Actually, the oxygen that Sam Altman consumes is wasteful.

[–] justsomeguy@lemmy.world 9 points 1 hour ago (2 children)

He's right about this being inefficient but the reason we can't have nice things here is that he is the most condensed essence of shit and we can't trust him or any of his billionaire shitcock friends.

[–] Jiral@lemmy.world 1 points 45 minutes ago

Not just that, channel stuffing RAM into warehouses is actually less efficient than playing Rollercoaster Tycoon on 64 GB RAM.

[–] biggerbogboy@sh.itjust.works 1 points 58 minutes ago

billionaire shitcock friends

This is amazing, imma use this

[–] Axolotl_cpp@lemmy.dbzer0.com 7 points 1 hour ago

Most of the money he has aren't used so it would be better if he give his money to the collective

[–] t_berium@lemmy.world 5 points 1 hour ago (1 children)

That begs the question: what tool did dear Sam use to acquire his skills in the first place? Since at least one of his own computers certainly played a role in his career (and he couldn’t possibly have used it to its full capacity for decades) this attitude speaks volumes. Even though his own personal computing power helped him get to where he is now, he denies that same opportunity to everyone else. Fuck you, Sam.

Sam's primary skill is grifting, you don't need a PC to develop that skill.

According to rumours he barely knows how to code and he is said to misunderstand basic machine learning concepts. It is however true that he might have needed a PC at some point in his 2 years of studying computer science before dropping out. Even though I remember that at my local university people weren't even touching a PC in the first year and were being tortured by theory and math by hand instead, to understand the foundation before going anywhere fancy. Maybe that has changed in the meanwhile.

"Oh yeah, nice to have all usercontent in our cloud and above the money the user paid to us for it. Now we also can turn the user PC in a paperweight if he don't pay us the monthly fe."

This asshole even abused sexualy his own sister since she was 3 years old and he 12.

There is this strange correlation of billionares with being pedos or rapists

However, in a joint statement released by Sam Altman along with his mother and two brothers at the time, the family said they were concerned for Ann Altman's wellbeing and have spent years trying to support her financially and to look after her wellbeing.

The family said she receives monthly financial support, and her bills and rent were also covered, while also trying to assist with medical help

Weird, how this is supposed to prove that she's lying? They already support her financially but she lying for what, financial support?

[–] SethTaylor@lemmy.world 4 points 1 hour ago

If anything it proves that she was abused and is now incapable of living a normal life and therefore needs financial support

[–] ZombieCyborgFromOuterSpace@piefed.ca 29 points 3 hours ago (1 children)

These assholes deserve to die. They're a waste of oxygen.

[–] CapuccinoCoretto@lemmy.world 12 points 2 hours ago* (last edited 2 hours ago)

I wonnder if he will make the same argument about private wealth?

[–] hansolo@lemmy.today 13 points 3 hours ago

Is this finally the manifestation of "you'll own nothing and love it" or whatever it was?

Someone did the same math as SETI in 1999, when they asked people to take idle compute to grind data. At what point does the free tier of ChatGPT grind data on your machine like some sort of bitcoin mining malware?

Let's extrapolate: Humans are 70% water - Buddy, at what point do to you start trying to dehydrate orphans to cool all the ram you want to harvest from average people?

[–] altkey@lemmy.dbzer0.com 16 points 3 hours ago (1 children)

Counterpoint: Amazon is buying billions in Nvidia AI systems it can't yet turn on

https://www.businessinsider.com/amazon-nvidia-ai-gpu-data-centers-power-shortages-2026-10?op=1

Before turning to slower RAM, they collectively made VRAM&GPU a luxury by intentionally exhausting supply to everyone else, and leftover components they can't (or haven't even planned) to power on collects dust.

There are like tens of ways to ridicule his argument, but I find this one more direct.

[–] minorkeys@sh.itjust.works 5 points 2 hours ago

Can't let competition have it. That's us, we're the competition.

[–] sammyb@lemmy.ca 68 points 4 hours ago (3 children)

I get his argument logically, but I wonder how many vacant bedrooms he owns. He should give them to my housing collective so they aren't sitting idle all the time.

[–] StabbingSky@lemmy.zip 41 points 4 hours ago (1 children)

It's a good argument if it was made in good faith.

But he's evil, so it's not in good faith

[–] Rothe@piefed.social 9 points 1 hour ago (1 children)

It is a stupid argument even if made in good faith.

