A better article with more details:

G7 announces oil reserve release, as Trump hails Europe diesel deal

Macron says G7 will release 100 million barrels over four months; diesel release to be ‘frontloaded’

In 2025, distillate (or diesel) fuel consumption (excluding biodiesel and renewable diesel) by the U.S. transportation sector was about 2.94 million barrels per day.

The U.S. alone uses 3 million barrels per day, 100 million barrels would last about a month. These barrels are not being released to the U.S. directly. It's going to help a little, but not much, and not for long.

My understanding is no country stocks significant reserves compared to what is used each day, because oil sitting in storage costs money instead of making profits. Instead, we produce what is used and can be sold as soon as possible. Essentially, Just In Time for the energy sector, like every other manufacturer. So, this isn't a real solution, it's just Trump trying to earn brownie points before the election.

Yeah, this isn't going to help for long, and once reserves run dry in a few months, the US will cut off exports leaving Europe out to dry.

He is hoping for a boost before the midterms, he doesn't care after that. This is about saving his own skin not reducing cost.

Trump will threaten to. And European leaders will cave to demands of the Trump admin again and again. Whether it's something that benefits one of his businesses or investments. Or all the way up to joining the Iran War.

At some point. We're going to run out of "this temporary measure will bring oil futures down". And, at that point, Europe will be forced into, at first, symbolic support of the Iran war, material support of the Iran War, and finally stuck in the same unwinnable War the US is.

The reality of the situation is that there's just not enough energy to go around. So, it's a different situation from the US doing mere economic bullying of Europe. This time there's not enough pie to go around, and Europe will be left to starve.

100 million barrels would last about a month.

long enough to mitigate the worse of the damage to republican's midterm election chances in the united states -- europe literally threw its own people under the bus to help save the republicans.

china has a fair bit though it's also a huge consumer, but it's also using less all the time as it continues its electrification process. Most other counties are kicking that electrification can down the road.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Strategic_petroleum_reserve_%28China%29?wprov=sfla1

China does not officially report its volume, but as of 2026, China is estimated to hold the largest emergency reserves in the world, totalling 1.3 billion barrels.

Australia is the largest per capita user of diesel because we've ignored the issue for decades and gone all in on oil (diesel, gasoline, avgas etc) and have a 2 week strategic reserve, stored in the USA We're fools electing idiots down under.

It will help for a month and the US will be deeper in debt for it thanks to pedo presidents illegal war

[–] eldavi@lemmy.ml 7 points 4 days ago (1 children)

the main concern for them rn seems to be the midterm elections and this seems to be engineered to cushion the fallout.

[–] mrmisses@lemmy.world 1 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Yes then they can go back to fucking us all even harder if they win

[–] eldavi@lemmy.ml 5 points 3 days ago (1 children)

they won't win, but this coupled with the supreme court giving them permission to rig all their elections will guarantee that they won't completely lose either.

instead it'll be the democrats who will be fucking us harder.

instead it'll be the democrats who will be fucking us harder.

I don't believe that is possible unless every dem in office is a Fetterman waiting to turn

[–] eldavi@lemmy.ml 8 points 3 days ago (1 children)

all democrats are fettermans to one degree or another and the difference between republican and democrat has zero bearing on the world

you can't tell americans anything -- they're either too conditioned to focus on the red vs blue team culture wars to notice much of anything else that matters in the grand scheme of things or so desperate that they can't afford to consider anything more than making next month's rent on time.

[–] gary_host_laptop@lemmy.ml 6 points 3 days ago

because of zio mamdani? btw they said the world, not a city in white supremacist country. the world doesn't care, maybe newyorkers care. the majority of the world doesnt.
