Fuck AI

"We did it, Patrick! We made a technological breakthrough!"

A place for all those who loathe AI to discuss things, post articles, and ridicule the AI hype. Proud supporter of working people. And proud booer of SXSW 2024.

AI, in this case, refers to LLMs, GPT technology, and anything listed as "AI" meant to increase market valuations.

And multiply that for the tech CEOs and managers of those devs.

All these self-declared Oppenheimers claiming that "AI will kill us" should be listened to when they keep working on that, and treated accordingly: as terrorists with nuclear weapons.

Do you think this gives the AI companies more credit than they are due? It implies they actually have the ability to achieve this, and I just don't think they do.

AI is, in fact, an existential threat.

The issue isn't that AI is super intelligent. The issue is that AI is super dumb.

The reason it's an existential threat is that humans are dumb too, and we've been caught numerous times putting dumb AI in charge of automating very important decisions that affect life and death.

Legislators are writing laws with AI. Police are using AI to determine who to arrest. Lawyers are arguing cases with AI. Judges are basing their decisions with AI. Militaries are automatically generating and approving assassination lists with AI. And the leaders of the most powerful military in the world is now working to build autonomous weapons with AI.

Shortly after the US bombed a girl's school that was targeted with AI, the UN had a meeting to discuss how to regulate the use of AI in war. There was no discussion of banning it. Even the UN is planning to use AI in weapons of war. This is an existential threat to all life on earth.

Seems to me that this is focused on intent more than ability. Once the ability exists this law is pointless, the cat is out of the bag.

Yeah all the financial frauds and cybercrime would be enough. This sort of AI doomerism is just another form of booster narrative

I think it’s less about what the AI companies can achieve and more about what the AI itself can achieve

Maybe they don’t, but that’s a hell of a gamble in the name of…slop and pornification?

Maybe they don’t have the ability to achieve this, but at the very least they have certainly built the one that could build the one that can achieve it.

This would all be a little less concerning if robotics wasn’t racing ahead at leaps and bounds at the same time.

TIL that planning to murder the entire human race could have the same average sentencing length as murdering a single individual.

Sigh. If only Bernie hadn't been screwed by his own party.

Nothing makes sense and everyone's motives are opaque.
