel like most devs are going to agree with this. Most aren't against using AI as an assistive tech, they are moreso against using it as a generative tech. Formatting, commenting and suggestions? Sure. Sometimes it even recommends things you haden't thought of. Actually writing the code and making the entire thing is where many draw the line into "this is bad don't use it"

A lot of people are in the "it's bad for our minds, climate, jobs/economy, skynet" camp and hate any use of it at all for any reason. And while I agree it's currently being rolled out in a highly irresponsible way for the environment and setting up a huge ponzi bubble to collapse at any time, I also firmly believe China is working on ways to make it efficient and cost/climate effective.

Which means if we don't learn how to use it effectively, we'll be left behind eventually. It'll be like people refusing to use a computer. Some will be able to avoid it. But the vast majority will have to adapt.

Plus, if some of us don't learn how it works, how will we spot what it and its corporate overlords are doing?

That's not including the niche use cases where it can help push forward scientific and medical advances. (these are not LLMs though)

All the people vibe coding and the managers using it to make decisions with half-ass human thought process are probably going to be anti-ai when it burns them. One of the biggest lessons that always stuck with me is "garbage-in, garbage out" - and a lot of people are using garbage to build and make decisions.

Mathematics is something anyone can enjoy.

Downvotes take me, I'm ready.

[–] GarboDog@lemmy.world 2 points 23 minutes ago

As a fellow math lover this is not an unpopular opinion lol

[–] cantstopthesignal@sh.itjust.works 2 points 31 minutes ago* (last edited 29 minutes ago)

I think that people who hate math mostly just hate the way it's taught and have mentally blocked themselves from ever trying again. I also think it's cultural. There's no reason so many other countries have absolutely no problem with teaching what is considered very advanced math concepts to young students while many in the US struggle to even pick up basic concepts in secondary school and college. It's learned helplessness.

some violence needs to be fought with violence, actually

[–] faerbit@sh.itjust.works 1 points 14 minutes ago

This is not unpopular. This is the reason why countries have a police force. Or an Army.

[–] BigDiction@lemmy.world 2 points 54 minutes ago

Charlie Kirk admitting that gun violence is a cost of mass gun ownership is the most honest thing that guy ever said. A factual assessment that every 2A supporter should recognize.

Politicians should not have security, if they are going to have security near them it should only be for the safety of the local environment and for non elected officials. My biggest problem with Jan 6th is that they were a bunch of filthy fascists and not that they wanted to lynch Congress, frankly speaking it'd be funny and politicians are easily replaceable even the ones I vaguely like.

Human life is cheap and in the case of politicians all but forfeited apon their oaths.

Yeah that's about the vibe I'm going for.

all money should be physical

currently only 1 of every 10 USD is physical and the rest are digital. I don't know how that works so I don't like it.

(hey you asked for unpopular opinions not good ones 😆)
