Call it “TrumpCare” and he’ll sign it with glee. Get this shit done, let us join the developed world!

Yes, it fucking ridiculous. CEO's getting shot, people dying for stupid reasons....this would solve it, except the A-hole CEO's.

[–] MrVilliam@sh.itjust.works 3 points 1 hour ago

If somebody donned a green hat each week until this passed, CEOs would move into a compound by week 3, and this would still not pass. I think it will take something much more extreme. There's way too much for the owners to lose by letting health insurance slip through their fingers. It's not just money, but control to keep the laborers obedient and loyal. We NEED health insurance, so we stay with our abusers. I don't know what action it would actually take to get M4A, but I'm pretty sure that saying it would get me banned from a lot of internet platforms and maybe get feds knocking on my door to ask a few questions. It would take good trouble, to say the least.

Please, please, medical debt is out of control in this country.

[–] Fredselfish@lemmy.world 11 points 1 hour ago (1 children)

The presumed leader of the house says he doesn't support medicare for all. So we need new leadership if we are to get anything done at all.

[–] BuckFutter@timeyak.com 8 points 1 hour ago (2 children)

Yah Jefferries, needs to go…i signed the petition to have him removed for consideration, but what else is there to do? Im in a deep red bootlicking district so calling my senator/congress critter asking for change is akin to pissing in the wind hoping to taste the finest of champagnes.

[–] Fredselfish@lemmy.world 5 points 1 hour ago (1 children)

Same stuck in Oklahoma. These morons still going all Republican here. Guess time to move back to Texas.

[–] BuckFutter@timeyak.com 4 points 1 hour ago

Ooofff I hear yah, I'm in the southeast and we just doubled down on stupid. Its baffling.

[–] MrVilliam@sh.itjust.works 3 points 1 hour ago (1 children)

This is where I'm at too. I was hoping for the blue wave to reach my red shore, but at least almost the entire rest of my state isn't majority stupid redneck assholes.

Obviously power corrupts and it would be a bad idea in actuality, but I sometimes wonder what the country would look like after just 8 years of total progressive control in all branches, and no garbage right wing propaganda to issue marching orders to the dumbasses who rely on fox news to tell them what to think. Benevolent dictatorship for the working class, providing healthcare and education and food and shelter, and then see what's popular when the choice is given back to the people. Want this to continue, or go back to indentured servitude to keep health insurance, and have your tax dollars go back to buying tanks we don't need for wars we don't want instead of buying food for your family.

It's wild that I really don't know whether forcing these chuds to experience utopia would even be enough to convince them to want it.

[–] BuckFutter@timeyak.com 2 points 1 hour ago (1 children)

Ohh the brainwashing is so true…just need to look at your local Facebook threads and just see the parroting of bullshit, absent any real facts. I really think it comes down to nobody wants to read anymore and some people, maybe its a majority, get their news from short 30 second video clips and thats it…so easy to be misinformed without doing any real research or effort. Oh well.

It’s wild that I really don’t know whether forcing these chuds to experience utopia would even be enough to convince them to want it.

Ohh they would likely secretly love it and then publicly bash it depending on what their local news tells them to think about it. Shit we just passed a major cut to property taxes and now they are talking about shutting down parks, libraries and other social outlets to offset the local budget cuts. The amount of people cheering it on is just ridiculous.

[–] MrVilliam@sh.itjust.works 3 points 45 minutes ago (1 children)

Yeah, that's why I included getting rid of the propaganda during that thought experiment.

Ignorant people don't read, and therefore don't understand why they should have to pay for libraries. I'm aware that libraries do more than loan out books, but they don't know that. Because they're ignorant. These are the same kinds of people who think they shouldn't have to pay for public schools unless they or their kids are using them, and then they wonder why their property value is in the toilet when the schools fall apart. These fucking imbeciles truly cannot think more than one step ahead, to the point that the average 8 year old could probably beat a lot of them in connect four.

