A few months later, Trump’s Treasury Department announced that it was destroying all of the filings the registry had compiled thus far, torching the database entirely.
This sounds like a cover-up to me.
Some things that would help:
- A wealth tax. Their wealth will continue to grow exponentially, but at least a portion of it could be harvested to reduce the deficit.
- Taxing capital gains the same as ordinary income. Making money from investments requires no effort, and it blows my mind that wage income is taxed more heavily.

This will not increase the housing supply. In fact, it should theoretically decrease construction of housing, by reducing the demand for it. But it would be much harder for Congress to address the root of the problem, and big companies make an effective scapegoat.
