I'll note that this shift is not uniform across the midwest; large areas will instead get drier

The fundamental problem with ethanol for motor vehicle fuel is that it displaces food for people, resulting in added deforestation. Wind and solar produce far more mobility per acre than ethanol from corn can, while also allowing significant agriculture within their footprint.

In a world where fertilizer or groundwater constrains agriculture, we're far better off using renewables and human food than growing food for cars or airplanes.

Defending the convictions would likely have required administration officials to assert that far-right groups were acting on behalf of President Trump on Jan. 6, 2021.

Yeah, they're doing some serious sanewashing of today's speech — no mention of confusing Iceland for Greenland several times, and treating the speech as a promise to not invade Greenland

Congressmembers have managed to inspect some. They don't provide medical care:

“The most frequent feedback we got was the inadequacy of the medical care they are receiving,” said Schiff. He described meeting a diabetic detainee who he said has not received treatment for her condition in two months. “That’s frightening,” he said.

A fair number of people do seem to be deported to other countries rather than die in the camps.. Officially, the number who died in ICE custody is 32 during 2025, but it's entirely possible that this number is an undercount. I will also note that ICE tends to deport people who are experiencing medical emergencies so that they die outside the US

The people in detention don't get any choice when doctors who aren't getting paid stop working. They just go without care, with a whole lot presumably dieing of preventable causes. Like this

“The most frequent feedback we got was the inadequacy of the medical care they are receiving,” said Schiff. He described meeting a diabetic detainee who he said has not received treatment for her condition in two months. “That’s frightening,” he said.

A meaningful chunk is also from land use changes, where people decide to clear a forest, turning the trees into CO2. A decision to burn wood at scale like this has exactly that effect: you end up with a forest in various stages of regrowth, instead of a bunch of mature forest which is sequestering carbon.

Kind of; the decision to burn means that you end up with half a forest, instead of a whole forest, with the balance of the CO2 ending up in the atmosphere.

Yes, and ICE is required by law to let them visit with no advance notice. ICE has been refusing access when they show up without warning.

You're right. They were sent home by the courts, and had been limited to defense of federal buildings which as completely unnecessary.

There has not so far been a deployment of active-duty military against the American people. Courts sent the guard home when deployed by the President without permission of the state’s governor.

Edit: there was a deployment of Marines to Los Angeles, which was also ended by the courts

They joined ICE when it started using Nazi slogans as recruiting tools.

The not-nutty gun owners are showing up in public but staying back from the protests so that they can discourage ICE from massacres

What happened after it is that Schumer started sending out talking points which are entirely about affordability, with no mention of ICE. Formal standing is nil, but it seems to have gotten through somehow

Yes, most cops are cowards. They're very uninterested in taking risks for the community, and would rather posture instead.
