Assembly Bill 2164 authored by Assemblymember Rebecca Bauer-Kahan (D-Orinda) would have prohibited California’s governor from recognizing a request for extradition of a person related to their providing a legally protected healthcare activity in the Golden State to transgender individuals, or if they provide reproductive services. It provided certain exemptions, such as an extradition required by federal law.

For someone like Newsom there will never be a right time or manner to implement protections for trans people. And there will always be some clever excuse for which to cling. But when they are called to protect the interests of the powerful, they will break any precident or boundry to achieve those aims.

And I thought he was coming around on transgender rights, sigh Fuck you Newsom

He also vetoed telework protections for us state workers and we are on the verge of a strike because his admin has returned our union's proposals with... ZERO. Literally, NOTHING. Their response to our demands in union negotations was 'how about nothing, instead?'

He has clearly become red-pilled, idk what's wrong with him but the most cynical interpretation would be money, stupidest interpretation would be he thinks this will help him become president.

On that note, when I see news covering Cali state worker telework, they love to go to the streets and find everyone they can to interview who's attitude seems to be "fuck you, I can't work from home so you shouldn't either"

I can't help but feel like that's intentional to turn people against remote workers

I mean... Even if they're just selfish assholes, do they not get that traffic is getting worse again because agencies and businesses are forcing return to office? That more people working remote is actually good for people who can't for whatever reason too?

Sorry, tangent; but GN's attitude on this has yet another incredibly frustrating and bad bit of policy from him

I really hope he doesn't run for president, and if he does, that he gets shut down early in the primary.

Only way this makes sense if he takes health care out of it and specifically frames it as "You don't get to constrain the powers of the governor."

I can also see a flaw in the law... what if some state wants to extradite someone for medical malpractice?

"Oh, nope! They do gender affirming care! Doctor Mengele is now safe from extradition!"

Either way, it will be fascinating watching him try to weasel his way through the primaries on this.

[–] VeryVito@lemmy.world 13 points 5 hours ago

We can't let him win the primaries. He's probably the one candidate who could keep any Democrats home.

[–] EbenezerScrew@lemmy.world 5 points 4 hours ago

Get fucked Gavin.

[–] ImgurRefugee114@reddthat.com 21 points 6 hours ago

They hate you and want you to die.

(Repeat until it sinks in)

Our next President-apparent. Fucking hell, this is who they're going to run against Vance, aren't they?

[–] unspeakablehorror@thelemmy.club 7 points 4 hours ago

Thankfully he is not favored currently, but its very close. I can promise you I will gladly devote a chunk of my life to volunteering for a candidate running against him in the primaries, to keep him out of the white house. Send him back to the Napa vineyards where scum like this belongs.

[–] phdepressed@sh.itjust.works 25 points 6 hours ago (1 children)

He's the one money will support but there is precedent for that to not matter. See Clinton v Obama, Jeb v Trump and various smaller races.

[–] criss_cross@lemmy.world 16 points 6 hours ago

Definitely won’t have my vote in the primaries.

[–] theuniqueone@lemmy.dbzer0.com 14 points 6 hours ago (2 children)

I have no idea what the red line is for "leftists" defending this guy both as governor and a presidential candidate.

[–] floofloof@lemmy.ca 15 points 6 hours ago (2 children)

Do people who call themselves leftists support him?

[–] danc4498@lemmy.world 3 points 3 hours ago (1 children)

As a leftist, I would vote for him for the same reason I'd vote for Hilary Clinton. To prevent the Republicans from taking over. That's about it.

[–] starman2112@sh.itjust.works 3 points 2 hours ago

If he wins the Republicans take over anyway

It's often used interchangeably everywhere.

[–] modestmeme@lemmy.world 4 points 4 hours ago (1 children)

His official explanation:

“While I share the author's views on the importance of protecting these important healthcare services, extradition is an exclusively executive function. When discretionary, that discretion is appropriately placed with the Governor. I am troubled by the precedent that would be set if an outgoing administration agreed with the Legislature to erode the executive authority of an incoming Governor based on their shared policy preferences, regardless of how righteous and well-intended those actions may be.”

He doesn’t want to set the precedent that such actions can be mandated in advance by an outgoing administration.

[–] MagicShel@lemmy.zip 15 points 4 hours ago (1 children)

Good thing! If there's anything Republicans all respect, it's precedent and norms and settled laws.

[–] rockSlayer@lemmy.blahaj.zone 1 points 2 hours ago

Yea, and also we know they don't care about rules so I'm going to pass a law to gerrymander the state because that's what they want to do

His reasoning makes sense at least. Didn't michigan or Wisconsin do the same thing? It was clear a Democrat was gonna take over for a republican as governor, so they quickly passed a bunch of bills stepping power from the governor.

[–] Sunflier@lemmy.world 1 points 3 hours ago

so they quickly passed a bunch of bills stepping power from the governor.

That happens more than you'd think, but at least having to do that first might let a few more people squeeze in services and then be protected by ex post facto.
