The reports detail how guards have increasingly used chemical agents and physical tactics on detainees, including groups demanding adequate water, food and medical care.

For context ICE has not paid for detainee medical care for the past seven months, which is why detainees are willing to risk a beating to try and get it

Americans can’t afford the higher health insurance premiums that resulted from Congress’s refusal to extend federal tax credits.

Somehow, there's always plenty of money for levying war, whether against Americans or others, as well as plenty of room to cut billionaires taxes. Just not enough for regular folks.

The Trump administration says the cities shouldn’t be penalized for unhealthy air because pollution can blow in from abroad. Some experts say that’s preposterous.

This is what happens when the EPA is run by the fossil fuels industry: they try to point fingers at somebody else, instead of cleaning up actual local problems.

Its a program for the Democrats to aspire to. What you're seeing here is people with voice shifting where the party stands. It will be meaningful when they hold power

Elections are run by the states, not the federal government. They are going to happen as usual.

They could try to ignore the results, but the elections are happening.

When somebody does the right thing for the wrong reasons, the impact is the same.

XR has US chapters. They've mostly done protests on the scale of dozens to hundreds of people.

The big question isn't whether they'll break the law: it's whether they've alienated the local police enough that they'll do something besides look the other way.

I dont like lumping all Democrats together on this. They passed national anti-gerrymandering legislation through the House when they controlled it, but it died in the Senate because 3 out of 50 Democrats there wouldn't break the filibuster to pass it.

No. I think that some of the sites that claim to rank outlet bias intentionally describe center-right content as "left" in order to skew how people view things

In much of the US, living together and presenting yourself as married over a period of years means you're actually married.

The big group this impacts is married women — in particular it has a name-matching requirement which will block a large fraction of married women from voting. They're doing this because women have consistently been more likely to vote for Democrats than men:

This makes it very much worthwhile for Americans to ask their Senators to block this legislation by any means necessary.

The goal here is to keep women from voting: the SAVE act very specifically requires that you

  • Prove citizenship
  • That you prove that the name on your citizenship document (eg: birth certificate) match your current name

Because women often change name when they get married, they'll have a mismatch, and need to spend time and money to be able to vote. If the legislation passes, it will block about 20 million Americans from voting. Because of gender disparities in voting, Republicans see this as to their advantage.

Give your Senators a call at 202-224-3121 and ask them to block this change.