[–] BuckFutter@timeyak.com 1 points 21 minutes ago

Ohh yah you made some great points.

Ignorant people don’t read

Yep and they still vote. But that is it right there as you stated…the question is how do you fix that? I certainly don’t have an answer for it, and now things are being jumped ahead to asking an AI chat bot on how to think or vote…so now is up to who controls the AI/LLM that determines what information people get back. Maybe we should give everyone in the country a subscription to a foreign newspaper like the guardian lol…yah that sounds like a horrible idea after reading that aloud lol.

[–] Prove_your_argument@piefed.social 13 points 2 hours ago (1 children)

Yep, get rid of health insurance companies aside from as upgraded coverage. Works great in France and so many other places with superior health outcomes than the US.

[–] inclementimmigrant@lemmy.world 4 points 2 hours ago

Hell I'd even be fine following the German SHI system. Just something that would actually provide actual universal coverage and regulate the out of control insurance companies.

[–] Dispassionate@quokk.au 22 points 2 hours ago (1 children)

I mean, do it fucking now. (By now I mean early next year and not never, which is historically the timeline democrats work on)

[–] lennybird@lemmy.world 10 points 2 hours ago* (last edited 1 hour ago)

The best Democrats can do is put it to a vote that will inevitably be shot down by a silent / lazy / cloture filibuster, and if not that, a veto by Trump. Still, they might as well do it and then point loudly to Republicans blocking the way of progress and campaign on this into 2028.

What Democrats won this cycle was a lifeline for the party, and hopefully a shift in their direction that distinguishes themselves from Republicans in an authentic way -- not just "Republican-lite." Especially if they pick these two seats up in Alaska and Mississippi then Congress looks very favorable to them in 2028 for whoever the Democratic President will be then. Second to that, what this did was enable Democrats to apply some brakes on Trump's active smash and grab.

What Dems can do now:

  • They CAN skirt the silent filibuster with a procedures vote that only takes a simple majority ("nuclear option"). It's not quite as comprehensive as truly removing it, but it would suffice (this is when Traitor Sinema curtsied and blocked its removal last time).

  • They CAN effectively abolish the Electoral College and push first at state-level and then in Congress (probably via omnibus bill) the The National Popular Vote Interstate Compact. Dems won enough state legislatures and Congress to do this! Put another way: If this was in place for 2016, Trump would've lost and would likely have been relegated to history thereafter.

  • They must start Congressional investigations, hearings, and issue subpoenas. Start holding accountable this regime and instilling fear. Already at least one Trump lawyer has resigned.

These things alone (along with the principled legislation of M4A noted above) would set Democrats up massively for 2028.

Recognize that corporations, and unions, want control of your health care to use as bargaining chips. That's why it's hard to get either side to let it out of corporate control.

[–] rockSlayer@lemmy.blahaj.zone 4 points 1 hour ago (1 children)

I've been organizing unions for years. I've never once met a union staffer that wanted private healthcare over public healthcare to maintain bargaining power. Unions bargain healthcare because we have to, not because it's a bargaining chip. If private healthcare dies, that creates substantially more bargaining power for workers.

[–] Manjushri@piefed.social 4 points 47 minutes ago

Yep. If employees (union or otherwise) aren't beholden to their employer for health care then those employers have to offer better pay and benefits to get and keep good employees.

[–] superglue@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 points 53 minutes ago* (last edited 53 minutes ago)

Yep. They use it to keep you working. Do the math to see how far away you are from retirement if you weren't saddled with healthcare premiums. It is bonkers that every single citizen is not in favor of it.

[–] Grimy@lemmy.world 5 points 1 hour ago* (last edited 1 hour ago)

Start organizing protests. They won't give it if everyone is only calling for it.

[–] inclementimmigrant@lemmy.world 13 points 3 hours ago* (last edited 3 hours ago)

Yup. You want to only focus on economic relief because it's too hard for your little leadership brain and body to do more than one thing, then do something bold to actually address economic relief and fix Romneycare the right way.
