In large crowds there's no need to be social, you've come full circle.

[–] ExcessShiv@lemmy.dbzer0.com 39 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Don't know how it is for OP, but just being in a crowd like that would drain me instantly even if I don't need to interact with anyone there.

[–] leg@leminal.space 5 points 2 days ago (1 children)

That's me too. The sheer noise of it all. The heat. The smell. Fuck all of that.

"Close up" (look ahead, don't make eye contact, serious expression or non-expressive) and just walk away towards the nearest way out, going around people or just "excuse me" and pass them until you're outside that area.

I can see the problem if it's a closed space, you don't have independent means of going home (i.e. need a car and you didn't came with your own or have to wait for public transport) or you're with somebody and can't just dissapear without telling them you're leaving, but judging by the picture and given what the OP said, one might just be there by oneself and it just looks like a street fair in a park so the fastest way out is just to the side and into the park so this one seems to be a pretty straightforward situation to exit.

Alternativelly, just find a quiet corner (for example, behind the sales stands or at least to side away from the main crowded area) and go into observer mode - just watch people going by (if your humour goes that way, you can start mentally comenting how people act in a David Attenborough voice as if in a Documentary) and/or how the businesses are operating in terms of how they're organised and do things. Just keep it logical and analytical (maybe with a touch of humour) - basically treat it as if you were one of the people working in one of the businesses, somebody working security or just an observer: you don't need to be physically outside to be "outside", you just need to playact as if you're an outsider that's not there as part of the crowd (like the people in working in the businesses or doing security). That should let you partially recharge the batteries.

It's one of those things I learned with age - if you're not comfortable there, just leave. Might have to tell somebody I'm leaving if with a group (otherwise people might worry) and might have to navigate the fucking crowd until I get to the nearest exit if it's a closed area, but in my experience even with all that "just leave" is almost always the best possible option at least if you're by yourself of just out with friends (and even if with a date or family, just be open and honest about how big crowds make you tired - if you don't know it already you'll discover that plenty of people feel the same - and they'll probably be fine with leaving with you or with you leaving and them staying).

Exactly. Crowded street is easy to deal with than an office party.

I have a theory that perfect chaos is perfect equilibrium.

In absolute chaos everything is the same because everything is perfectly equally possible.

So absolute chaos is really the same as absolute stillness.

It makes sense.

Full circle.

Aumm.

Worse situation: being trapped at a family gathering in a rural relative's compound that you are socially obliged to attend without any friend or independent mode of transport. Also, you're expected to serve food to and clean up after creepy uncles who would shamelessly harass you in public.

I've abandoned families for less

Let's just assume this statement doesn't include any children in it.

[–] serendepity@lemmy.world 25 points 2 days ago (1 children)

I think I’d actually prefer crowds like that. There are so many people that you become insignificant and barely draw any attention.

Exactly what I was thinking

As if I'd go to something like that in the first place.

[–] ParlimentOfDoom@piefed.zip 15 points 2 days ago (1 children)

I stopped going to this one park that host multiple different ethnic food fests throughout the year. Every single one looks like this. They're not fun. It's like an hour plus wait to get to one booth, and they don't even have the prices listed (stupidly overpriced) or the menus visible while you wait.

The whole point of those is to try multiple things, but the format kills that opportunity.

[–] lokalhorst@feddit.org 2 points 2 days ago

That is true with a lot of things. Same with over tourism - if I am pushed through the Collosseum with hundreds of people then fuck it, the Colosseum is not fun anymore.

Horrible place if you need to find someone.

Perfect place when you don’t want to be found.

[–] BarneyPiccolo@lemmy.today 8 points 2 days ago

My social battery dies the moment I SEE something like this. I'd just look at that crowd, and nope right on back home.

[–] UnpopularCrow@lemmy.world 10 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Find a dog! Dogs are the best even when you don’t want to socialize. 🐕

Invested in a flock of honey badgers. Festivals are a breeze now. Got a bit of a wrap sheet, though.

[–] Zannsolo@lemmy.world 6 points 2 days ago

Pfft, as if I would take my social battery to something like this.

Ohh no i have a lithium ion social battery, take me out of here or i'm gonna spontaneously combust now.

[–] anarchy79@lemmy.world 1 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

Oooh. Wanna spontaneously combust at the same time?

Use my superpower — not being noticed.

[–] anarchy79@lemmy.world 3 points 2 days ago

Trust me, nobody notices anyone or thinks about any of us at all.

This wouldn't bother me, my social battery only runs low when forced to talk to people. That's why I work in a dark, loud spicy box.

[–] Salamanderwizard@lemmy.world 2 points 2 days ago

I just do as my ma would do. Find path and move through. If someone gets in your way "Excuse me." Didn't move? Say it louder and a little more rude. When they move and give you a look, just go. Don't stop. What are they gonna chase you? That's weird. Fuck em.

Make em move till you are outta that shit.

[–] Kolanaki@pawb.social 2 points 2 days ago

I'd jump off the nearest bridge, but that's also full of people. 😭

[–] pedz@lemmy.ca 1 points 1 day ago

This is me trying to find a nice place to watch the fireworks in Montreal then realize 10 minutes before it starts that I'll have to go through that crowd when it's over, so I just turn around and go back home pre-emptively.

Eh, it’s not the social battery at this point that is the issue. Even if the battery were good, the people all meandering unpredictably and too slowly would be frustrating AF.

Time to pull a Francesco Schettino and run away in a most inconspicuous manner regardless of the consequences
