What if I don’t want the person I am texting to laugh out loud? What if I want them to die in a ditch?

Instead of "LOL" say "Hell yeah!"
Since text is hard to decipher emotion, I always add emojis or emoticons to let others know that I’m in a good mood and am enjoying the conversation.
I don’t really care if the other person doesn’t like it, at least I don’t seem like a sour puss the entire conversation. :-)

When I do add the 'lol'
I had a younger guy at my job ask me if I was mad at him once because I used punctuation in a Teams message. Nah, bro, I'm just in my 40s.
Go harder and use a semicolon next time.
Pretty common. Experimentally, it seems the implicit formula many use for IM is something like
Fewer than K words + a period = probability P(deliberately curt) = 50%, where K is at least 5, and P increases logarithmically as K approaches 1.
Which is how, to someone using this formula internally, “Great.” can denote exasperation, “Thanks.” can imply strained manners, and so forth 🤷
Texting people who never experienced talking to other humans is really exhausting
I remember when I started encountering somewhat younger adults verbally spell out chat acronyms like “lmao” and “rofl.” I thought it was hilarious, but eventually realized there had been a social shift. Interactions had become online-first, and for some younger people that was basically all of it, and I wasn’t sure how I felt about that.
I've been told by a Gen Alpha that I give off the same vibe for using periods to end my texts.
Why so hostile?
I'm the worst at adding lol to everything and I simply can't stop. It feels too weird lol
So true lol
Curious if you're a millennial. I never used to use lol, then everyone I texted was using it and I felt like if I didn't I was coming across as too serious and not friendly so I started using it, then people started to make fun of everyone who used it and say it was a millennial thing and now I'm so self conscious every single time I use it but I can't stop
It's definitely a millennial thing! I embrace it now because fuck it, I'm old it's fine haha. Younger people are going to find me cringe no matter what lol
Are you cringe or just a mirror of their own internalized shame, lol.
a millennial thing
I’m old
/me crumbles to dust

Yeah, those 40 are too close right now lol
Im 41 and time just wont stop going lol
The habit runs deep. I remember everyone using "lol" constantly on ICQ and AIM lol
I never really used "lol" and even when I sometimes want to, it just feels weird so I end up not to.
I'm still the same, just with smiley faces :) used to practically use them as periods at the end of a sentence :D
Sent my wife a meme the other day. She was sitting across the room from me and texted lol as her reply. I was like, no you didn't.
Or an emoji
Emojis are perceived differently by different people. For example:
🙂
What does it mean? Am I friendly? Or am I imagining the sound it would make if I slapped you in the face?
Or this one:
😉
Am I being ironic? Or am I trying to get in your pants?
Such mystery.
the most difficult for me is "😅", i just don't get it most of the time
You clearly are trying to fuck me. 🥴
What a ridiculously unserious ‘serious face’
or apparently if you posting on the fedi, cause nobody on here likes to be happy >:( and takes everything super serious
Fuck those grumps ✌️
Funny, because this is what I think when someone says lol. Just a blank, expressionless face whenever I send someone something funny. That, and lmao or rofl. I highly doubt anyone has ever resorted to rolling on the floor from laughing so hard at something sent in a text.
👍🏻
Pooping face
Maximum violence: "K."
Sure lol
Millenial spotted.
good meme
lol
