Moderator Guidelines

  • Don’t be mean to users. Be gentle or neutral.
  • Most moderator actions which have a modlog message should include your username.
  • When in doubt about whether or not a user is problematic, send them a DM.
  • Don’t waste time debating/arguing with problematic users.
  • Assume the best, but don’t tolerate sealioning/just asking questions/concern trolling.
  • Ask another mod to take over cases you struggle with, if you get tired, or when things get personal.
  • Ask the other mods for advice when things get complicated.
  • Share everything you do in the mod matrix, both so several mods aren't unknowingly handling the same issues, but also so you can receive feedback on what you intend to do.
  • Don't rush mod actions. If a case doesn't need to be handled right away, consider taking a short break before getting to it. This is to say, cool down and make room for feedback.
  • Don’t perform too much moderation in the comments, except if you want a verdict to be public or to ask people to dial a convo down/stop. Single comment warnings are okay.
  • Send users concise DMs about verdicts about them, such as bans etc, except in cases where it is clear we don’t want them at all, such as obvious transphobes. No need to notify someone they haven’t been banned of course.
  • Explain to a user why their behavior is problematic and how it is distressing others rather than engage with whatever they are saying. Ask them to avoid this in the future and send them packing if they do not comply.
  • First warn users, then temp ban them, then finally perma ban them when they break the rules or act inappropriately. Skip steps if necessary.
  • Use neutral statements like “this statement can be considered transphobic” rather than “you are being transphobic”.
  • No large decisions or actions without community input (polls or meta posts f.ex.).
  • Large internal decisions (such as ousting a mod) might require a vote, needing more than 50% of the votes to pass. Also consider asking the community for feedback.
  • Remember you are a voluntary moderator. You don’t get paid. Take a break when you need one. Perhaps ask another moderator to step in if necessary.

49 gold bars?!? 39 gold bars is a crazy thing to find digging. I wonder how much you get taxed when you find 29 gold bars. Would you report 19 gold bars? If I found 9 gold bars I think at most I'd be able to part with 1 of the 2 gold bars that I found.

[–] Agent641@lemmy.world 3 points 52 minutes ago

while digging

See, this is why it's very important for men, and women, to dig. Wherever you are, home, beach, park, just have a bit of a dig. It's fun and free!

[–] HootinNHollerin@lemmy.dbzer0.com 11 points 2 hours ago

I definitely would’ve absconded with that shit

[–] Varesti@lemmy.zip 2 points 1 hour ago* (last edited 1 hour ago)

Maybe he found 100, who knows?

[–] MimicJar@lemmy.world 5 points 2 hours ago

I counted, 49 bars in the picture. Hopefully that saves someone else the trouble.

Tap for spoilerUnless I'm lying...

[–] LazyOldPervert@lemmus.org 5 points 2 hours ago

Hands down would have taken it all and never spoken to anyone about it but the people I sold them to.

[–] TrackenDaKracken@lemmy.world 5 points 3 hours ago (1 children)

I think finding the gold would be a strong motivation to discover a way to launder it. I don't know how to do it, though.

Long term plan, but...

Begin legitimately prospecting a piece of land legally in Alaska, document that you do so, do some substantial digging/panning etc.

Melt a large bar down into much smaller amounts that are worth only around $500 to $1000 in weight. Sell the melted gold at a local gold precious metals dealer in small batches over the course of many months/years. Claim the profit on your taxes as spoils from your prospecting.

This technique would not work with huge amounts or quantities, and even as I described it, it may bring an audit, since it is likely most prospectors are not that successful.

I may have buried them back up and then taken a shit at the location. Then, under the cover of night, returned to retrieve.

[–] piconaut@lemmy.ca 159 points 7 hours ago (1 children)

I can't believe someone buried 49 gold bars over here!
Where did they even get 43 gold bars in the first place?
Oh well, I better go turn these 38 gold bars in to the police.

[–] PixeIOrange@lemmy.world 68 points 7 hours ago (1 children)

Police: o thx for the 13 gold bars!

[–] Susaga@sh.itjust.works 42 points 6 hours ago (1 children)

Police: Hey, chief! Someone just handed in 8 gold bars!

[–] Dagnet@lemmy.world 35 points 6 hours ago* (last edited 5 hours ago) (1 children)

Police chief to the press: The young man turned in 3 gold bars to us, what an example

[–] Susaga@sh.itjust.works 25 points 6 hours ago (1 children)
[–] blimpkit@lemmy.ml 14 points 4 hours ago

Audience: Honey, they stole 3 gold bars from local pd.

