The better version of this joke

[–] AppleMango@lemmy.world 29 points 2 days ago

I feel like the post is better, seems like a matter of opinion

[–] Wildmimic@anarchist.nexus 48 points 3 days ago (4 children)

I disagree hard. The shape of soup is temperature based.

[–] yakko@feddit.uk 2 points 1 day ago

I love how true this is. I made stock and froze it in a Ziploc bag using my bread tins as a brick form. Works perfectly

[–] CombatWombat@feddit.online 11 points 2 days ago

I am upset by how entirely correct you are about this.

[–] SavarosaCraft@lemmy.world 3 points 2 days ago

I call them SoopCube.
Tho right now I am storing fruits for smoothies in it... Still, SoopCube.

[–] myyass@lemmy.world 2 points 2 days ago

This is that one trick you don't want people to know.

[–] nandeEbisu@lemmy.world 4 points 1 day ago

Nah, its because you need to scrape down the sides to get all the soup at the end and if its a square container you can't do that in the corners. Round containers are just easier to scrape down.

[–] stickly@lemmy.world 55 points 3 days ago (3 children)

Or perhaps because it's easier to scrape down the sides of a rounded container with a spoon?...

[–] Track_Shovel@slrpnk.net 35 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Get out of here with your logic; this is a shitpost

[–] nandeEbisu@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago

A swirly circle shitpost or a straight log shitpost?

[–] Mouselemming@sh.itjust.works 14 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago) (2 children)

But it's soup, you can pour instead of scraping. In fact a corner is a better spout for pouring, if we're being purely practical.

But can you imagine if some fancy-shmancy restaurant served their extremely delicious soup in a square bowl? Teasing you with the impossibility of getting the last drop? I'd tip it out the corner but I'm crass.

If they did so, it would be to mess with your mind and subvert your expectations.

Because soup is round.

[–] stickly@lemmy.world 7 points 3 days ago (2 children)

If you don't need to scrape anything out of the bowl on your last couple bites then you're eating broth, not soup (consommé is a broth, fight me)

[–] ByteJunk@lemmy.world 5 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (1 children)

Anyone that thinks that a soup is something you can eat in "bites" is either a lard abuser or lives in some -40°C frozen wasteland

Fight on.

[–] FooBarrington@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago

You're acting like you've never accidentally reduced a soup far enough that you almost burned it.

There are dozens of cases, every year!

That only applies if you're transfering the soup out of the container to eat. If you plan on eating straight from the tupperware, round is better for soup

[–] Mouselemming@sh.itjust.works 2 points 2 days ago

Unless you pour it in your mouth...

[–] Vreyan31@reddthat.com 2 points 2 days ago

And to use a ladle

[–] leftzero@lemmy.dbzer0.com 14 points 2 days ago

Assuming no gravity, soup is a sphere.

This year’s award winning film: The Shape of Soup.

Spoiler: it's fish soup

[–] CuddlyCassowary@lemmy.world 4 points 3 days ago

I would absolutely watch this.

Soup cans > soup cubes

I was wondering why they make them in cans rather than cubes since it’s space lost and found this:

The cylindrical shapes of cans are a major benefit when manufacturing products. The cylindrical shape is the perfect cross-section of using the least amount of material but being able to fit the most product into shipment boxes and on store shelves. A spherical shape is inefficient for packaging, and a cubical shape is inefficient in terms of material use. The cylindrical shape is just right by using a rounded top (like a sphere) and elongated sides (like a cube). This cylindrical shape is also critical for withstanding pressure. This shape can withstand up to 90 lbs of pressure, making them a durable product for day-to-day life.

[–] Zarobi@aussie.zone 1 points 2 days ago

At this point I'm surprised they haven't switched to square cans so you pay more but get less soup

[–] Tacky4092@feddit.org 4 points 2 days ago

Because of bowls, I get it

[–] Devial@lemmy.world 11 points 2 days ago

It's very hard to get all of the soup out of a square container, because a spoon won't reach into the edges properly

[–] gegil@sopuli.xyz 16 points 3 days ago (1 children)
[–] mavu@discuss.tchncs.de 5 points 2 days ago

yeah, ok. tend to agree. although i will allow a Squircle

[–] minorkeys@sh.itjust.works 6 points 2 days ago

Because you can't explain. Because your brain is in a round container and it has personal biases in shape preferences.

Too dumb to meme

[–] 4grams@awful.systems 8 points 2 days ago

I completely understand, I see nothing wrong with this statement.

[–] AlecSadler@lemmy.dbzer0.com 7 points 2 days ago (1 children)

I wish bouillon cubes were spheres

[–] DangerNooble@lemmy.world 7 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

Bouillon balls

[–] Sunflier@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (2 children)

For those that need an explanation: round containers don't have corners, but square ones do. Soup is a liquid, which means it will occupy the corner. The corners are very difficult to get liquid out of; be it with a spoon or otherwise for eating, cleaning, serving, etc.. Putting soup in round containers keeps that problem from occurring.

And very difficult to scrub the grease off of

[–] Buddahriffic@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago

Counter argument: corners make it easier to pour accurately. If it's a thick soup, you're going to get strips of soup stuck to the container between the spoon strokes either way and a corner can act as a soup staging area that makes it easier to get the soup out instead of just pushing it around. And a spatula would make quick work out of either shape.

Though note that I'm picturing a rectangular container with rounded edges.

[–] SystemDisc@feddit.org 1 points 1 day ago

In zero G it is indeed a sphere

[–] expatriado@lemmy.world 10 points 3 days ago

well rounded logic

[–] Eh_I@lemmy.world 7 points 3 days ago

Campbell's BuzzBallz

[–] dontbelievethis@sh.itjust.works 6 points 3 days ago (1 children)

I agree. A liquid should have the freedom to expand in all directions equally.

Everything else is just needless abusive or cruel behavior towards soup.

I prefer square because it's easier to fold the soup.

"How to fold soup" Steve Martin, Cruel Shoes.

[–] OpenStars@discuss.online 5 points 3 days ago

Of course not - no explanation is necessary!!

[–] UnfortunateShort@lemmy.world 2 points 2 days ago

I don't even possess a round container. They're strictly less practical than rectangular ones

[–] Nindelofocho@lemmy.world 2 points 2 days ago

Never trust soup from a tetrapack

[–] abbiistabbii@piefed.blahaj.zone 3 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Here some soups are sold in Tertrapak cartons which I suspect would break the average American.
