Why doesn’t he just admit that he wants us to live (?) as miserable indentured serfs?

[–] marcos@lemmy.world 47 points 5 days ago (2 children)

He never said it out loud? I would expect him to.

All this talk about technofeudalism and permanent underclass was never repeated by him?

[–] Rat_in_a_hat@lemmy.ca 35 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago) (2 children)

Nah, that's Peter Thiel who said it out loud.

Thiel. its no wonder OPENAI, flock, vance is used to achieve thiels dream of the PALANTIR, and its using his palantir AI system. Israel uses it to bomb specific targets.

[–] Tollana1234567@lemmy.today 7 points 4 days ago

thiel the ventriloquists of sam altman, flock ceo, and JD VANCE. also obsessed with the anti-christs, so these 3 are his apostates.

Why would he waste energy communicating with people he has no interest in?

Sam Altmann doesn't ask for consent, his very own sister says so.

[–] myyass@lemmy.world 2 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago) (1 children)

damn that was not exactly a read I wanted to read.

[–] FoxAlive@lemmy.zip 2 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago)

My bad, my ass

[–] mr_account@lemmy.world 88 points 4 days ago (3 children)

Can we start calling him Sham Altman?

Isn't there someone you forgot to ask?

Yea, me. But I approved it.

[–] HeyThisIsntTheYMCA@lemmy.world 13 points 4 days ago

Guys! If we donate all our RAM then Sam will be able to build the AI that will destroy our civilization even sooner.

[–] Rcklsabndn@sh.itjust.works 21 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago) (3 children)

I'm thankful I rebuilt my rig during the incredibly brief period during COVID where RAM was cheap as chips and mid tier GPUs were under $500.

Outside of Fallout and KCD2, I don't play anything graphically intensive, so hopefully I'm good for another 5-10 years.

Wishful thinking, I know. But I've had periods where I simply didn't have a gaming box that could run new hotness so I ignored the industry.

Got a lot of reading done. Maybe this is for the best.

[–] justme@lemmy.dbzer0.com 5 points 4 days ago

i also bought two gaming rigs and a small home server in the time between crypto and ai, so i think it was a good time. unfortunately i had a huge storage fallout this year in the server. no data is lost due to redundancy, but i can't rebuild it because the seller returned me the original price as warranty...

[–] morbidcactus@lemmy.ca 5 points 4 days ago

I did mine end of 2021/beginning of 2022, these days I actually use my LCD steam deck for most everything and even then I'll often stream from my desktop. Right now I'm on a morrowind kick so playing a nearly 25 year old game, deck handles openmw and mods amazing.

I have a huge backlog already so don't feel compelled to buy a lot of new stuff and I'm just not keeping up with what's hot anymore. I have other hobbies than gaming as well, other reason I've really liked having the steam deck is it's easy to pause and come back later if you want.

[–] FrostyTheDoo@lemmy.world 4 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago)

I sold an arm and a leg to do a build this year, accepting the cost because it's probably the last one I'll ever be able to do and if I didn't strike I now it wouldn't be an option at all soon

'Siri, read this article about AI for me. Medium speed, South England accent.'

[–] Rcklsabndn@sh.itjust.works 6 points 4 days ago

Slightly unrelated, but the most disturbing part of 1984 for me was that the protagonist had to buy a blank notebook as contraband and use a blind spot in his apartment to write in it.

I'm glad I have a good gaming PC, because they'll never be affordable again.

Recommended reading: Empire of AI by Karen Hao. It rather effectively shines the light on the mindset of AI bros.

[–] Gomiboy@lemmy.world 9 points 4 days ago

We have allowed these tech-bro fascist retards to control every aspect of our digital lives, plunging us toward an anti consumer subscription model for every digital commodity, stripping us of autonomy and agency as a consumer.

You can tell because he has too many teeth in his mouth.

[–] orca@orcas.enjoying.yachts 4 points 4 days ago

Yeah we should do something about that… 👊

[–] joyjoy@piefed.social 8 points 4 days ago

Sam Altman objects to the amount of RAM you're using.

[–] LittleBorat3@lemmy.world 4 points 4 days ago (4 children)

Why can there be no peer to peer sharing of hardware on which people run AI? Decentralize it, no tech CEO clowns needed.

[–] Theoriginalthon@lemmy.world 4 points 3 days ago

There is, is called a home server

[–] Epp@lemmus.org 3 points 3 days ago (1 children)
[–] REDACTED@infosec.pub 1 points 3 days ago

That is for generating images. Pretty useless. Was thinking along the lines of science, research and medicine.

Early 90s hackers got that idea. We should have gone that direction.

[–] phx@lemmy.world 3 points 3 days ago

Because typically the resources for a particular AI job need to be centralized in order to obtain usable speeds. Even a machine with a decent 16GB GPU is going to lose speed swapping in and out of system RAM - though it does allow for larger models - so machines in a LAN can't currently split the workloads without significant efficiency losses. It's also why AI boards are typically using soldered LPDDR rather than swappable DIMM's (can't get an AI CPU with a non-soldered board).

Peers over the Internet would be abysmally slow or untenable for many workloads, at least with the way a lot of stuff is built currently.

HOWEVER, that's assuming monolithic non-specialized/optimized models. In the future as we see models built and trained for more specific jobs, it should be possible to have individual students run more as specialists and swap data. There are models that are specialized currently but not really an ecosystem for them:

  • General LLM/Chat or
  • Image recognition
  • Image generation
  • 3D Spatial navigation/manipulation
  • Code generation/processing
  • Network analysis
  • Audio processing/generation
  • Etc

If we think of something like creating an MMO (and assuming we didn't include the moral issues of AI generation), then a pipeline could have different assets building a soundtrack, 3d models, scenes/animation per a script, character voicing, various dialog, 3d world space mechanics, etc all running from different clustered machines

Just wait till he finds out about server memory.

[–] WhyIHateTheInternet@lemmy.world 9 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Wait till he finds out nobody wants any of this shit
