sure they're leaving but...where? what's a viable alternative?

I mean if I had it my way everyone would just go back to IRC, I still use IRC. it's great, nothings changed, it's perfect. combine that with like mumble or teamspeak and you're good to go.

I checked out Stoat lastnight and it's very slow. took well over an hour to get a verification email (I assume because many others were signing up) and the current server offerings are minimal. Also a good majority of the themes listed simply don't work. it's growing and I'd say it's the best alternative right now but it's not there yet and I worry it or the various instances of it could hold up if there was a massive Discord exodus.

Matrix is a no and xmpp ain't much better.

potentially. it's going to become more of the norm as more nations enforce stuff like this to "protect the kids" coughget your id and know what you're doing onlinecough

Also keep in mind Discord is just about to launch their IPO in March so the timing lines up.

In Canada the government was providing something like close to $3000 per person during the pandemic if they had lost their job or were unable to work due to covid on the condition you pay it back. many people ripped off the program, many people didn't pay it back, government has kinda been mute on the whole thing since then. Guy I knew got it twice and could argue he didn't need it (he was a POS). never paid it back, didn't hear a peep from the government and still hasn't. continues to pay his taxes annnnnnd nothing, no one has ever come calling to collect.

Another thing is during the pandemic we were putting homeless individuals in hotel rooms for months on end. we paid for it. we "suddenly" were able to find them housing. People were working from home remember that? nothing collapsed, companies continued doing well. Then suddenly the pandemic ends and now for whatever reason we no longer have housing for the homeless, we can no longer put them in those hotel rooms, and we're forcing people to return to work. We no longer have money for anything?

it's not that we didn't learn anything, the people sure as fuck did learn something, It's just that there's more money to be made by the powers that be going back to the "old ways".

It's not so much about being "smart" to figure it out, it's more like it needs to "click" with you. At first you'll think it's stupid, you'll think it's a tedious way to do things and configure your system. Then you'll do something and it'll suddenly be like "oooooh I get it now, oh man that's awesome!". That's NixOS.

It's not a distro I recommend to people, it's one you just have to play around with yourself to see if you like it or not. But I will say I've found that the majority of people who do switch to it, it's the last distro they use. Like I'll spend a week on something else every few months to try it but I always go back to NixOS now. I just can't use any other distro long term anymore.

nah I find it boring now and it turns into a mess very quickly. only reason I was on Arch is cause i needed a "vacation" from NixOS to get a project done. project is done so went back to NixOS.

I'd love to see them try. And I think many Canadians are also chomping at the bit to "see America try". Lets see how far they get up here.
