I remember a couple years ago there was that rumor that skittles all tasted the same. I immediately called bullshit, because of course they fucking taste different, and went digging for the source, only to find it was a claim made in a scientific paper showing how the internet is quick to latch on to and spread false information. Somehow this made me even more upset.

[–] dogdeanafternoon@lemmy.ca 50 points 2 weeks ago (4 children)

That’s actually the origin of the “average person eats 8 spiders per year” myth. Started for the reason of showing how fast false info spreads.

[–] SkaveRat@discuss.tchncs.de 18 points 2 weeks ago (2 children)

Fun fact. It kind of was, and it kind of wasn't. At least not in the sense that most people think.

The base claim is "people eat 8 spiders in their sleep"

Which was debunked by snopes in 2001, citing someone who make up that claim as an example, which then spread as misinformation

But that's not the end of the story

spoiler

Snopes themselves fabricated that citation, making this whole story very meta

[–] adarza@lemmy.ca 5 points 2 weeks ago

the real spoiler...it's actually more than just 8 spiders

[–] Venator@lemmy.nz 3 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Well great, now I need to go get that book and check they weren't lying about making up the citation...

[–] SkaveRat@discuss.tchncs.de 3 points 2 weeks ago

Lemmino did a video about it, before snopes admitted the trolling

Although, you never know if he lied as well

[–] edgemaster72@lemmy.world 6 points 2 weeks ago

Let Spiders Georg eat his spiders in peace

For real. Rookie numbers.

[–] DrCake@lemmy.world 63 points 2 weeks ago (2 children)

This is ancient, basically pre-history

[–] harrys_balzac@lemmy.dbzer0.com 27 points 2 weeks ago (2 children)

I was there...eight years ago.

[–] glimse@lemmy.world 5 points 2 weeks ago (2 children)

Twitter was the best social media site on the Internet pretty until they changed the character limit.

It stayed pretty good until MAGA and MAGA bots flooded it, then it was shit if you didn't have a tight list of follows.

It did not recover when they fled to Truth Social and was effectively unusable by the time of the takeover...which crushed any shred of hope of recovery.

[–] harrys_balzac@lemmy.dbzer0.com 4 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

I fled Twatter once it looked like Muskrat was going to have to buy it.

The bots were already way out of control then.

At this point, there's nothing that would get back on that platform.

[–] glimse@lemmy.world 4 points 2 weeks ago

Same, I had been using it a lot less and less anyway but that was what made me click delete

[–] bugbear@lemmy.sdf.org 3 points 2 weeks ago

Eh, it was always crap. The same way all social media are crap, that is.

[–] adarza@lemmy.ca 3 points 2 weeks ago

froot loops all being the same was spread around the old fashioned way long before cell phones even existed.

[–] Z745812939054@lemmy.zip -2 points 2 weeks ago

[–] pelespirit@sh.itjust.works 25 points 2 weeks ago

Color does amazing things with our brain.

[–] ExLisper@lemmy.curiana.net 22 points 2 weeks ago (2 children)

He's lucky they didn't simply drone him.

[–] Track_Shovel@slrpnk.net 12 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

That has a distinctly battletech feel to it. Pissed off the phone company? behold, four King Crab mechs at your door!

[–] GoodStuffEh@lemmy.ca 2 points 2 weeks ago

Give 'em the peeench

I don't think they would so that. Kelog has calmed down a lot over the last few years.

[–] stoly@lemmy.world 18 points 2 weeks ago (2 children)

If real, the number was spoofed.

[–] billwashere@lemmy.world 4 points 2 weeks ago

And brilliant.

[–] Krudler@lemmy.world 2 points 2 weeks ago
[–] Master@sh.itjust.works 16 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Each of the different color dyes have a subtle but distinct flavor. Only true fruit loop enjoyers would notice!

[–] nailingjello@piefed.zip 8 points 2 weeks ago

That may be true for fruit loops, but the post is referencing froot loops. Totally different products

[–] AuroraZzz@lemmy.world 9 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Why does the guy have an 800 number? I'm going to take a guess here and say that the middle picture is fake

[–] Tarquinn2049@lemmy.world 20 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago)

By "the guy", do you mean Kellogg's? We don't know cletus's number, but it must have been listed on either his twitter, or something he linked to from his twitter. While I don't know if this is real, it is fully possible. And usually simple.

[–] Eternal192@anarchist.nexus 5 points 2 weeks ago

That fucker is alive!! i blew his head off at Fort Hagen! Oh... nevermind... wrong Kellogg, you should still shoot him just to be safe.

[–] seantpayne@lemmy.world 4 points 2 weeks ago

Tastes like purple.

[–] Treczoks@lemmy.world 2 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Its just different harmful colorings.

[–] Chezus9247@lemmy.world 2 points 2 weeks ago

Harmful?! Seems like I have to buy something from Kelloggs.
