On social media, I see ragebaiting posts and it occurred to me that they are honeypots in disguise. If I say too much, it could be used against me, as I plan to join a union.

[–] captainlezbian@lemmy.world 4 points 1 hour ago

I'm a lot more comfortable with people knowing what my genitals look like than most people are and yet even I draw the line well before insurers or law enforcement get a peek

[–] Rivalarrival@lemmy.today 5 points 1 hour ago

Filing accident reports, my contact information is made public record, and lawyers and shady chiropractors line up to try to fleece me. Yes, I have something to hide, or rather, someone to hide from.

[–] Isa@feddit.org 11 points 4 hours ago (1 children)

There are even some body-parts of mine, that I am ordered — by the law itself — to hide in public.!!!1

[–] ArmchairAce1944@discuss.online 1 points 47 minutes ago

You mean you are not a fan of little Richard and Fanny? That is terrible! Do not speak to me again!

[–] rebelsimile@sh.itjust.works 31 points 6 hours ago (2 children)

People have been murdered for wearing glasses, please believe your minor social associations and opinions and thoughts can get you killed

The big thing that people always seem to forget is that there also doesn't need to be a reason. People are weird and do weird things. To others, these weird actions are often interpreted as having malicious intent.

Crimes will be manufactured. Enemies will be created. Just look at ICE.

[–] Zorque@lemmy.world 4 points 5 hours ago (1 children)

Those still have reasons, theyre just not usually as direct.

[–] treesapx@lemmy.world 1 points 3 hours ago

There might be motivation or bias, but not reason.

[–] inconel@lemmy.ca 80 points 8 hours ago (1 children)

How alternative medicine advocates target people right after diagnosed cancer

How people who just lost their loved ones gets menorial service ads

There's legit moments you become emotionally vulnerable and if they knew they'll definitely prey on you

[–] bedwyr@piefed.ca 13 points 8 hours ago

Those are low key violations too. You just wait. Social scores parsed by bad faith palantir type organizations used secretly against us in ways we won't be able to be sure of or challenge, losing one that job, that loan, getting worse treatment from authorities. Later even being used to send paramilitary thugs to target one even. Paramilitary as in like pround boys types under the wing of the party. Ice is not that, they are a security service, I don't care how many times it's repeated it doesn't make it correct.

Data fabrication is its own risk in this. Assuming we live in a society where a govt can argue it has all this information, they could make shit up & conjure the “evidence” to support their version. Because the apparatus is established as “we know everything & can uncover the ‘truth’”, they could falsify files, they could plant files on devices, and they could edit information at a grander scale than in the past. Flock’s financial backing is connected to a company that makes money from footage editing. If they establish, “Flock shows footage of reality,” while being able to manipulate it, then we’re all a deepfake away from being accused of shit we didn’t do. That’s like Black Mirror episode 1.

[–] NocturnalMorning@lemmy.world 5 points 5 hours ago

They do that anyway

[–] Stern@lemmy.world 68 points 9 hours ago (7 children)

"So when can we put cameras in your bedroom and bathroom?"

[–] ILikeBoobies@lemmy.ca 4 points 4 hours ago (1 children)

People carry their phones to both.

[–] myyass@lemmy.world 1 points 56 minutes ago

My iphone really doesn't like that I have aluminum tape on the cameras and a water resistant case that I have to essentially shove in my mouth and use speaker by my ear to use it.

[–] wreckedcarzz@lemmy.world 43 points 9 hours ago (3 children)

"why do you wear clothes?"

[–] DarkDarkHouse@lemmy.sdf.org 6 points 5 hours ago (1 children)

“why do you lock your phone?”

[–] CADmonkey@lemmy.world 2 points 1 hour ago (1 children)

"Why do you have a lock on your bathroom door?"

[–] ArmchairAce1944@discuss.online 1 points 42 minutes ago

Why do you even HAVE a door?

[–] IrateAnteater@sh.itjust.works 7 points 7 hours ago (1 children)

Depends on what time of year it is.

[–] ArmchairAce1944@discuss.online 1 points 41 minutes ago

And if you are with someone special...

[–] wonderingwanderer@sopuli.xyz 3 points 5 hours ago

With IR and RF technology the way that it is, you might as well not be wearing anything in the eyes of the tech spooks behind the panopticon...

[–] Elgenzay@lemmy.ml 2 points 5 hours ago (1 children)

Dyson's toothbrush camera was never for your mouth

[–] 9point6@lemmy.world 25 points 9 hours ago (2 children)

[–] wonderingwanderer@sopuli.xyz 4 points 5 hours ago

[–] kettuli@lemmy.world 21 points 9 hours ago (1 children)

[–] wonderingwanderer@sopuli.xyz 5 points 5 hours ago

surveillance is about datamining, and profiling to manipulate, control, and market. Not just market products and news but to lead the person profiled down a specific path.

we are about to have the control of our life and world view completely taken from us moreso than what was done with the analog methods of media marketing and later organic digital era which we are in the process of leaving.

it's really what every ancient culture warned us about. this is the false god. you don't need to be

Yeah no I really don't have relationship data lol

[–] fdnomad@programming.dev 29 points 6 hours ago (1 children)

no data is also data, they love targeting singles

[–] TexasDrunk@lemmy.world 12 points 5 hours ago

There are several whole ecosystems dedicated to it.

[–] ramble81@lemmy.zip 11 points 7 hours ago

Saw this concept in another thread. Paraphrasing and adding my own stuff.

Two words: dynamic pricing. Every company will start setting prices, using your tailored data, to extract the maximum amount of revenue from you that they can. And i guarantee, it won’t be cheaper than you pay now.

[–] dual_sport_dork@lemmy.world 10 points 8 hours ago

That, and even if you're not considered part of whatever targeted group the current regime hates today, it doesn't mean they won't invent a new targeted group tomorrow that just so happens to include you.

This is before getting into all the false positive "identifications" of "criminal behavior" aimed at demonstrably innocent people e.g. as is already happening with the current Flock camera debacle.

No government has any legitimate reason to surveil its own citizens, and if any such excuse is generated to justify it in the beginning it is guaranteed to devolve into a tool of oppression afterwards. Once you give up rights there is no reality in which any government will voluntarily give them back.

[–] RampantParanoia2365@lemmy.world 16 points 9 hours ago (1 children)

You have social security and credit card numbers, and porn searches you sick fucking perverted freak.

[–] otacon239@lemmy.world 7 points 7 hours ago* (last edited 7 hours ago) (1 children)

I’m thankfully vanilla as hell. If my porn search history were to be leaked, they’d be like, “that’s it?”

[–] NocturnalMorning@lemmy.world 2 points 5 hours ago

You don't have any kinks?! What a weirdo

[–] stoy@lemmy.zip 9 points 9 hours ago (1 children)

If you have nothing to hide, then how can I trust you?