[–] StupidBrotherInLaw@lemmy.world 107 points 7 hours ago* (last edited 7 hours ago) (9 children)

There is absolutely no way I'd have turned those in.

Edit: I found the article, the lad may have a payout coming to him.

It is now held in Brussels as authorities investigate its legal ownership. Belgian law mandates a five-year waiting period for claimants; afterward, the find could be divided between Kobe and the property owner if no owner comes forward and it's not criminal money.

[–] yakko@feddit.uk 104 points 7 hours ago (3 children)

Hope he gets his due. I cannot fathom the mind that sees Fuck You-money and immediately thinks "oh gosh, I need to give this to a cop!" But I'm sure he meant well.

[–] Kyrgizion@lemmy.world 47 points 6 hours ago* (last edited 6 hours ago)

He wasn't alone when he found it. It was an entire construction team, building and digging on a municipally owned site which was publicly accessible and almost certainly monitored, if remotely.

There was no conceivable way to keep that find quiet under those circumstances.

So if he did manage to pinch off one, props to him.

[–] mr_rusty_shackleford@lemmy.world 66 points 7 hours ago (17 children)

Same, but probably difficult to turn $10M in gold into spending money without someone noticing.

[–] tanisnikana@lemmy.world 43 points 7 hours ago* (last edited 7 hours ago) (3 children)

Yeah, if I found like a hundred thousand in cash, it wouldn’t get into a bank account, I’d just be buying groceries and retail purchases in cash for a long time, and saving the money I would have spent normally. Maybe asking places to make change so if the serial numbers get noted, things get spread about a bit.

[–] crypt0cler1c@infosec.pub 2 points 1 hour ago

Imagine doing that 98 times

[–] plateee@piefed.social 3 points 3 hours ago* (last edited 3 hours ago)

Don't forget any home improvement tasks. Need your yard leveled? Landscapers would love to give a slight cash discount.

Tree needs taking down? Cash.

Tuckpointing a chimney? Cash.

Annoyingly, you can't actually use "cash" cash for a cash down payment on a house. Mortgage lenders like to know where the money is coming from.

[–] DickFiasco@sh.itjust.works 53 points 6 hours ago* (last edited 6 hours ago) (1 children)

hundred thousand in cash

groceries

In the U.S., that would get you enough food for weeks!

[–] rockSlayer@lemmy.blahaj.zone 15 points 6 hours ago (1 children)

Seriously. Loaded up on groceries this weekend, and total cost for 1.75 carts was well over $600

[–] ximtor@lemmy.zip 11 points 5 hours ago (2 children)

What the actual fuck is going on over there. My condolences

[–] quill7513@anarchist.nexus 3 points 3 hours ago

just everything being expensive because we pay the monetary price of the colonial wars our oligarch overlords enact abroad to enrich themselves

[–] buttmasterflex@piefed.social 15 points 5 hours ago (2 children)

Just some minor societal collapse. Don't worry, we'll totally get better...

7*7=49

Must have buried a square of them (wink wink)

[–] BigDiction@lemmy.world 6 points 5 hours ago

Must have been San Francisco 49er fan

[–] JustPlainDave@lemmy.zip 24 points 7 hours ago (4 children)

Why the fuck would you give them to authorities?

[–] tjoa@feddit.org 20 points 6 hours ago (2 children)

Maybe it’s illegal, it’s vastly different from country to country but last time I checked finding treasure on your own property does not mean you own it 100%. Which i think is crazy but yea.

[–] bertlewirth@lemmy.world 1 points 2 hours ago

Which is pretty fucking stupid because if a mining company finds loot, they’re allowed to go mine it for decades and make billions.

[–] zarathustrad@lemmy.world 16 points 6 hours ago (1 children)

I remember when we could "find" treasure currently owned by other civilizations and throw it on a boat, take it home and just claim it was "found". Times change I guess.

[–] rumschlumpel@feddit.org 4 points 4 hours ago (2 children)

If some group of US soldiers in Iran find a heap of gold bars, they're definitely not turning that over to the legal authorities...

[–] Manalith@midwest.social 3 points 4 hours ago

Presumably because they're actively trying to murder the legal authorities
