People need to learn that Apple is like all companies and treat consumer friendly actions like any other feature to add or cut when they think it is the best competitive advantage they have to play.

Gaben where is my steam phone ?

[–] ouch@lemmy.world 19 points 5 hours ago

We need smartphones that we can actually own and control. Root access with locked bootloader and good security.

Apple being Apple, in the end.

Stopped updating my iPhone 16 Pro in hopes of jailbreaking it one day, it would be nice to find a Linux phone as well someday with decent hardware.

[–] Eximius@lemmy.world 4 points 6 hours ago* (last edited 6 hours ago)

Have a look at Volla Plinius.

Still figuring it out, camera software definitely lacking, waydroid support still in development xD But hey, I love this thing.

[–] myyass@lemmy.world 1 points 5 hours ago

Same here. The hardware is not bad but oh boy is the software the biggest pile of shit I've ever had to use. And I want to use my librem 5 (linux) phone but you need a stack of pokemon cards as batteries if you want it to last a day. They really should sell a charging deck for spare batteries so you can hot swap them.

love my fairphone.

it's a real bummer that graphene won't work on it though. lineage does though, so there's that.

Apple doesn't care about user privacy, was that meant to be surprising?

[–] NotEasyBeingGreen@slrpnk.net 19 points 10 hours ago (2 children)

I don't like Apple. I find their UI to be hard to use and counter-intuitive. Their walled garden / vendor lock-in is a model of monopoly behavior that is terrible.

However, unlike most other US tech giants when you use their stuff you are the customer, not the product. It is in Apple's interest to keep their customers happy.

So on one hand it is surprising that they would upset their customers like this.

However, capitalism dictates that if their is also a chance of making money by making you both the customer and the product, Apple has to take it.

So on the other hand completely unsurprising. 😅

[–] Caesium@lemmy.world 17 points 10 hours ago

as a public company, it was bound to happen. shareholders ultimately come before the customer. Just because they weren't the product, doesn't mean apple actually cares about the consumer

[–] Doomsider@lemmy.world 1 points 7 hours ago

Oh that was some good capilitist propaganda. Apple wants to keep customers "happy". Oh I get tickled thinking people are naive enough to believe this crap. Thanks for making my day.

[–] Treczoks@lemmy.world 28 points 16 hours ago

Oh, how unexpected!

[–] auzy1@lemmy.world 32 points 17 hours ago* (last edited 16 hours ago) (2 children)

No way? Apple? OMG.. They'd never... Would they?

In case people haven't worked it out, Apple's business model has always been screw-everyone, to the point that they even sent out letters to other resellers customers (at a unrelated Apple reseller) to buy Applecare...

In fact, I would be surprised if they also weren't using the App store metrics to identify ideas/apps they should copy and target too (or, companies to buy).

If you spent money for that lovely premium computer hardware they sell, you only get updates for a few years, if you bought it at the end of the cycle.

If you remember Antennagate, Steve bent himself out of place to pretend their problem was the same as their competitors.

Multi-Touch phone. "Oh we patented that". They'd hate for their customers to mistake them for inventing multitouch. All those customers who came into our reseller who heard "macs can't get viruses" were just their own stupidity. Not misleading advertising

I earn my paycheck with photoshop, premiere and lightroom. I am trapped in the apple ecosystem and I'm being held hostage by Adobe, an m5 macbook pro is the best way for me to edit pictures with on a 10 hour flight without the battery crapping out. If there was an alternative, I would buy it in a second.

I have 4 thunderbolt ports, good battery life, decent silicon but a shit OS that's just slightly better than windows 11. Somebody please build an alternative that supports Creative Cloud because I'm tired of getting fucked in the ass.

Hell, while you're at it build something open source to replace Creative Cloud and make it the industry standard.

in a few exceptional cases around the very well known architecture transition that was announced in 2020. They will maintain older mac OSes that are intel compatible, so intel not completely unsupported.

Aside from that, Macs typically get many years of OS updates.

[–] adarza@lemmy.ca 1 points 6 hours ago* (last edited 5 hours ago)

golden gate, out tomorrow iirc, the first macos that's apple silicon only, and the last to support intel applications via compatibility layer.

tahoe, the previous version and last to support intel cpu, will get two more years of updates. the last intel cpu mac wasn't discontinued until 2023.

there is no further upgrade path from apple for anything that cannot run golden gate. it's e-waste to most, a linux goldmine for a few. just like every pre-8th gen era windows pc, but at least with windows you can trick the current version to run on the relics that don't 'officially' support it.

[–] Epp@lemmus.org 8 points 16 hours ago (2 children)

Lol. Right... That's why my MacBook Pro is collecting dust while the spec-inferior MacBook Air I was required to purchase to keep getting OS updates is now my development machine... 🙄

[–] webghost0101@sopuli.xyz 4 points 12 hours ago (1 children)

You don’t need to run macos on that older machine.

I distinctly remember how at some point the “best all around laptop for running windows” was a MacBook pro,

Ofc by now more people are catching on they are much bettered served with linux..

[–] Epp@lemmus.org 1 points 9 hours ago* (last edited 9 hours ago) (1 children)

That would be GRAND if Apple didn't unnecessarily lock iOS compiling to only the very latest MacOS, and iOS application development is the only reason I even own Apple products.