[–] Naich@piefed.world 10 points 1 hour ago (1 children)

It's sound reasoning up to a point. It would be far more efficient if everyone gave their RAM to a central collective and used it online. That way the RAM would be in use even when you aren't using it personally. Everyone would have an effectively infinite amount and it would be cheaper because you only pay for the time that you are using it.

I'm reality, of course, Sam would be in charge of all the RAM and would keep screwing us harder and harder until we started squeaking like a rat in an undersized corset. That's what separates the theory from reality.

[–] HetareKing@piefed.social 2 points 8 minutes ago

I think it might not be. Of course, what Sam means is "let us have all the RAM so you can run a ChatGPT client on your Commodore 64", and if that were the only thing RAM was used for, that would be more efficient. But it's not and it would be undesirable for things to become like that.

So let's imagine a general purpose RAM collective. I think for that to be workable at all, it would require a major upgrade to internet infrastructure to make it sufficiently high-throughput and low-latency, which would be very costly and also require a lot of RAM. The cost of all that would probably dwarf the inefficiencies of individually owned RAM not being used maximally.

Additionally, to get the latency low enough, the data centers would have to be pretty physically close to the people using them. But people who live near each other also tend to sleep, work and play at similar times, so the gained efficiency wouldn't be nearly as high as it could be. And on top of all that, even the lowest achievable latency would still be very slow by RAM standards, so at that point you might as well be using a hard drive as working memory.

Exactly. He could make similar arguments regarding kitchens or food.

“People shouldn’t own food. It’s wasteful. It’s much better utilized in OpenKitchens.”

[–] FreddiesLantern@leminal.space 9 points 3 hours ago

I mean he IS an expert in waste isn't he?

Wasting everyone's time and money, the planet, our patience,...

[–] ImgurRefugee114@reddthat.com 25 points 4 hours ago* (last edited 4 hours ago) (2 children)

If he wants my graphics card so bad, I'd be more than happy to give my 7900xtx to him via the rectal route, unlubed. I'd hate to give it up but I understand it's for a good cause. He can have the motherboard too, same way.

[–] toebert@piefed.social 1 points 8 minutes ago

Just remember the pcie port is on the side, it has to go in port first.

[–] tangeli@piefed.social 2 points 1 hour ago

He will use any means to eliminate competition, with the ultimate goal of abusing a monopoly.

  • do we need to be running every last scrap of computer, full tilt and always? Doesn’t that make Jesus and Climate Jesus weep?
  • my computer is doing Soulseek stuff, and someone is currently downloading season one of Severance from it and I hope they enjoy it, it will bring them more pleasure than even kicking Sam Altman in the balls.
  • why should I have to surrender my computer to this sad little man who is older than me by only three months? It’s my computer, I bought it, fuck him.
  • my computer is full of turtle stickers, fucker isn’t getting my computer
  • >:(

[–] SaharaMaleikuhm@feddit.org 7 points 3 hours ago (1 children)

And I want him 6 feet under so I can piss on his grave. We can't always get what we want.

[–] Tartufo@lemmy.world 1 points 2 hours ago

I'd like to argue that there's more people wanting to piss on his grave than Scam Oldmans who want our RAM.

[–] Zeppo@sh.itjust.works 49 points 5 hours ago* (last edited 1 hour ago) (1 children)

I can think of something that’s an absolute waste of computing resources: AI bullshit. Nobody really needs to expend computing resources, electricity, and water to have ChatGPT tell them that they asked the best question ever because they’re so insightful.

[–] digdig@piefed.social 16 points 4 hours ago

He's promoting his own business by ruining others.

The man is a shill of the highest order.

When the music stops, the bubble will burst.

He just wants to be the last one on the dance floor.

It's Rhetoric of the highest order.

[–] SarahValentine@pawb.social 12 points 4 hours ago

His brain is idle most of the time. Can we have it?

[–] hperrin@lemmy.ca 20 points 5 hours ago

I think him having oxygen is wasteful.

[–] discocactus@lemmy.world 22 points 5 hours ago (1 children)

Saltman can rent a bag of dicks.

[–] loaf@sh.itjust.works 14 points 5 hours ago

AI is wasteful. Hell, he’s using up good oxygen, so he’s just as wasteful as his “product.”

[–] aport@programming.dev 18 points 5 hours ago

Eat my ass Sam

We could say this about all kinds of property. What is he, socialist? ... What a pointless non-story.
