I'm in my 40s, and last time when I was at McD I saw some 20-somethings sitting at their table, looking at the liner notes of an AC/DC CD they had no doubt grabbed from the second hand store one block over.

I almost went over to say "oh wow, am I ever happy to see you kids enjoy classical music, eh?" but I didn't, because this is Finland and talking to random people at McD is considered weird, of course.

90s? what about 00s? It's been 26 years since the turn of the century.

[–] meme_historian@lemmy.dbzer0.com 22 points 2 days ago (2 children)

Always remember: talking about 90's grunge bands today is the same as talking about the early Beatles in 1996 💀

[–] architect@thelemmy.club 4 points 2 days ago

Yes but our 90s bands are popular with the kids, at least.

When I was a kid in the 70s, Grease was huge, glamorizing 1950s "oldies" music like it was from some long-ago era. That's only 20 years. That's like glamorizing music from 2006 today. The 90s are definitely "classic rock" now. Trippy.

[–] TrackShovel@lemmy.today 14 points 2 days ago

What people who were kids in the 70s are still ALIVE?! /s

[–] h4x0r@lemmy.dbzer0.com 5 points 1 day ago

blink 182 has always been dad rock lmao.

Nobody likes you when you're 53.

[–] Lennny@lemmy.world 2 points 2 days ago (2 children)

Converge is Dad rock. Fucking Dillinger Escape Plan is too. Thank God our Dad rock isn't just yacht rock, that shit blows.

They were playing Viva La Vida in the grocery store. I'm like... Okay, grocery store, I get you're trying to "cater to my demographic" since we're the "new olds" who now regularly shop for produce, but who the fuck thought Viva La Vida was a good "millennial shopper" music choice for picking out produce and scrutinizing cereal boxes? I died inside. Sacrilegious.

[–] meat@lemmy.blahaj.zone 2 points 5 hours ago

That was at a thrift store today and they were playing Nirvana. I didn't mind that.

[–] chiliedogg@lemmy.world 4 points 1 day ago

Just a reminder that Super Mario Brothers was released closer to World War II than to today.

[–] clifmo@programming.dev 10 points 2 days ago (1 children)

She's breakdancing, as is tradition

[–] eyelevel@lemmy.world 4 points 2 days ago

She looks sick af!

[–] AceFuzzLord@lemmy.zip 5 points 2 days ago (1 children)

I mean, yeah, it's retro music now. And in my opinion is best played on a retro Sony Discman with appropriate retro headphones. I mean, how else can I best enjoy my For Squirrels CD or Blues Traveler or Local H or... you get the point!

Only problem is the fact my discman is a battery hog.

[–] solarspark@lemmy.ml 2 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Anyone listening to 90s music today will miss out on an important element that is lost today: the CD skips.

[–] AceFuzzLord@lemmy.zip 1 points 1 day ago

Had to look up CD skips to be sure we were thinking of the same thing. Pretty sure you can emulate that using a similar setup to what I have: a portable LG USB disc drive and VLC. IDK if this is a me issue specifically, but VLC loves to cause the first few seconds of any song on CD to skip when using that portable disk drive of mine.

I'm 2023 I turned on the radio for the first time in years and the DJ says "now for a throwback song, Thrift Shop by Macklemore" and that made me (1) feel old because that song came out while I was in college, and (2) realize the song was over 10 years old at that point.

[–] UselessAsshole@lemmy.world 4 points 2 days ago

I hear he barely finds time or energy to mackle at all anymore.

[–] Simulation6@sopuli.xyz 1 points 1 day ago

Oldies used to be 50-60s music. Then they made 70-80s oldies and stopped playing Billy Holly altogether. I stopped listening to the radio around that time since the halcyon days of AM were over.

[–] SnarkoPolo@lemmy.world 6 points 2 days ago (1 children)

When did Vampire Weekend become "classic rock."

My daughter has a vintage clothing store.

Early 2000s is considered vintage.

Just pull the life support plug now please.

I don’t mind because I see more kids wearing clothes with “classic” bands like Sublime and Soundgarden and Nirvana and Biggie than bands that were “classics” when I was in high school

People thought I was weird for liking Zeppelin in the 90s.

[–] hdsrob@lemmy.world 12 points 2 days ago (3 children)

I see a ton of kids wearing Nivrana shirts, but not sure if it's actually because they know who they are, or they just like the shirt (it's always the same shirt).

Halo 3 came out almost 20 years ago, so did Hatsume Miku

[–] BilSabab@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago

my cousin refused to play MGSV because he doesn't play "old ass" games. i felt personally offended.

[–] JasonDJ@lemmy.zip 17 points 2 days ago

Red Hot Chili Peppers, the band, has existed for 44 years.

I'm reminded of this every time I spot Flea in Back to The Future (Needles), which itself is 41 years old.

[–] xorollo@leminal.space 2 points 1 day ago

Lmao, I once had a group of students excitedly tell me about this retro band they found, "the backstreet boys". I wasn't even 30.

[–] OwOarchist@pawb.social 16 points 2 days ago (2 children)

What do you expect, listening to music from the previous century?

[–] Lost_My_Mind@lemmy.world 14 points 2 days ago (2 children)

To be fair, the 90s were awesome.

This whole century has sucked since 9/11

That was me watching that Apple TV show Invasion. In the first episode, a kid has headphones on and someone asks what he’s listening to. He says something like “oh just some classic music”… and it’s Green Day..

But then I remember Dookie came out over 30 years ago and I cry again lol

I, for one, like my gray hair. I feel wise.

[–] sploder@lemmy.world 3 points 2 days ago

I once heard two tweens in line at target talking and one said what’s your guilty music pleasure?? And she said “ don’t laugh at me but I like matchbox 20 they’re really old my dad likes them “ LMAO I died inside

[–] whoneedsgravy@lemmy.zip 10 points 2 days ago (2 children)

A kid once said to me “well you were born in the 1900s…”

I was there when Siamese Dream was released. I was there, man.

[–] YiddishMcSquidish@lemmy.today 3 points 2 days ago (3 children)

I've accepted hearing rhcp on the classic rock radio station. You can be old, it's ok. You can't fight time, but you can damn sure remain immature AF!

[–] __Lost__@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 2 days ago

My local oldies station was playing them and nirvana and pearl jam and similar bands in the late 90s. It was weird, like this song is only 5 years old, why is it an oldie? But since i was a teenager, it qas great for me.

I'm 40 and I also do now, just to piss off my peers that turned into their parents, and to remind myself to keep exploring new music so that I don't become one of these people that get stuck in time and unable to relate to newer generations.

I like '90s music (it's my childhood decade) but I also dislike people who act like things "back in their day" are objectively the best, because I heard all that shit before from old people when I was a kid.
