Moderator Guidelines

Moderator Guidelines

  • Don’t be mean to users. Be gentle or neutral.
  • Most moderator actions which have a modlog message should include your username.
  • When in doubt about whether or not a user is problematic, send them a DM.
  • Don’t waste time debating/arguing with problematic users.
  • Assume the best, but don’t tolerate sealioning/just asking questions/concern trolling.
  • Ask another mod to take over cases you struggle with, if you get tired, or when things get personal.
  • Ask the other mods for advice when things get complicated.
  • Share everything you do in the mod matrix, both so several mods aren't unknowingly handling the same issues, but also so you can receive feedback on what you intend to do.
  • Don't rush mod actions. If a case doesn't need to be handled right away, consider taking a short break before getting to it. This is to say, cool down and make room for feedback.
  • Don’t perform too much moderation in the comments, except if you want a verdict to be public or to ask people to dial a convo down/stop. Single comment warnings are okay.
  • Send users concise DMs about verdicts about them, such as bans etc, except in cases where it is clear we don’t want them at all, such as obvious transphobes. No need to notify someone they haven’t been banned of course.
  • Explain to a user why their behavior is problematic and how it is distressing others rather than engage with whatever they are saying. Ask them to avoid this in the future and send them packing if they do not comply.
  • First warn users, then temp ban them, then finally perma ban them when they break the rules or act inappropriately. Skip steps if necessary.
  • Use neutral statements like “this statement can be considered transphobic” rather than “you are being transphobic”.
  • No large decisions or actions without community input (polls or meta posts f.ex.).
  • Large internal decisions (such as ousting a mod) might require a vote, needing more than 50% of the votes to pass. Also consider asking the community for feedback.
  • Remember you are a voluntary moderator. You don’t get paid. Take a break when you need one. Perhaps ask another moderator to step in if necessary.

I made this gif using Blender after being inspired by a recent trip through a thread.

I did make a few different versions that I'm gonna use the hell out of lol

Source video Fair warning it's loud.

Honestly it's really well edited! It looks like it's one of those perfect looping gifs that we used to see back on r/highqualitygifs

[–] Gormadt@slrpnk.net 14 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Thank you!

People really are sleeping on Blender's video editor, it's gotten really good lately

[–] LasseKB@sopuli.xyz 3 points 2 days ago (2 children)

Blender has a video editor? Blender, the 3D modelling program?

[–] atopi@piefed.blahaj.zone 4 points 2 days ago

Using plugins, you can make an entire game with both 2d animated sprites and 3d models, sound obviously, a trailer, all without leaving the app. You can even take notes

[–] TheSambassador@lemmy.world 4 points 2 days ago (1 children)

It does a lot of stuff.

Used to have a pretty cool game engine in there too!

[–] atopi@piefed.blahaj.zone 4 points 2 days ago

The game engine got forked

I don't really like to block. I see toxic or antisocial opinions as a problem for these small communities I post in, not just a problem for me. I prefer to push back on them or better yet come to an understanding with them when they appear, rather than put "see no evil" blinders on my account. Everyone else still sees them. They still make the community I'm posting in worse when unaddressed.

When I do block, it's a whole toxic com like news@lemmy.world that I don't want polluting my all feed.

[–] ARMADILLOMANIA@lemmy.today 6 points 2 days ago (1 children)

I guess I'm built different. Never blocked anyone. Even in disagreements and bad takes I try to understand what is going on in people's minds. I also believe that having wide range of perspectives trains my compassion. Although, I'd still rather read leftist infighting on Lemmy than any political garbage fire on other platforms... until morbid curiosity takes me elsewhere again.

[–] Gonzako@lemmy.world 4 points 2 days ago (1 children)

I barely block people too. Only if they're spammers

you added text to a video in blender? how does that work, I thought blender was mainly for 3d stuff

[–] Gormadt@slrpnk.net 20 points 2 days ago (2 children)

Blender has a really capable video editor

The text is just a standard element added in that and then hand tracked and keyframed because motion tracking was failing me (super low res noisy footage)

Blender has a lot of cool things in it: 3D modeling, 2D animation, 3D sculpting, story boarding, VFX tools, video editing, and probably more that I'm forgetting

Hell I use it more as a video editor than as a 3D modeling tool lol

[–] TropicalDingdong@lemmy.world 9 points 2 days ago (1 children)

This looks like better motion tracking than kden

[–] Gormadt@slrpnk.net 21 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Hearing that makes me pretty happy

Blender's motion tracking typically works really well but for this footage I did it by hand adding key frames every few frames based on the amount of movement I was seeing

It's unironically pretty fun to do

[–] TropicalDingdong@lemmy.world 7 points 2 days ago

Yeah I've been using kden because it's editing features have a lot of nice to haves, but getting smooth tracking is just always too tedious. The whole transform editing frame work sucks donky balls.

I used to animate 2d stuff in blender by just adding emissive textures to planes and using an orthogonal camera. This was back before the video editor was improved.

[–] atopi@piefed.blahaj.zone 1 points 2 days ago

Blender is one of the best 2d animation software according to a lot of people

[–] anothercatgirl@lemmy.blahaj.zone 2 points 2 days ago (1 children)

can you give a blender tutorial for this?

[–] Gormadt@slrpnk.net 2 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Like tracking things on footage?

Yeah I can probably do that, gonna be a bit to slam something together (got to get reference shots and whatnot together)

yay thanks I'd appreciate that u can also repost someone else's work

[–] Teilzeitlaurer@piefed.world 19 points 2 days ago (1 children)

I agree. I’m pretty sure the text was added in post.

[–] ignotum@lemmy.world 14 points 2 days ago (1 children)

No it's real, i had a chair like that, the text is only loosely attached to the frame which is why it jiggles around a bit

[–] Gormadt@slrpnk.net 6 points 2 days ago

One might say, the text on your chair had jiggle physics.

There's more.

My fav.🥰
blocked direct actors v blockers

[–] atopi@piefed.blahaj.zone 1 points 2 days ago

I have blocked a single person

I can still see their comments for some reason