[–] webghost0101@sopuli.xyz 1 points 6 hours ago

The actual fuck? I didn’t know this, how is that even legal…

Apple only updates their computers for about 6-7 years. After that, no new MacOS updates. Architecture changes are unrelated, but, yes, they did that twice in the past 20 years (Microsoft and Linux both support mostly the same architectures they always did, with the itanium builds, or other funky architectures that never succeeded).

In contrast, even Microsoft only JUST broke backwards compatibility with old processors (and, have only done it once).. And I'm not even sure that's a hard cut off (as, I've seen older CPU's than 7XXX series with windows 11 being sold)

Apple profits on both the OS, and the hardware directly. They're in full control, and it isn't as though they need to support a RANGE of hardware. And they charge a premium for this hardware.

As BJW mentioned, even worse, developers hoping to develop for Mac OS or IOS NEED to buy an Apple computer to ensure compatibility with the latest builds. Microsoft doesn't force you to buy a Surface if you want to develop for them. On Linux, you don't need a specific system either

with windows 11 it depends a bit, there's cpus you were able to install win11 with some workarounds but that due to missing cpu instruction sets can't run newer builds

so the latest win11 major update running on a machine below official system requirements is no guarantee of the next one doing so as well

Apple is relying on an opt-in procedure: When activating Siri AI, the manufacturer asks for help in improving the chatbot, as developers with access to the release candidate of iOS 27 report.

The update will be released to the public on Monday, September 14.

You can either agree to this or press a visually inconspicuous “Not now” button. The dialog cannot be completely dismissed. Users can switch it off again after activation in “Settings > Analysis & Improvements”.

[–] adhdsergio@lemmy.world 2 points 2 hours ago

Ah, glad to see some people read the artcle

[–] PierceTheBubble@lemmy.ml 51 points 19 hours ago (1 children)

I really can't stand the "Not now", where "services" (including Google's backup service) prey on the user accidentally agreeing one day.

[–] MBech@feddit.dk 4 points 6 hours ago

I keep getting them on my tv asking permission to show me ads. "not now" buttons deserve to be outlawed by the EU. If they can expect me to turn it off in case I change my mind, I can be expected to turn it on in the same way. Not by hoping someone in my household accidentally click "Oh yes, please bombard me with capitalist bullshit, PLEASE!"

[–] TransNeko@lemmy.world 14 points 19 hours ago

I'm jaded enough to expect that the "not now" or "no" button is secretly a "yes but make it look like the option is declined" button.

Can’t we just make this opt in??? I guess that’s the reason we don’t get Siri AI in the EU for now

[–] kingofras@lemmy.world 70 points 23 hours ago (3 children)

It is opt in. Due to capitalism these sites have to resort to clickbait.

[–] chillpanzee@lemmy.ml 57 points 22 hours ago (1 children)

The article doesn't really misrepresent anything... Apple is indeed walking back their promise, and their doing it the T&Cs nobody reads, while doing "opt in" by forcing users to make a choice on this based on deceptive doublespeak.

[–] zikzak025@lemmy.world 49 points 22 hours ago (1 children)

Yep. They're moving it to a request that you can't say "No" to, only "Not now". Eventually they'll forego the request and just slap it into a "By using this device, you agree to..." statement.

[–] credo@lemmy.world 24 points 21 hours ago (1 children)

Or they’ll just keep bothering the shit out of you until you agree. That’s what “not now” means in the Apple world.

[–] kingofras@lemmy.world 9 points 17 hours ago (1 children)

Look I get that Apple bashing is popular on here, but that’s not what apple does.

The not now is only and annoyingly so, to nudge people to update or upgrade OS versions. License agreements are always agree or decline. And toggles are toggles. Once they are off they are of aand on remains on.

It would have been good to share this during the keynote too, I agree, but considering where they stand on consent and privacy vs the AI behemoths and meta or alphabet, they are still by far the lesser evil of most of Silicon Valley.

According to the article, it is opt-in but you have to of course trust the mega corporation at their word

[–] DeathsEmbrace@lemmy.world 39 points 23 hours ago (1 children)

Which means eventually its going to "accidentally" be opt out as a ~~bug~~ feature.

Your average apple user must have a wall of those

[–] echodot@feddit.uk 12 points 17 hours ago* (last edited 17 hours ago)

I always assumed that they were just lying about there "privacy commitment". No corpo type is going to be able to resist leaving that much data on the table. Nonetheless people quite prepared to eat up for the claim and criticise Google, who at least honest about it, it was a completely unfounded claim made by the company itself the very people most incentivize to lie.

[–] LeftReddit2@lemmy.world 17 points 19 hours ago* (last edited 19 hours ago) (3 children)

Having dicked around with Local LLMs, they do get better the more they learn about you. But going through what these things figure out is kind of horrifying.

Like looking into the training data they find out, they can infer a lot about you and your methodology and it is creepy. Like really creepy.

I'm not anti-AI by any means. I have a Local LLM Agent in my router to keep an eye on things in case anything fucks up and it's pretty good as my little administrator, but still. It knows a lot about me to the point I had to catch myself to not fucking call it "he" or "they." It's an object but it's an object with a frightening amount of info on me. I just wish the average populace had this level of think of what you are giving up.

If you're not that techy... well first, what the fuck are you doing on Lemmy and on the Tech server? But then I want you to think about this. If someone stalked you for a week, what could they find out about you? How much do you think they would learn?

That is how these huge companies are and especially AI. They're stalkers who manage to learn a lot about you by just observing you.

Can I ask what your setup is?
